Oat (Avena sativa L.) Sprouts Restore Skin Barrier Function by Modulating the Expression of the Epidermal Differentiation Complex in Models of Skin Irritation.

Oats (Avena sativa L.) are used as therapeutic plants, particularly in dermatology. Despite numerous studies on their skin moisturization, anti-inflammation, and antioxidation effects, the precise molecular mechanisms of these effects are only partially understood. In this study, the efficacy of oat sprouts in the treatment of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) was investigated, and their specific phytoconstituents and exact mechanisms of action were identified. In the in vivo ACD model, by stimulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway, oat sprouts increased the expression

Occupational Contact Dermatitis Caused by Artichokes.

Introduction: Few cases of skin diseases caused by exposure to artichokes have been published. Artichokes contain sesquiterpene lactones, which are known to be sensitizing. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) has also been diagnosed. To our knowledge, no protein contact dermatitis (PCD) has yet been reported to be induced by artichoke. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the different types of contact dermatitis that may be due to occupational exposure to artichokes and the professions concerned. Materials and Methods: We conducted a descriptive study, retrieving data from the Fren

Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction and Its Role in Skin Sensitization.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays a crucial role in numerous cellular physiological processes. In the skin, NO is produced by keratinocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and immune cells and is involved in skin functions such as vasodilation, pigmentation, hair growth, wound healing, and immune responses. NO modulates both innate and adaptive immune responses. As a signaling molecule and cytotoxic effector, NO influences the function of immune cells and production of cytokines. NO is a key mediator that protects against or contributes to skin inflammation. Moreover, NO ha

Humulus japonicus ameliorates irritant contact dermatitis by suppressing NF‑κB p65‑dependent inflammatory responses in mice.

As a type of contact dermatitis (CD), irritant CD (ICD) is an acute skin inflammation caused by external irritants, such as soap, water and chemicals. Humulus japonicus (HJ) is a herbal medicine widely distributed in Asian countries and has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. The current study aimed to investigate the anti-dermatitis effect of HJ on ICD and determine the molecular basis of this effect using 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced dermatitis mice models and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Mice were orally administered HJ and

Properties and safety of topical dihydroxyacetone in sunless tanning products: A review.

Sunless tanning products have risen in popularity as the desire for a tanned appearance continues alongside growing concerns about the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure from the sun. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a simple carbohydrate found nearly universally in sunless tanning products that serves to impart color to the skin. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates sunless tanning products as cosmetics, allows DHA for external use while maintaining that its ingestion, inhalation, or contact with mucosal surfaces should be avoided. Given its widespread use and a

Nanoencapsulation of Tea Catechins for Enhancing Skin Absorption and Therapeutic Efficacy.

Tea catechins are a group of flavonoids that show many bioactivities. Catechins have been extensively reported as a potential treatment for skin disorders, including skin cancers, acne, photoaging, cutaneous wounds, scars, alopecia, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and microbial infection. In particular, there has been an increasing interest in the discovery of cosmetic applications using catechins as the active ingredient because of their antioxidant and anti-aging activities. However, active molecules with limited lipophilicity have difficulty penetrating the skin barrier, resulting in low bioa

When Foods Cause Itch: Clinical Characteristics, Pathophysiology, and Recommendations for Food-Induced Skin and Mucosal Pruritus.

Itch occurs in various dermatologic and systemic conditions. Many patients report that certain foods instigate itch, although there is limited published information in dermatology on food-induced pruritus. In addition, itch severity is rarely mentioned. Food can induce pruritus through either ingestion or direct contact with skin or mucosal membranes. The most common type of itch provoked by food is acute urticaria, often through the classical immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated pathway. Other mechanisms include non-IgE-mediated, mixed (IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated), T-cell-mediated, and noni

Possibility of mechanical transmission of parapoxvirus by houseflies (Musca domestica) on cattle and sheep farms.

Parapoxvirus (PPV) causes papular stomatitis and contagious pustular dermatitis in ruminants worldwide. The virus is generally transmitted through close contact with skin lesions containing PPV in infected animals and indirectly through PPV-contaminated materials. PPV-infected animals frequently do not show clinical signs and the route of PPV transmission is sometimes unclear. In this study, the possibility of mechanical transmission of PPV by houseflies (Musca domestica) was investigated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) gene surveillance. Samples were collected from cattle, sheep, barn e

Occupational Dermatoses.

Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) are one of the major problems in working life. Among occupational diseases, 30-45% are skin diseases. Contact dermatitis accounts for the greatest part (95%) of OSDs. It adversely affects the quality of life of workers. Classification of OSD is too difficult as there are geographical variations in the occupational groups affected. However, commonly affected occupational groups are agricultural workers, healthcare workers, construction workers, metal workers, cleaners, housekeepers, food handlers, hairdressers, beauticians, and mechanics. Because of the unorgan

Nickel release from metal items in contact with skin: a comparison of methods and practical implications for regulation in Europe.

Contact allergy to Nickel is the most prevalent contact allergy in western societies. This has led to regulation for metallic items that come into prolonged and direct contact with the skin, such as buttons on clothing, belt buckles, jewelry and watches. In Europe, the legal provision is based on a test in which there is a limit to the amount of nickel that may be released from the item to an artificial sweat solution (EN 1811). This test is costly and has reproducibility issues. The resulting undertesting of items placed on the market, leads to many nickel releasing non-compliant articles bei

Disturbed expression of vitamin D and retinoic acid-related orphan receptors α and γ and of megalin in inflammatory skin diseases.

The pathogenesis of inflammatory skin diseases is associated with the abnormal activity of keratinocytes and immune cells infiltrate. Vitamin D3 deficiency can correlate with the increased incidence, severity and duration of inflammatory skin disorders. The exact mechanism on how vitamin D3 influences inflammatory skin diseases still requires clarification. However, it can be associated with the disturbances in transmembrane glycoprotein-LRP2/megalin, which is implicated in vitamin D3 transport to the cell, and defects in vitamin D-signalling through the nuclear receptors. Therefore, by using

Chlorogenic Acid-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Modified with Hexa-Histidine Peptides Reduce Skin Allergies by Capturing Nickel.

Nickel-induced contact dermatitis is a severe allergic reaction to objects or environments that contain nickel. Many nanomaterials have been developed to reduce skin allergies by capturing nickel, but few agents are effective and safe. In this work, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were synthesized and decorated with hexa-histidine peptides (denoted as MSN-His6), making it a strong nickel chelator. Subsequently, a dietary polyphenol, chlorogenic acid, was loaded into the mesopores of MSN (denoted as MSN-His6@CGA), realizing the potential of its anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro and i
