Online Information-Seeking Behavior for Allergies and its Association with COVID-19 Vaccine-Hesitancy in India: An Info-Epidemiologic Study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-hesitancy is an important obstacle to attain herd-immunity against COVID-19. Undue fears about adverse effects like allergic reactions may be an important reason for vaccine-hesitancy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the online information-seeking behavior of Indian internet users regarding 'allergies' and determine its association with COVID-19 vaccine-hesitancy. METHODS: We conducted a Google trend analysis to obtain the relative search volume (RSV) for keywords-'skin allergy,' 'drug allergy,' 'food allergy,' 'vaccine allergy,' 'contact dermatitis,' and 'allergy' using a public d

Autoxidized citronellol: Free radicals as potential sparkles to ignite the fragrance induced skin sensitizing pathway.

Citronellol, one of the most used fragrance compounds worldwide, is one ingredient of Fragrance Mix II used to assess skin allergy to fragrances in dermatitis patients. Pure citronellol is non-allergenic. Main issue is it autoxidizes when exposed to air becoming then allergenic. The increased skin sensitizing potency of air-exposed citronellol has been attributed to the hydroperoxides detected at high concentrations in the oxidation mixtures. It has been postulated that such hydroperoxides can give rise to specific antigens, although chemical mechanisms involved and the pathogenesis are far fr

[Allergy Diagnostics 2021].

Allergic diseases are among the most common diseases worldwide. For appropriate management knowledge of the allergy trigger is crucial. The clinical picture of allergic diseases is diverse and correct diagnosis is often a challenge. The allergist needs to distinguish intolerances from allergies and infectious diseases from non-infectious triggers. Test results have to be interpreted accordingly to differentiate sensitizations from allergies. In this review current state of the art diagnostic measures to diagnose type I and type IV allergies are described and discussed.Immediate type allergies

Sensitization properties of acetophenone azine, a new skin sensitizer identified in textile.

BACKGROUND: Acetophenone azine (CAS no. 729-43-1) present in sports equipment (shoes, socks and shin pads) has been suspected to induce skin allergies. Twelve case reports of allergy in children and adults from Europe and North America were published between 2016 and 2021. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to confirm that acetophenone azine is indeed a skin sensitizer based on in vitro/ in vivo testings derived from the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) built for skin sensitization by OECD in 2012. METHODS: Acetophenone azine was tested in vitro according to the human cell line activat

The role of skin inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and oral tolerance in skin sensitization to gluten-derived hydrolysates in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Adverse reactions to wheat-containing skin care products have been linked to food allergy development. OBJECTIVES: To determine the role of skin barrier dysfunction and inflammation in sensitization to gluten-derived hydrolysates via the skin in Brown Norway rats with and without oral tolerance to wheat. METHODS: Skin barrier defect was induced by mechanical disruption, and skin inflammation was induced by topical application of SLS or MC903. Unmodified, enzyme hydrolyzed, or acid hydrolyzed gluten products were applied to the skin three times per week for 5 weeks. Subsequently,

Skin microbiota of oxazolone-induced contact hypersensitivity mouse model.

Contact allergy is a common skin allergy, which can be studied utilising contact hypersensitivity (CHS) animal model. However, it is not clear, whether CHS is a suitable model to investigate skin microbiota interactions. We characterised the effect of contact dermatitis on the skin microbiota and studied the biological effects of oxazolone (OXA) -induced inflammation on skin thickness, immune cell numbers and changes of the microbiota in CHS mouse model (n = 72) for 28 days. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing we defined the composition of bacterial communities and associations of bacteria with i

Effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on immunity.

Nearly a quarter of the total number of deaths in the world are caused by unhealthy living or working environments. Therefore, we consider it significant to introduce the effect of a widely distributed component of air/water/food-source contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), on the human body, especially on immunity in this review. PAHs are a large class of organic compounds containing two or more benzene rings. PAH exposure could occur in most people through breath, smoke, food, and direct skin contact, resulting in both cellular immunosuppression and humoral immunosuppression

Vitamin D supplementation in patients with atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria and contact irritant and allergic dermatitis - possible improvement without risk.

Introduction: There has been a lot of talk lately about the importance of reduced serum vitamin D levels and their supplementation for patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and other allergic diseases. Serum vitamin D values are associated with a number of factors such as limited sunlight exposure (modern lifestyle, extended indoor stay, enhanced sun protection, etc.) which can affect different diseases. Aim: To evaluate serum vitamin D values in patients with inflammatory skin diseases, comparing them on the basis of other parameters (age, gender/sex, residen

Keratinocytes: An Enigmatic Factor in Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD), characterized by rashes, itching, and pruritus, is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin with a marked infiltration of inflammatory cells into the lesion. It usually commences in early childhood and coexists with other atopic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, allergic conjunctivitis, etc. With a prevalence rate of 1-20% in adults and children worldwide, AD is gradually becoming a major health concern. Immunological aspects have been frequently focused on in the pathogenesis of AD, including the role of the epidermal barrier and the consequent

Aortic gene dictionary in the precision medicine era-update from the Aortic Institute at Yale New Haven.

New insights into the pathogenesis of lymphoid malignancies have been gained through novel genetic, molecular and immunological techniques. A new classification system for lymphoid malignancies, known as the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification, has been proposed recently based on these findings. The relative incidence of the subtypes of malignant lymphoma is known to differ according to geographic location. Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a human malignancy associated with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), and the Kyushu islands are an HTLV-1 endemic area. To

The (new) occupational disease no. 5101: "Severe or recurrent skin diseases".

Occupational dermatoses are among the most common occupational diseases, with BK 5101 accounting for the largest proportion. Historically, the latter was also the most frequently reported group of occupational diseases within the working age population. More than 80,000 suspected cases of occupational diseases were notified in 2019, of which 19,883 related to BK 5101. In Germany, work-related hand eczema accounts for 90 % of all BK 5101 diseases, and consists mainly of contact eczema. Especially young people working in the hairdressing sector, health care, metal, food or construction industrie

Seeing through the Skin: Photoacoustic Tomography of Skin Vasculature and Beyond.

Skin diseases are the most common human diseases and manifest in distinct structural and functional changes to skin tissue components such as basal cells, vasculature, and pigmentation. Although biopsy is the standard practice for skin disease diagnosis, it is not sufficient to provide in vivo status of the skin and highly depends on the timing of diagnosis. Noninvasive imaging technologies that can provide structural and functional tissue information in real time would be invaluable for skin disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation. Among the modern medical imaging technologies, photoacoust

Transient symptomatic zinc deficiency in an exclusively breastfed infant.

A 3-month-old, full term female infant, adequate for gestational age, and exclusively breastfed, was admitted with a 10 day history of generalised scaling erythematous dermatitis, affecting the face (perinasal, nasolabial folds and periauricular), acral and intertriginous areas, with irritability and failure to thrive. Her mother had been treated with isoniazid since the third trimester because of family contact with tuberculosis. Based on a diagnosis of suspected impetiginised eczema, the infant was treated with flucloxacillin and prednisolone, and maternal isoniazid was suspended, with no im

Food Allergy Evaluation for Dermatologic Disorders.

Food allergy evaluation for dermatologic disorders is warranted when Type 1 allergy is suspected, and includes skin prick testing (SPT) or measurement of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. The utility of these tests for identifying triggers is improved with clinical correlation, especially for contact urticaria, and protein contact dermatitis, which are mixed mechanism diseases. In atopic dermatitis (AD), patients are at risk for development of food allergy, and screening with SPT or IgE may be considered in severe AD, especially to guide early food introduction. Management of food-relate

Sunscreens: UV filters to protect us: Part 1: Changing regulations and choices for optimal sun protection.

Sunscreens are topical preparations containing any number of ultraviolet filters (UVFs). The first part of the review will focus on the recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations of 2019 and general use of these agents. While sunscreen products are becoming more regulated in the United States, we still lag behind other countries in our options for UVFs. Sun protection to prevent skin cancer and aging changes should be a combination of sun avoidance, protective structures, and clothing as well as use of sunscreen products. Newer and safer products are needed to help supplement and re
