Patch tests with aqueous solutions of the irritating detergent sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) elicit varying degrees of inflammation from subject to subject and from site to site. For an investigation of the causes of this variability, two patch tests with 10% aqueous solutions of SLS were applied to adjacent areas of ventral forearm skin of eighteen volunteers. The non-ionic emulsifier "nonoxynol-6" found in an industrial waterless hand cleanser induced allergic contact dermatitis on the upper extremities of a uranium mill maintenance worker. Seven patients are described who developed acute allergic contact dermatitis after using Eucerin cream on previously dermatitic skin for periods of time varying from 5 weeks to 2 years. Eucerin was preserved with 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (BNPD) in 1978 to assist in controlling a problem with Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination. Irritant skin reactions were produced within 1 h after application of the exocarp of sweet oranges or alcoholic extracts therefrom. Such reactions faded within 48 h. The exocarp, or extracts thereof, induced phototoxic reactions which were strongest at 72 h after exposure. The phototoxic reactions were only induced in natural blondes and only with some oranges. The in vivo phototoxic reactions were confirmed in vitro, causing a slight but clear photo-inhibition of Candida albicans. Only some oranges inhibited growth.

A further study of the topical effects of certain pharmaceutical and cosmetic bases on rabbit skin is reported. Cetyl alcohol, myristic acid, castor oil and sorbitol were applied in fixed doses daily for 30 days and their irritant activity was assessed. The macroscopic and microscopic changes were on the whole minimal. Castor oil alone produced some macroscopic alterations in the form of slight erythema and edema, and microscopic changes consisting of acanthosis, disorganization of the basal layer and slight infiltration of the dermis.

A comparison of the A1-test and the chamber test was made by performing epicutaneous tests simultaneously with both methods in symmetrical sites on the upper back. Irritant reactions were provoked with 1.5% benzalkonium chloride on 90 patients. A comparison was made between the guinea pig maximization test (GPMT), open epicutaneous test (OET) and chamber test (CT), and the allergens were neomycin sulphate and propylene glycol (PG). The sensitization rate for neomycin in petrolatum was 35% in GPMT, 25% in OET and 25% in CT. The corresponding figures for neomycin in PG were 30% in GPMT, 45% in OET and 32% in CT. PG caused no hypersensitivity in 118 guinea pigs. The results suggested that as a hygroscopic, irritant and penetrating vehicle PG facilitates the induction of delayed contact allergy, especially in OET.

A 4-week open cumulative irritancy test in guinea pigs discriminated between two low grade irritant vehicles, nonionic base (anhydrous) and hydrophilic ointment. The procedure might be useful as a predictive test for low grade irritants. The angry skin syndrome was established in the guinea pigs by one Freunds complete adjuvant intradermal injection on day 0, or by daily open applications of 10% sodium lauryl sulfate in petrolatum to the neck area of the animals.

The comparative acute toxicity of two peripheral sensory irritant materials, 1-chloroacetophenone (CN) and 2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS), has been investigated in several species of small mammal using solutions in polyethylene glycol 300 for intravenous, intraperitoneal and oral administration, and as pure aerosols for inhalation exposure. One of today's most decorative and popular ornamental potted plants is Croton. Handling this plant over a period of 6 months produced contact eczema of the hands in a nursery gardener.
