16 cases of allergic eczema from a resin used in a surgical adhesive (Alphacopal) are described. Because of the extreme confusion regarding the nomenclature and origin of the resins called copals and damars, this report attempts to give a terminological, botanical, physico-chemical and allergological restatement of this problem. Copals and damars are produced by trees belonging to the Araucariaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Dipterocarpaceae and Burseraceae families. We suggest that the word "copal" be reserved for the resins of the Caesalpiniaceae and that of "damar" for the resins of the Dipterocarpa

In order to identify California agricultural workers at high risk for occupational skin disease, we evaluated the distribution of 2,722 claims for lost-work-time skin conditions reported between 1978 and 1983 by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and source of illness. In the period from 1983 through 1986, 365 consecutive patients suspected as having allergic contact dermatitis were tested for reaction to Kathon CG. As shown in the preceding paper, propolis or bee-glue is the cause of an increasing number of allergic reactions in persons using it in external preparations and cosmetics. Although reactions to cyanoacrylate glues are considered rare, more widespread use of these products by nail salons is likely to be associated with an increased incidence of positive reactions. For qualitative and quantitative analysis of musk ambrette and 4 other nitromusk compounds (musk ketone, moskene, musk tibetine, musk xylene) thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques were developed.
