Reports of contact sensitization and photocontact sensitization induced by various sunscreening agents are reviewed. Current knowledge about the most often used sunscreening agents is summarized. The problems of cross-sensitization and sensitization in photodermatoses are discussed. Strategies for patch and photopatch testing, as well as immediate-type testing, are critically evaluated.

Isothipendyl, an H1-receptor antagonist, is an antihistamine used as an antiallergic drug. Its molecular structure is close to the phenothiazines, but it has different photobiological properties. Like phenothiazines, isothipendyl is phototoxic with ultraviolet A (UVA) but it reduces the erythema response to UVB radiation. Isothipenyl seems to have the same protective properties as a sunscreen because its UVB protective properties are effective only if the substance is applied prior to exposure.

In a multicentre study, the value of adding sorbitan sesquioleate (SSO) to the constituents of the 8% fragrance mix (FM) was investigated. In 7 centres, 709 consecutive patients were tested with 2 types of FM from different sources, its 8 constituents with 1% SSO, its 8 constituents without SSO, and 20% SSO. 5 patients (0.71%) reacted to the emulsifier SSO itself, read as definitely allergic on day 3/4. 53 patients reacted to either one of the mixes with an allergic type of reaction. Cetrimide and chlorhexidine are widely used antiseptics. Irritant contact dermatitis from cetrimide has been reported, but only rarely and without pathologic study. We report the clinical and pathologic findings from a series of 18 cases of contact dermatitis caused by antiseptic solutions containing 3% cetrimide and 0.3% chlorhexidine. The patients consisted of 10 males and 8 females, aged from 2 to 62 years. Most patients developed pruritic, burning or painful rashes over the flexors and genitalia after 1 to 4 weeks of daily use of undiluted antiseptics for an underlying pruritic dermatosis.

The aim of this study was to verify the most suitable vehicle and concentration for testing Euxyl K 400 and its individual ingredients, and to evaluate the prevalence of sensitization to this preservative over the years in Italy. Putative allergens in, clinical manifestations of, and patch tests with traditional Chinese medicinal materials (CMM) causing contact dermatitis (CD) were studied. 14 patients with CMM CD and 351 controls were patch tested with the standard series of allergens of Beijing Medical University and the suspected drug, as is. Factors affecting immediate irritant skin reactions are poorly understood. Our purpose was to study the effect of washing on reactions to benzoic acid, a well-known immediate-type irritant. 12 test subjects washed their left upper arms with a diluted dishwashing liquid 2X daily for 6 days. Contact dermatitis among hairdressers is common. In The Netherlands, registered sick leave for hand dermatitis among hairdressers rose from 21,050 days in 1986 to 54,293 in 1991.
