Provocative use tests in CAPB-allergic subjects with CAPB-containing product.

Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) has been identified as a cause of contact allergy in personal care products. Furthermore, it has been suggested that chemicals responsible are impurities, especially dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA). However, skin contact concentrations with these impurities, especially DMAPA, are very low. The aim of the study was to analyse whether subjects with previous positive patch tests to CAPB would react in provocative use tests of a product containing CAPB. 10 individuals with a clinical history of contact allergy to CAPB (by positive patch test and history) took part in

Crystal deodorant dermatitis: irritant dermatitis to alum-containing deodorant.

Two patients developed an irritant dermatitis of the axillae shortly after using an over-the-counter "natural deodorant crystal" product containing alum. We discuss this previously unreported, untoward reaction to alum, an ancient agent with newfound popularity as an alternative health product.

Cheilitis: analysis of 75 cases referred to a contact dermatitis clinic.

BACKGROUND: Cheilitis is a common problem, the cause of which is often obscure. OBJECTIVE: Data on 75 cases of recalcitrant cheilitis were analyzed. These had been referred to a tertiary care center. METHODS: Each of the 75 patients had undergone a detailed history, physical examination, and patch tests. RESULTS: Of the patients, 53 were female (67%), and the age range was 9 to 79 years. Of the cases, 36% included irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), 25% included allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), 19% were attributed to atopic eczema, and in 9% the dermatitis was of unknown cause. Nine percen

In vitro testing of tensides employing monolayer cultures: a comparison with results of patch tests on human volunteers.

Evaluation of the irritant potential of new products or ingredients prior to human testing is generally performed in vivo on animals. However, according to the 6th amendment and following updates of the European Community directive on cosmetic products (93/35/EEC), animal testing will be banned when suitable substitutes will be available. To know whether in vitro tests for assessment of skin irritancy provide results approaching human conditions, comparisons have to be made between data deriving from in vitro tests and skin response in humans. The aim of our study was to assess the validity of

Strontium is a potent and selective inhibitor of sensory irritation.

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis occurs following topical exposure to many chemicals found in cosmetics, personal care products, drugs, and during occupational exposure. Signs and symptoms may include sensory irritation (sting, burn, and/or itch), erythema, edema, and vesiculation. OBJECTIVE: In an attempt to discover new classes of anti-irritant compounds without anesthetic properties, I observed that topical application of strontium salts to intact skin produced potent suppression of sting, burn, and itch caused by many irritant chemicals. METHODS: Chemically and biologically unrela

7 years experience of photopatch testing with sunscreen allergens in Sweden.

Since 1990 7 sunscreen allergens have been included in the standard photopatch protocol at 2 Swedish dermatology clinics. 355 consecutive patients with suspected photosensitivity were tested, and in 28 of these (7.9%), a total of 42 allergic reactions were found. 80% of the reactions were of photocontact origin. The most common allergen was benzophenone-3 (Eusolex 4360), with 15 photocontact and 1 contact allergic reactions, followed by isopropyl dibenzoylmethane (Eusolex 8020) (8 photocontact, 4 contact) and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (Parsol 1789), with 6 photocontact reactions. Skin2--an in vitro human skin model: the correlation between in vivo and in vitro testing of surfactants.

The availability of an in vitro test system to replace animal testing of potential irritants is becoming more and more urgent especially in Europe as a consequence of the European Community Cosmetics Directive. To evaluate the ability of Advanced Tissue Sciences' (ATS) ZK1301 skin model to predict the skin irritation potential of surfactants, we performed a pilot validation study utilizing four different laboratories. The in vitro protocol was designed as a quantitative pre-screen for the clinical patch studies. Sixteen substances, representing various surfactant categories and ranges of irrit

Contact dermatitis to foods and spices.

Cutaneous reactions to foods and spices occur in both the workplace and at home in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. As spices are also used in cosmetics and perfumes other exposures are found. Several patterns have been described upon contact with food including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, phototoxic contact dermatitis, and protein contact dermatitis. The purpose of this article is to review the approach to a patient suspected of having a cutaneous reaction to food or spices, as well as discuss these reactions and the allergens tha

An in vitro strategy to evaluate the phototoxicity of solar UV at the molecular and cellular level: application to photoprotection assessment.

Skin cancers are among the most common human cancers and have an increasing incidence. The ultraviolet radiation components of sunlight play a major role in skin tumor induction and development. Cellular DNA has been identified as a target for most of the biological effects of UV, and the induction of photodamage is considered as the initiating step of photocarcinogenesis. Thus, effective photoprotection of DNA against harmful overex-posure to solar UV is a critical issue. The efficiency of a sunscreen is usually tested with respect to its ability to prevent skin erythema, but conceivably, mor

Comparison testing of the irritancy of children's liquid bubble bath using a modified human repeat insult patch test.

BACKGROUND: Bubble baths are common products used by parents with young children. Some dermatologists and pediatricians do not recommend the use of these products. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the irritancy of nine children's liquid bubble bath solutions. METHODS: A modified human repeat insult patch test (HRIPT) was used to rank order the irritancy of nine bubble bath preparations. Erythema, scaling, and fissuring were evaluated at the patch test sites. RESULTS: The nine products tested varied in their ability to cause irritation. Based on the degree of erythema, the

Effective sunscreen ingredients and cutaneous irritation in patients with rosacea.

Patients with rosacea are particularly susceptible to the irritation caused by sunscreen ingredients. The purpose of this bilateral comparison study was to examine the effects of different ingredients found in sunscreen on facial cutaneous irritancy in patients with rosacea. patients clinically diagnosed with rosacea were asked to test different preparations of common sunscreens on their faces. The results show that the presence or absence of appropriate protective ingredients, such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone in the vehicle, may prevent irritation from other sunscreen ingredients in pat

Evaluating skin-protective materials against contact irritants and allergens. An in vivo screening human model.

2 acute irritants and 1 allergen were selected: sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) representative of irritant household and occupational contact dermatitis, the combination of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) and urea to simulate diaper dermatitis, and Rhus to evaluate the effect of model protective materials. The putative protective materials and vehicle were applied to both ventral forearms of 10 subjects in each group, according to a randomized code. Test materials were spread over a marked 2.0 cm2 area, massaged in, allowed to dry for 30 min, and reapplied with another 30 min drying period. The model i

Use of Biobrane after laser resurfacing.

BACKGROUND: Laser skin resurfacing has become an ever more popular and effective technique for the treatment of photoaged skin. Often a prolonged postoperative healing period adversely affects patients and physician satisfaction. Erythema and a certain degree of patient discomfort are often believed to be inevitable as they are thought to reflect depth of wounding and consequently the efficacy of wrinkle removal. In addition, a high incidence of irritant contact dermatitis has been observed, complicating recovery. OBJECTIVE: To develop a simplified wound dressing protocol aimed at achieving m

Factors defining sensitive skin and its treatment.

BACKGROUND: Users of cosmetics and skin care products often report adverse reactions ranging from itching and dryness to intense inflammatory responses such as erythema or wheal and rash. Self-assessment is not always an accurate parameter for categorizing skin as sensitive or nonsensitive, although it can be valuable. For this reason, it is important to define sensitive skin by more objective factors. OBJECTIVE: Studies were undertaken to determine if objective biophysical measurements could detect differences in barrier function between those individuals who identified themselves as having

Cytokines and irritant contact dermatitis.

Skin irritation is a complex phenomenon that involves resident epidermal cells, fibroblasts of dermis, and endothelial cells as well as invading leukocytes interacting with each other under the control of a network of cytokines and lipid mediators. Keratinocytes play an important role in the initiation and perpetuation of skin inflammatory reactions through the release of, and responses to cytokines. While resting keratinocytes produce some cytokines constitutively, a variety of environmental stimuli, such as tumor promoters, ultraviolet light and chemical agents, can induce epidermal keratino
