[Early Intervention by a Ward Pharmacist for the Hyperzincemia Caused by Zinc Oxide Ointment in a Infant with Diaper Dermatitis: A Case Report].

Although zinc oxide ointment is commonly used to treat diaper dermatitis in infants, there exists limited evidence of pharmacists suspecting hyperzincemia due to zinc oxide ointment and early intervention for mitigation of severity. This case study is female infant who was born at 27 weeks and 1 d of gestation and weighing 542 g. On postnatal 49 d, the serum zinc concentration was 65 µg/dL. Thereafter, treatment with oral zinc acetate hydrate (2 mg/kg/d) began on 56 d for ameliorating hypozincemia. Zinc oxide ointment was administered on 86 d as a treatment for diaper dermatitis. Despite of at

Glove Reuse Limits in Hair Dyeing: Permeation of p-Phenylenediamine and Aminophenols Through Natural Rubber Latex and Neoprene After Repeated Washing.

BACKGROUND: Hairdressers often reuse disposable gloves, yet the effect of repeated washing on protection against oxidative hair-dye sensitizers is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine how reuse and wash type influence the permeation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and aminophenols through natural-rubber-latex (NRL) and neoprene gloves. METHODS: Closed-loop ASTM F739 tests (27°C) were run for five consecutive 8-h exposures, each followed by either a water-only rinse or a detergent wash. Breakthrough time (BT), steady-state permeation rate (PR) and cumulative permeated mass (CPM) were quantified; lin

Application of a next generation risk assessment framework, integrated testing strategy defined approaches and read-across for evaluating the skin sensitization potency: Case studies with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and 5,5'-oxydimethylenebis (2-furfural).

Evaluating skin sensitization is crucial for the safety of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Regulatory bans on animal testing have spurred the development of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), Integrated Testing Strategies (ITS), and Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA). Defined Approaches (DAs) that combine various NAMs have been developed to assess skin sensitization hazards and potency, as recognized by the OECD. However, deriving a quantitative point of departure (PoD) through NAMs in accordance with NGRA remains challenging. This study evaluated the skin sensitization hazard and potency o

Evaluation of the efficacy of local application of bee products in the care of diaper dermatitis in infants: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of a barrier cream containing propolis, beeswax, queen bee larvae, and vegetable oil (barrier cream 1) with those of zinc oxide (barrier cream 2) and olive oil on the healing of mild diaper dermatitis (DD). METHODS: A single-blind, parallel-group, pretest-posttest, repeated-measures randomized controlled trial was conducted. The study included infants aged 1-6 months diagnosed with mild DD, who were recruited from three family health centers and a pediatric outpatient clinic in a public hospital in a district of the

Repeated Exposure to Hydroperoxides of Linalool Induces Immunologically Verified Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Fragrance allergens are a leading cause of contact allergy (CA). Linalool, common in cosmetics and household products, forms sensitising hydroperoxides (Lin-OOH) upon air exposure. Lin-OOH is linked to a high prevalence (3.9%-11.7%) of positive patch test results, but often gives rise to doubtful or irritant reactions. OBJECTIVES: To reassess patch test concentrations of Lin-OOH, determine elicitation threshold under repeated exposure, and explore associated immunological responses. METHODS: Patch testing was followed by a twice daily, 21 days repeated open application test (ROAT

Cosmeticorexia: What It Is, Where It Comes from, and Why It Matters.

Cosmeticorexia (also called dermorexia) refers to a culturally reinforced preoccupation or obsession with achieving "flawless" skin that can lead to excessive, age-inappropriate, or compulsive use of cosmetic products and procedures. The phenomenon is intensified by the medicalization of beauty, the growth of "cosmeceutical" markets, and social media platforms that reward routine-based content and appearance-focused self-presentation. Emerging signals indicate that exposure and uptake are happening at increasingly younger ages, raising concerns about irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, s

Dermatologists' Perspectives on Skincare Routine Trends.

BACKGROUND: Multi-step skincare routines have become increasingly popular, particularly among adolescents and young adults, driven by social media exposure and commercial marketing. Although individual skincare ingredients have demonstrated efficacy for specific dermatological conditions, evidence supporting the routine use of elaborate multi-step regimens in otherwise healthy skin remains limited. Concerns have been raised regarding potential adverse effects and misinformation, especially among younger users. OBJECTIVE: To explore dermatologists' perspectives on multi-step skincare routines,

Pediatric Hair Cosmetics: Physiology, Safety, and Product Considerations.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric hair care has particular challenges due to differences between children's hair and scalp and those of adults in physiology, structure, and barrier function. These differences support the need for evidence-based hair care. SUMMARY: This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge on pediatric hair physiology, hair shaft structure, and the use of common hair products. Central physiologic aspects include lower sebum production, age-dependent changes in hair density, and structure-related variability among hair types. Age-related variations influence how hair care product

Potential Dangers of Adult Cosmetics to Preteen and Teenage Girls.

Cosmetic use among preteens and adolescents is increasingly common, fueled by social media trends and marketing campaigns that blur the lines between childhood innocence and adult beauty culture. Although these products are often marketed as safe, many contain chemicals of concern, including endocrine-disruptions agents, allergens, and potential carcinogens. Early and prolonged exposure during critical stages of growth raises important questions about immediate and long-term health consequences. Children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable because their skin barrier is thinner and more p

Prevalence of contact sensitisation among patients with hand eczema and factors associated with contact sensitisation and disease severity.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hand eczema is a debilitating skin disease. The aetiology of hand eczema can be due to irritant contact, allergic contact or a manifestation of endogenous eczema. Identification of sensitisers and subsequent avoidance of relevant sensitisers may improve care of chronic hand eczema patients. We aimed to study the prevalence and pattern of sensitisation, factors associated with sensitisation and severity of hand eczema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted over a six month period between January to June 2025 at the Department of Dermatology in a ter

A proposed evaluation of new approach methodologies for dermal toxicity assessment of botanicals.

BACKGROUND: Botanicals are widely used in topical formulations for cosmetics, hair care, and personal care products, reflecting consumer interest in plant-derived materials. Their complex and variable composition, presents challenges for traditional toxicological approaches developed for single chemicals. Although many botanicals are well tolerated, reports of skin irritation, sensitization, and phototoxicity highlight the need for reliable approaches to identify dermal hazards and evaluate risk. Established in silico, in chemico, and in vitro test methods, often referred to as New Approach Me

Contact Allergy to Alkyl Glucosides: A Review. Part 2.

This is the second part of a two-part narrative review of contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis to alkyl glucosides (AGs), presenting patient demographics, products causing allergic contact dermatitis, patch test considerations, co-/cross-reactions, and the presence of AGs in cosmetics and other products. There are strong indications that atopic patients, or at least those with a history of atopic dermatitis, have an increased risk of becoming sensitized to AGs. This results in higher prevalences of sensitization to AGs in pediatric populations. Female sex does not appear to be a ris
