Stratum corneum profiles of inflammatory mediators in patch test reactions to common contact allergens and sodium lauryl sulfate.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated allergen-specific differences in the gene expression of inflammatory mediators in patch tested skin. OBJECTIVES: To determine levels of various inflammatory mediators in the stratum corneum (SC) after patch testing with common contact allergens and the skin irritant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). METHODS: In total, 27 individuals who had previously patch tested positive to nickel, chromium, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) or para-phenylenediamine were retested and then patch tested with SLS and petrolatum, with petrolatum

Atopic dermatitis: addressing allergy, infection, itch and complementary therapies.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex condition that results from the dynamic interplay between genetic predisposition, skin barrier defects, environmental factors, and a dysfunctional immune system. As a result, AD can be complicated by irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and imbalances in the skin microbiome, which can subsequently exacerbate the severity and complicate the course of preexisting atopic disease. Itch is an important symptom of AD, as it plays a large role in the quality of life of patients and their families. Since AD is a chronic, inflammatory disease that recrudesces thr

Current knowledge on biomarkers for contact sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis.

Contact sensitization is common and affects up to 20% of the general population. The clinical manifestation of contact sensitization is allergic contact dermatitis. This is a clinical expression that is sometimes difficult to distinguish from other types of dermatitis, for example irritant and atopic dermatitis. Several studies have examined the pathogenesis and severity of allergic contact dermatitis by measuring the absence or presence of various biomarkers. In this review, we provide a non-systematic overview of biomarkers that have been studied in allergic contact dermatitis. These include

The Role of the Skin Barrier in Occupational Skin Diseases.

Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) are the second most common occupational diseases worldwide. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is the most frequent OSD, and comprises irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis. There are many endogenous and exogenous factors which affect the development of OCD, including age, sex, ethnicity, atopic skin diathesis, certain occupations and environmental factors. One of the most important contributing causes is skin barrier dysfunction. The skin provides a first-line defense from env

Contact eczema of hands caused by contact with potato protein.

INTRODUCTION: Protein contact dermatitis (PCD) is an IgE-dependent allergic reaction which, despite enormous progress in knowledge, remains a 'non-diagnosed' nosologic unit in contemporary medicine. Skin lesion, with a chronic and recurring course, are analogous with the clinical picture in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD); skin patch tests, however, are usually negative. This makes the diagnostics difficult, prevents a correct diagnosis and treatment based on the avoidance of allergen. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old woman presented with erythemato-squa

The effect of epidermal levels of urocanic acid on 25-hydroxyvitamin D synthesis and inflammatory mediators upon narrowband UVB irradiation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Urocanic acid (UCA) absorbs ultraviolet (UV)B radiation in the epidermis which may interfere with phototherapy. Therefore, the influence of individual levels of UCA on immune reactivity and vitamin D synthesis induced by narrowband UVB radiation was assessed. METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects with irritant contact dermatitis of the hands were irradiated with suberythemal doses of narrowband UVB radiation on their unaffected lower forearms on three consecutive days. Stratum corneum tape strips and epidermal interstitial fluid (ISF) as well as blood samples were analyzed. RESU

Clinical and Epidemiological Features of Paederus Dermatitis Among Nut Farm Workers in Turkey.

Paederus dermatitis is an acute irritant dermatitis resulting from contact with the hemolymph of Paederus beetles. This dermatitis mimics other infectious skin disorders, often resulting in diagnostic dilemmas. This study of 46 patients was conducted to increase awareness about Paederus dermatitis. Possible causes of a number of cases of Paederus dermatitis in Giresun, Turkey, were investigated using climate data and telephone interviews with the patients about risk factors. Insects caught by patients were identified at the species level. All patients were hazelnut farm workers and admitted to

Mechlorethamine gel for the topical treatment of stage IA and IB mycosis fungoides-type cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is an extranodal non-Hodgkins lymphoma of T-cell origin. MF is the most common type and can be stratified as early (IA-IIA) or late (IIB or greater) stage disease. Patients with patch disease usually have a benign, chronic course. Patients with plaques have a worse prognosis and need more aggressive therapy. Topical nitrogen mustard ([NM]; mechlorethamine hydrochloride) has been used for MF since the 1950s. Complete response rates reported for stage IA are 76-80% and 35-68% for stage IB. Most common toxicities reported are irritant contact dermatitis, allergic reaction a

Identifying the causes of contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis results from skin contact with an exogenous substance. It can be caused by direct contact, airborne particles, vapours or light. Individuals of any age can be affected. The two most common variants are irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). ICD is more common and has a worse prognosis. Other less common forms of contact dermatitis include photocontact allergy and, in food handlers, protein contact dermatitis. ICD is a form of eczema and is induced by direct inflammatory pathways without prior sensitisation. Classical ACD is mediated by type

[Dermatoses in the grocery industry].

Dermatological risks in supermarkets are largely comparable to those found in other workplaces such as food industry and trade in general Using two Pubmed search strings (one more specific, the other more sensitive) 11 papers were found (5 pertinent). The reasons for the little information may be the particular employment conditions that occur , in large-scale distribution. From this derives the difficulty in defining the epidemiology of skin diseases in the field and the need to refer to the literature on skin diseases in food handlers and cashiers. The most frequent dermatological disease in

Impact of glove occlusion on cumulative skin irritation with or without hand cleanser-comparison in an experimental repeated irritation model.

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis remains a substantial problem in the food processing industries. Irritants that are weak by themselves, such as glove occlusion and mild detergents, could interact to produce contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To model the irritant action of an antibacterial hand cleanser and glove occlusion, with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as a positive control. The effects of a pre-exposure cream and a post-exposure cream were also investigated. METHODS: A modified repeated short-time occlusive irritation test with 20 healthy volunteers, and application of irritants ov
