Cutaneous reactions to foods represent one of the most common presentations of food allergy in children. IgE-mediated (urticaria, angioedema, flushing, pruritus), cell-mediated (contact dermatitis, dermatitis herpetiformis), mixed IgE- and cell-mediated (atopic dermatitis), and nonimmune-mediated (irritant contact dermatitis, Frey's syndrome) reactions to foods have all been reported. It is important for the pediatrician to recognize the variety of skin reactions potentially related to food allergy and to consider timely referral to an allergy specialist for further evaluation and definitive d

OBJECTIVES: Due to increased occupational dermatoses in certain professions such as health care workers (HCW), cleaning and kitchen employees (CKE), measures of prevention and skin protection are of high significance. Skin protection courses focus on educational aims (e.g. improving skin care habits, influencing the participants' attitudes towards health) and medical aims (e.g. optimising diagnostic procedures, complementing individual therapy).
METHODS: Participants are patients who have been suspected to suffer from an occupational skin disease and are insured with the German Accident Preve

Rosacea is a common, recurrent, inflammatory dermatologic disorder characterized by the presence of facial erythema, visible blood vessels, papules, and pustules. The condition may cause serious psychologic morbidity and may significantly affect quality of life. The first topical rosacea therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration was metronidazole for the treatment of inflammatory lesions and erythema. Previously, metronidazole was available as a 0.75% gel. Improved solubility was achieved in a new, stable, aqueous gel that permitted the formulation of metronidazole 1.0%. This new

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies indicate that occupational hand eczema (OHE) often is associated with persistent dermatitis and prolonged sick leave, which may lead to unemployment. Previous studies suggest that OHE caused by allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (AD) carries the worst prognosis.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the severity and consequences of recognized OHE in different diagnostic and subdiagnostic groups.
METHODS: Between October 2001 and November 2002, all new cases of recognized OHE were identified from the Danish National Board of Industrial Injuries

Biogenic amines are potential irritants e.g. in fish-, meat-, milk- and egg-processing professions like cooks, butchers and bakers. The aim of this study was to test the irritative and barrier-disrupting properties of the biogenic amines ammonium hydroxide (AM), dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA). A repeated sequential irritation of 30 min twice per day was performed over a total of 4 days (tandem repeated irritation test) on the back of 20 healthy volunteers of both sexes with AM, DMA, TMA and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). The epidermal barrier function was assessed with a Tewameter

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is one of the most frequent types of occupational dermatitis. Different factors are involved in the development of contact dermatitis. In the food-processing industry, the combined exposure to different irritants may be involved in the development of ICD. Few data have been published regarding the irritant potential of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in combination with cold.
OBJECTIVES: The present study was intended to analyse whether cold exposure and low skin temperature influence the development of ICD.
METHODS: Twenty (part I) and 12 (part II)

Combined exposure to different irritants in the workplace may lead to irritant contact dermatitis, which is the main type of occupational dermatitis among bakers and confectioners. Following previous work on "tandem irritation", a panel of healthy volunteers was exposed twice daily for 4 days to the organic fruit acids: citric, malic, and lactic acid, either alone or in tandem application with 0.5% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in a repetitive irritation test. Irritant cutaneous reactions were quantified by visual scoring and non-invasive measurement of transepidermal water loss and skin colour

The object of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of norbornene fluoroalcohol (NBFOH), which is used as an intermediate in the production of fluorinated monomers and polymers. NBFOH was evaluated for acute oral, dermal, and inhalation toxicity, dermal sensitization using the Local Lymph Node Assay (LLNA), mutagenesis by the Ames assay, and subchronic toxicity in a 4-week inhalation rat study. NBFOH demonstrated slight acute toxicity in oral, dermal, and inhalation studies. Approximate lethal doses of 3400 and > 5000 mg/kg for the oral and dermal routes, respectively, and an approximate let

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Phytophotodermatitis (PPD) is defined as a phototoxic reaction of the skin after contact with substances derived from plants and subsequent exposure to sunlight. It is a frequent disease in our outpatient clinics during summer because of contact with Tahitian lemon. Our objectives were to experimentally reproduce PPD in rats, to identify whether PPD is induced by minimal exposure periods to sunlight, to find what kinds of lemons and which parts of the lemon (the fruit juice or the peel juice) may trigger the disease; to know whether the use of sunblock prevents the reaction; a

Irritant dermatitis and eczema are the most prevalent occupational skin diseases. Less common are immediate contact reactions such as contact urticaria and protein contact dermatitis. Occupational contact urticaria can be subdivided into two categories, immunological and non immunological. However, some agents can induce these two types of reactions. Contact urticaria to natural rubber latex is particularly frequent among health care personnel, but contact urticaria to a wide variety of other substances occurs in many other occupations. Among those at risk are cooks, bakers, butchers, restaura

The skin is very much exposed to food contact, both in the occupational and nonoccupational settings. Through such an exposure, adverse reactions can occur that may be irritant or immunologic. Both such types of reactions are particularly common in children with atopic dermatitis. Immunologic reactions can be immediate (immunoglobulin E-mediated) or delayed (cell-mediated), and can be localized or systemic. The latter can be life-threatening, even following trivial exposure. Clinical and experimental data are accumulating to indicate that epicutaneous exposure to food can induce de novo system

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous exposure to a variety of irritants has been extensively studied in recent years. Nevertheless, knowledge of the induction of irritant dermatitis, especially by mild irritants at low doses and for a short duration of exposure, is still incomplete.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the irritant effects and barrier disruption properties of ascorbic acid (ASC), acetic acid (ACA) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), particularly in combination with an anionic detergent, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS).
METHODS: In a tandem repeated irritation test, the irritants were applied for 30 min twice dai

In Germany the most frequent initial report of occupational disease is due to occupational skin diseases ("Berufskrankheitenanzeige nach Nr. 5101 der Berufskrankheitenverordnung") defined as "severe or recurrent skin diseases that force the discontinuation of any activity that causes or that could be causing the development, the worsening, or the recurrence of the skin disease". The majority of these occupational skin diseases consists of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. In contrast, work place- related Type I allergy (contact urticaria syndrome) is less frequent, but carries the risk

The skin is the largest body's organ, with a well defined functional lymphoid tissue. This organ can be the target of several hypersensitivity-mediated diseases, that are both, genetically determined and influenced by environmental factors. In this paper the main clinical features and the current treatment modalities for the most frequent allergic cutaneous diseases are reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), provoked by work materials or workflows, is believed to be a frequent cause of occupational skin disease (OSD). Data of incidence rates of ICD within different occupations are inadequate.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a population-based study to identify occupational groups at risk for irritant and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).
METHODS: The data are based on all workers' compensation claims reported to our register of OSDs in Northern Bavaria [Berufskrankheitenregister Haut-Nordbayern (BKH-N)], Germany.
RESULTS: From 1990 to 1999, 5285 patients

INTRODUCTION: The murine local lymph node assay (LLNA) was developed as an alternative to guinea pig models for the assessment of the xenobiotic contact sensitization potential. However, it would be advantageous to have an alternative endpoint to the usual radioisotopic-dependent measures. In the present study, we investigated the development of a nonradioisotopic endpoint for LLNA using immunohistochemistry.
METHODS: Female Balb/c mice were treated by the topical application of strong sensitizers, 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and a strong irritant, sodium l

Occupational skin diseases (OSD) are among the most frequent occupational diseases (OD). Compared to other occupations, bakers, confectioners and employees in the catering trades are at a high risk of developing OSD. In January 1999, the interdisciplinary Skin Disease Prevention Program in the Baking, Hotel and Catering Industries (SDPP) conducted by the Department of Dermatology and Allergology at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, in cooperation with the Research Center for Applied System Safety and Industrial Medicine, Erfurt, and the technical experts at the Social Insurance for the

Although the role of T cells in skin contact sensitivity (CS) immune reactions has been intensely studied, much less is known about the regulatory properties of T cells in the oral mucosa. Animal experiments have shown that hapten sensitization of the ectodermal oral mucosa leads to antigen-specific hypersensitivity reactions in the skin. Furthermore, oral mucosa or skin hapten sensitization resulted in CS inflammatory reactions in the oral mucosa on challenge. The oral mucosa CS responses were similar to those found skin with regard to cell phenotypes and cytokines. CS-like reactions were als
