Diaper rash, mainly occurring as erythema and itching in the diaper area, causes considerable distress to infants and toddlers. Increasing evidence suggests that an unequal distribution of microorganisms on the skin contributes to the development of diaper dermatitis. Probiotic bacteria, like Staphylococcus epidermidis, are crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in the skin's microbiome, among others, through their fermentative metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Using a defined prebiotic as a carbon source (e.g., as part of the diaper formulation) can selectively trigger the ferm

Chemical phototoxicity is elicited after exposure of skin to photosensitive chemicals, followed by exposure to sunlight. The intensity of ultraviolet light has increased due to ozone layer destruction; therefore, interest in avoidance of the phototoxicity risk of chemicals has increased in drug discovery and product development. Based on the mechanism of chemical phototoxicity, a photosafety screening strategy focusing on the photoreactivity of chemicals and skin exposure to chemicals was proposed. In an initially-developed photosafety screening system, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay an

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction caused by direct contact with chemical substances in the environment and can either be irritant or allergic in nature. The clinical symptoms of contact dermatitis, include local skin rash, itching, redness, swelling, and lesions. Nowadays, 15-20% of people have some degree of contact dermatitis, which can be more or less severe. Immune responses in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) are due to the effects of cytokines and allergen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells on the skin. Acids and alkalis such as drain cleaners, plants such as poinsettias,

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, have significant disease burden worldwide. Although efficacious, the adverse effect profile of topical corticosteroids limits long-term use. As an alternative, cannabinoids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory therapeutic effects.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a topical cannabinoid product using dermatitis mouse model.
METHODS: Thirty-five mice were randomized into treatment groups. 12- O -tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate was used as an irritant on 1 ear with the contralateral ear

Upconverted reactive oxygen species (ROS) photosensitization with one-photon excitation mode is a promising tactic to elongate the excitation wavelengths of photosensitive dyes to near-infrared (NIR) light region without the requirement of coherent high-intensity light sources. However, the photosensitization efficiencies are still finite by the unilateral improvement of excited-state intersystem crossing (ISC) via heavy-atom-effect, since the upconverted efficiency also plays a decisive role in upconverted photosensitization. Herein, a NIR light initiated one-photon upconversion heavy-atom-fr

The risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in patients undergoing dermatologic procedures is well known. It is especially common after laser procedures and chemical peels but can be seen with any procedure. PIH is also a sequela of acne, burns, and other trauma. High-risk patients are thought to have excessive production and abnormal distribution of melanin within the skin that triggers PIH, but the exact pathophysiology is unknown.1 We define high-risk patients as Fitzpatrick skin types 3–5, those with existing PIH, or a history of PIH.1,2 Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibr

BACKGROUND: Occupational irritant hand dermatitis (OIHD) causes significant functional impairment, disruption of work, and discomfort in the working population. Different preventive measures such as protective gloves, barrier creams and moisturisers can be used, but it is not clear how effective these are. This is an update of a Cochrane review which was previously published in 2010.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of primary preventive interventions and strategies (physical and behavioural) for preventing OIHD in healthy people (who have no hand dermatitis) who work in occupations where th

Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) is an emerging human and environmental contaminant used in sunscreens and personal care products to help minimize the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. The Center for Disease Control fourth national report on human exposure to environmental chemicals demonstrated that approximately 97% of the people tested have oxybenzone present in their urine, and independent scientists have reported various concentrations in waterways and fish worldwide. Oxybenzone can also react with chlorine, producing hazardous by-products that can concentrate in swimming pools and wa

Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, used in dermatology and veterinary medicine. Like other tetracyclines, it may evoke skin phototoxic reactions related to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Melanins are biopolymers synthesised in melanocytes - highly specialised cells, localised in the basal layer of epidermis. Production of melanin is a defence mechanism against harmful effects of UV radiation, ROS and many chemical substances, including drugs. In the present study the influence of oxytetracycline and UVA radiation on darkly pigmented melanocytes viability, the melanog

Contact sensitization is common and affects up to 20% of the general population. The clinical manifestation of contact sensitization is allergic contact dermatitis. This is a clinical expression that is sometimes difficult to distinguish from other types of dermatitis, for example irritant and atopic dermatitis. Several studies have examined the pathogenesis and severity of allergic contact dermatitis by measuring the absence or presence of various biomarkers. In this review, we provide a non-systematic overview of biomarkers that have been studied in allergic contact dermatitis. These include

BACKGROUND: Strontium, zinc, and potassium salts have been demonstrated to inhibit irritation and inflammation when applied topically. Particularly, strontium chloride (SC) and potassium nitrate (KN) are reported to reduce skin and tooth sensitivity. The aim of the present study was to compare the anti-irritant effects of four inorganic salts and assign the ingredient which can suppress skin irritation due to chemical or environmental exposure, more effectively. We compared the anti-inflammatory effects of SC, strontium nitrate (SN), KN, and zinc chloride (ZC).
