Allergic contact dermatitis from stearamidoethyl diethylamine phosphate: a cosmetic emulsifier.

Contact dermatitis to the emulsifier stearamidoethyl diethylamine phosphate was demonstrated in 4 patients. In 3 patients, the emulsifier was present in a commonly used over-the-counter dry skin lotion and in the 4th in a deodorant. In 2 cases, the patients overtly suspected that the product was the cause of the dermatitis. Patch tests to the products were positive. The emulsifier was identified as the contact allergen after testing with coded deletion and/or individual ingredient samples provided by the manufacturer. No apparent cross reactions were found from testing with the standard screen

Sensitivity to alpha-amylcinnamic aldehyde and alpha-amylcinnamic alcohol.

Sensitivity to alpha-amylcinnamic aldehyde (alpha-AcAld) is apparently uncommon, but, like allergy to alpha-amylcinnamic alcohol (alpha-AcAlc), it often accompanies allergy to the perfume in Mycolog cream. Although alpha-AcAlc is a known ingredient, alpha-AcAld is not. However, gas-liquid chromatographic analysis shows alpha-AcAld to be present. Of fourteen persons sensitive to either chemical, ten reacted to both. Of these, one man and three women were markedly sensitive, and all three women had chronic recalcitrant vulvar eczema. That condition might have been the cause as well as the result

[Contact sensitization to an antiperspirant with the active ingredient propantheline bromide].

In five patients developing axillary contact dermatitis subsequent to the use of an antiperspirant containing propantheline bromide patch testing was performed. Three patients reacted to propantheline bromide. The other two patients exhibited positive patch test reactions to the proprietary product; in these cases, the active ingredient was not tested individually. In all five patients, in addition to the antiperspirant, at least one other contact allergen was identified. In case of localized adverse reactions due to topical treatment of hyperhidrosis axillaris patch testing is recommended. If

Dermatology and the cosmetic industry.

Synopsis Co-operation between the cosmetic industry and dermatology is essential for identifying potentially hazardous substances and ensuring optimal product safety. With dermatological consultation, epidemiological surveys of patients or employees in the cosmetic, toiletry or chemical industry provide useful information to distinguish product-induced or occupational dermatitis from other types of contact dermatitis or constitutional disease (such as psoriasis, lichen planus, or disorders of collagen or immune response). Some examples of the inherent complexities of this process and the solut

[Contact allergy to Anacardiaceae. A review and case reports of poison ivy allergy in central Europe].

In Europe, as opposed to North America, poison-ivy rash is hardly known. For this reason a detailed review of the allergenic members of the Anacardiaceae family is given, and the misleading nomenclature of "poison ivy", "poison oak", and some other species of this family are discussed. An up-to-date representation of the chemical structure of the allergenic substance group (denoted as "Urushiol") from this family is provided as well as botanical information regarding the plants themselves. Prevention of this dangerous sensitization and the therapy of this allergic reaction are discussed. The f

Detergent enzymes and occupational safety. Observations on sensitization during Esperase production.

During a 10-year survey of 667 workers producing the detergent enzyme Esperase, derived from an alkolophilic strain of Bacillus licheniformis, 31 were found to have been sensitized. All but one were at the same time sensitized to subtilisins, with which they also had been working. No distinction could be made between symptoms attributed to Esperase and symptoms attributed to enzymes derived from Bacillus subtilis (licheniformis) or other enzymes. Symptoms, when present, were mainly from the lower respiratory tract. Nine sensitized workers were symptom-free. Sensitization was by IgE antibodies

Fine-specificity of the immune response to oxazolone. I. Contact sensitivity and early antibodies.

The specificity of the contact sensitivity induced by various chemically related oxazolones was studied. Mice were painted with 1 of them (immunogen). They were divided into several groups and challenged (ear painting on day 5) with various concentrations of either the immunogen or a related oxazolone. The degree of the contact sensitivity was estimated by ear weight or by incorporation of a DNA precursor. Higher concentrations of a challenge compound elicited a stronger DTH reaction than lower concentrations. The efficiency of each compound was defined by the concentration that caused a 30% i

Photoallergic contact dermatitis to musk ambrette. Clinical report of two patients with persistent light reactor patterns.

Two male patients with photoallergic contact dermatitis to musk ambrette, 2-methoxy-3,5-dinitro-4-methyl-t-butylbenzene, are reported. Musk ambrette is a synthetic fragrance material commonly used in foods and cosmetics. The clinical distribution of lesions presented by these patients strongly suggested an adverse reaction to light. Over a period of several years no etiology had been determined in these cases despite extensive testing and hospitalization. Photopatch tests to musk ambrette were positive. No other etiology for photosensitivity was found. This report emphasizes that exposure to h

[Allergic eczematous contact dermatitis due to fatty acid polypeptide condensates (author's transl)].

After an electrocardiogram an eczematous contact dermatitis was found on the skin of a 34-year-old soldier, where the contact of the leads had been fixed to the chest and extremities. 5 months later, he caught an eczematous contact dermatitis which spread over the face after irrigation of the external auditory meatus. In both cases, the contact allergen was a fatty acid polypeptide condensate. This article describes the production, properties and application of the fatty acid polypeptide condensates as well as effects and side-effects in comparison to other detergents.

Allergic contact dermatitis from oxygen cannulas.

A patient experienced allergic contact dermatitis on two occasions two months apart as a result of wearing the same brand of polyvinyl chloride oxygen cannula. In one instance the cannula was removed and not replaced, as continuing oxygen was unnecessary; on the other occasion the original cannula was replaced by a cannula of another brand. In both cases the dermatitis disappeared after removal of the original cannula. The reaction was probably to a resin remaining in the polyvinyl chloride after the curing process in the manufacture of the plastic from which the cannula was made. Allergic rea

Contact dermatitis in children due to face paints.

A four-year-old girl in whom severe, acute contact dermatitis of the face developed following a face painting party is presented herein. Subsequent investigation established that the paints consisted of tempera pigments mixed in a full-strength commercial dishwashing liquid. Similar contact dermatitis developed in at least five other children, all of whom had continued to wear the face paints overnight while sleeping. The dishwashing liquid was implicated as the causative factor in the eruption. Since a full-strength commercial dishwashing detergent may cause severe irritant contact dermatitis

Brilliant Lake Red R as a cause of pigmented contact dermatitis.

Twenty-three patients suffering from pigmented contact dermatitis caused by cosmetics containing Brilliant Lake Red R were observed. Commercial samples of Brilliant Lake Red R proved to contain many ethyl acetate extractable impurities; 1-phenylazo-2-naphthol and azobenzene were isolated and identified. To determine the responsible allergens, five patients were examined by patch tests with purified samples of azo-dyes and the unidentified fractions of ethyl acetate extractable impurities. Three out of five showed weaker reactions to purified samples of Brilliant Lake Red R and the other two sh

Bronchial asthma and dermatitis due to spiramycin in a chick breeder.

A case of bronchial asthma and dermatitis due to spiramycin is described in a non-atopic woman who worked as a chick breeder and handling poultry feed containing antibiotic or chemoterapic drugs including spiramycin, chlortetracycline and sulfadimethoxine. Patch tests showed a vigorous delayed reaction to spiramycin. Inhalation challenge test with the chick feed containing spiramycin reproduced symptoms of late asthmatic response (FEV1 fell by 14% and FEF25-75 by 25% within the 4th and 6th hour) with leucocytosis. No significant modification of FEV1 and FEF25-75 was observed within 24 hours af

Athletic shoe dermatitis. Contact allergy to ethyl butyl thiourea.

Ten patients with severe foot dermatitis were found to be highly allergic to innersole material prepared by Spenco Medical Corporation and used in Nike athletic shoes. Contact allergy testing showed sensitivity to ethyl butyl thiourea, a chemical accelerator in some neoprene (polychioroprene) rubber products. The dermatitis was recalcitrant and in many cases persisted long after discontinuance of wearing Nike shoes, raising the concern that traces of ethyl butyl thiorea or cross-reacting chemicals may be present in other footwear.

[Some experiments on the allergic reaction among workers in a pharmaceutical factory (author's transl)].

A survey was made on workers handling powdered drugs in a pharmaceutical factory. In this factory, two kinds of anti-inflammatory enzyme (bromelain and trypsin), one anti-inflammatory agent (flufenamic acid), one antispasmodic (flopropion) and two kinds of antibiotics (ampicillin and cephalexin) are mainly produced. Twenty four workers were examined by interviews and checked by Cornell Medical Index, and 18 of them complained of respiratory symptoms. These 18 workers were physically examined by skin scratch tests, pulmonary function tests and serum immunological tests. Among 24 workers, 9 hand

Toxicologic properties of fluorescent whitening agents.

From the collection of toxicologic data, it is seen that the fluorescent whitening agents are a well-investigated class of compounds. Only in one of the groups of compounds investigated did it appear advisable to discontinue the use of a particular product on the basis of the toxicologic findings. In the large number of the other cases, the findings indicate that there is a considerable degree of toxicologic safety in the use of the FWAs in soap and detergent products.

Immune responses to environmental antigens that act on the skin: the role of lymphokines in contact dermatitis.

Immune responses to enviornmental agents affecting the skin may take various clinical forms, among which contact dermatitis is the most prominent representative of delayed-type hypersensitivity. Whereas in industrialized countries a relatively restricted amount of chemical agents is responsible for the majority of contact dermatitis cases, other factors from the environment such as natural flora, seasonal or nutritional factors may also play a role. Like other immune responses, contact dermatitis is strongly influenced by genetic factors and the existence of immune response genes, in part link

[Skin diseases and working disability in the Netherlands. II. Catamnestic study in 3 groups of patients with occupational contact eczema].

A follow-up study was performed of the medical and social condition of 164 patients with an occupational allergic contact dermatitis. A change of work did not always lead to an improvement of the dermatitis. A number of patients improved without changing their job. It is suggested that a change of occupation can only be advised to these patients if the causal allergen can be avoided completely by doing so and only by doing so; at the same time one must reckon with other aetiologic factors and the social situation after change of work. Moreover it is pointed out that patients who changed their

Toxicity and health effects of selected organotin compounds: a review.

The toxicity of selected tin compounds is reviewed. Over the years, a variety of uses has been found for organic and inorganic tin compounds, as fungicides, as stablizers in plastics, moluscicides, and miticides; they have also been suggested as insect chemosterilants and for other industrial uses. Many of these products are unpalatable when mixed into diets and have been suggested as rodent repellents. Inhaling tin as dust or fumes may cause a benign pneumoconiosis in exposed workers. The organotin compounds can be divided into alkyltin and aryltin compounds. The trimethyl and triethyltin com
