Medical Devices in Patients With Diabetes and Contact Dermatitis.

The development and commercialization of glucose sensors and insulin pumps has revolutionized the management of diabetes. These devices have been linked to multiple cases of contact dermatitis in recent years, however, giving rise to a growing interest in identifying the sensitizing allergens. Isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) was clearly identified as one of the main allergens responsible for contact dermatitis among users of the FreeStyle glucose sensor and was subsequently removed from the product ingredients. Remarkably, however, it is still used in most other sensors on the market. The common adh

Modulation of allergic contact dermatitis via gut microbiota modified by diet, vitamins, probiotics, prebiotics, and antibiotics.

Allergic contact dermatitis is one of the most common recorded occupational diseases. There are many different substances that the skin comes into contact with on a daily basis and that can cause ACD, e.g., preservatives, surfactants, and antimicrobial agents. The development of a mouse model of ACD has provided insight into the immune mechanisms involved. Drugs used in the treatment of skin diseases have many side effects. Therefore, alternative methods of suppressing the immune response to reduce the symptoms of skin diseases are being sought. In recent years, high hopes have been placed on

Shedding a light on the importance of photopatch testing: A 12-year experience in a dermatology unit.

BACKGROUND: Photopatch testing has been standardized for diagnosing photoallergic contact dermatitis but is still infrequently used. OBJECTIVES: To characterize photopatch test (PPT) results and their clinical relevance. METHODS: We collected retrospective data from patients photopatch tested in our Dermatology Unit (2010-2021), using the European PPT 'baseline' series, other allergens, and patient's own products, when appropriate. RESULTS: Out of 223 patients, 75 patients (33.6%) were reactive with 124 positive PPT reactions, considered relevant in 56/223 patients (25.1%) and in 72/124 rea

Pharmacological Profile of Difamilast, a Novel Selective Phosphodiesterase 4 Inhibitor, for Topical Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis.

PDE4 inhibitors are expected to be anti-inflammatory agents based on their mechanism of action, but the application of this drug class is limited by a narrow therapeutic window due to adverse effects associated with gastrointestinal function. Difamilast, a novel selective phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor, demonstrated significant efficacy without adverse reactions such as nausea and diarrhea in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and was recently approved in Japan. In this study, we investigated the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic properties of difamilast to provide nonclinical data t

It is not always chlorhexidine: Identification of benzoxonium chloride and lauramine oxide as culprit allergens in a popular antiseptic in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: A popular antiseptic spray in Switzerland (Merfen spray), containing chlorhexidine digluconate, benzoxonium chloride and lauramine oxide, is frequently used to treat skin wounds. However, it is also increasingly reported as a major cause of adverse skin reactions, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contact allergens responsible for ACD from this antiseptic. PATIENTS/METHODS: Patch tests were performed on seven patients with a clinical history compatible with contact dermatitis from this antiseptic mixture. RESULTS: All patients presented

Medical Applications and Advancement of Near Infrared Photosensitive Indocyanine Green Molecules.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is an important kind of near infrared (NIR) photosensitive molecules for PTT/PDT therapy as well as imaging. When exposed to NIR light, ICG can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can kill cancer cells and pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, the absorbed light can also be converted into heat by ICG molecules to eliminate cancer cells. In addition, it performs exceptionally well in optical imaging-guided tumor therapy and antimicrobial therapy due to its deeper tissue penetration and low photobleaching properties in the near-infrared region compared to other dyes. In

BACKGROUND: Pigmented contact dermatitis (PCD), a rare variant of non-eczematous contact dermatitis, is clinically characterized by sudden-onset brown or grey pigmentation on the face and neck. It is hypothesized to be caused by repeated contact with low levels of allergens. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the risk of using hair dyes in patients with PCD in Korea. METHODS: A total of 1033 PCD patients and 1366 controls from 31 university hospitals were retrospectively recruited. We collected and analysed the data from the patient group, diagnosed through typical clinical findings of PCD and

Anti-Inflammatory and Antipruritic Effects of Remote Ischaemic Postconditioning in a Mouse Model of Experimental Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Background and Objectives: Allergic contact dermatitis is a common type IV hypersensitivity reaction characterised by redness, itching, oedema and thickening of the skin. It occurs in about 7% of the population and its incidence is increasing. It has been observed that the preconditioning of tissues by exposing them to transient ischemia increases resistance to subsequent permanent ischemia, and this phenomenon is called ischemic preconditioning. It has been shown that conditioning in one organ can also protect other organs. The protective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning is thought t

Sunscreens: A Review of UV Filters and Their Allergic Potential.

Abstract Active ingredients of sunscreens, or UV filters, have increased in use because public awareness of sun safety has risen. In addition to this intentional use, unintentional exposures to UV filters also occur through application of personal care products, where the filters are incorporated into the product. There are 2 main types of UV filters: organic (chemical) filters and the 2 inorganic (mineral) filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) have been caused by organic filters; oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)

Non-animal approaches for photoallergenicity safety assessment: Needs and perspectives for the toxicology for the 21st century.

Certain chemicals and/or their byproducts are photoactivated by UV/VIS and trigger a dermal allergenic response, clinically recognized as photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD). It is important to identify the chemicals which are potentially photoallergenic, not only for establishing the correct differential diagnosis between PACD and other photodermatoses, but also as causative agents which should be avoided as a preventative measure. Moreover, materials with photoallergenic properties need to be correctly identified to allow thorough safety assessments for their use in finished products (e.

Fundamental Aspects and Relevance of Components in Antihistamine Eye Drops.

Ocular allergy covers a series of immune-allergic inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface, with different degrees of involvement and severity. These pathologies are caused by a variety of IgE- and non-IgE-mediated immune mechanisms and may involve all parts of the external eye, including the conjunctiva, cornea, eyelids, tear film, and commensal flora. The most frequent is allergic conjunctivitis, a condition with different clinical forms that are classified according to the degree of involvement and the presence or absence of proliferative changes in the palpebral conjunctiva, associated

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota (GM) is closely associated with the onset of depression, in which inflammation plays an essential role. Identifying specific GM associated with depression and their mechanisms, based on the principles of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM), is a critical step toward achieving targeted prevention and personalized treatment for depression. WORKING HYPOTHESIS AND METHODOLOGY: We hypothesized that both gut microbiota (GM) and cytokines influence the onset of depression, with cytokines acting as mediators of GM effects on depression.
