Pharmacological activity of p-chlorophenylamide of 3-methyl-5-benzoylaminoizothiazole-4-carboxylic acid (compound ITCl) was studied with special regard to its anti-inflammatory effect. Data were reviewed on the beneficial responses and adverse reactions among 2,849 patients in 14 paired-comparison studies with eight unoccluded topical corticosteroids in six steroid-responsive dermatoses. Adverse reactions were found to be mild, transient, and, for the most part, rare. Of 5,698 treatment exposures, 249 (4.39%) adverse reactions were reported, including irritation (1.3%), itching (0.95%), burning (0.81%), dryness (0.46%), scaling (0.30%), and vesicle formation (0.16%). Two male patients with photoallergic contact dermatitis to musk ambrette, 2-methoxy-3,5-dinitro-4-methyl-t-butylbenzene, are reported. Musk ambrette is a synthetic fragrance material commonly used in foods and cosmetics. The clinical distribution of lesions presented by these patients strongly suggested an adverse reaction to light. After an electrocardiogram an eczematous contact dermatitis was found on the skin of a 34-year-old soldier, where the contact of the leads had been fixed to the chest and extremities. 5 months later, he caught an eczematous contact dermatitis which spread over the face after irrigation of the external auditory meatus. In both cases, the contact allergen was a fatty acid polypeptide condensate. This article describes the production, properties and application of the fatty acid polypeptide condensates as well as effects and side-effects in comparison to other detergents.

A four-year-old girl in whom severe, acute contact dermatitis of the face developed following a face painting party is presented herein. Subsequent investigation established that the paints consisted of tempera pigments mixed in a full-strength commercial dishwashing liquid. Similar contact dermatitis developed in at least five other children, all of whom had continued to wear the face paints overnight while sleeping. The allergic contact dermatitis caused by iatrogenic sensibilisation represents one of the major problems involved in the local therapy of skin diseases due to chronic venous insufficiency. A case of bronchial asthma and dermatitis due to spiramycin is described in a non-atopic woman who worked as a chick breeder and handling poultry feed containing antibiotic or chemoterapic drugs including spiramycin, chlortetracycline and sulfadimethoxine. A survey was made on workers handling powdered drugs in a pharmaceutical factory. In this factory, two kinds of anti-inflammatory enzyme (bromelain and trypsin), one anti-inflammatory agent (flufenamic acid), one antispasmodic (flopropion) and two kinds of antibiotics (ampicillin and cephalexin) are mainly produced. Contact sensitivity to medicaments and other chemical allergens has been observed in about 30% of 364 patients with pompholyx. Pompholyx is a recurrent vesicular eruption which increases the incidence of contact sensitivity. The majority of patients tested by means of intradermal and cultural tests did not show any relevant finding on the microbial nature, allergic or not, of pompholyx.

From the collection of toxicologic data, it is seen that the fluorescent whitening agents are a well-investigated class of compounds. Only in one of the groups of compounds investigated did it appear advisable to discontinue the use of a particular product on the basis of the toxicologic findings. In the large number of the other cases, the findings indicate that there is a considerable degree of toxicologic safety in the use of the FWAs in soap and detergent products.

In a pharmaceutical industry, several cases of allergic contact eczema caused by the beta-adrenergic blocking agent alprenolol (Aptin) have appeared.
