Surfactants are long-chain compounds comprising a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head, lending them the ability to act as a “bridge” between oil and water. Their detergent, foaming and other properties prove useful in a number of settings, including home and workplace sanitation, cosmetics (rinse and no-rinse cleansers) and medicine. When used on skin, surfactants reduce the superficial surface tension of proteins and lipids on the stratum corneum. This helps to eliminate skin debris such as sebum, oils and dirt, but also presents a risk of damage to the skin barrier. The irritation potent

Upconverted reactive oxygen species (ROS) photosensitization with one-photon excitation mode is a promising tactic to elongate the excitation wavelengths of photosensitive dyes to near-infrared (NIR) light region without the requirement of coherent high-intensity light sources. However, the photosensitization efficiencies are still finite by the unilateral improvement of excited-state intersystem crossing (ISC) via heavy-atom-effect, since the upconverted efficiency also plays a decisive role in upconverted photosensitization. Herein, a NIR light initiated one-photon upconversion heavy-atom-fr

The occurrence of skin lesions in healthcare workers is associated with a negative impact on important skin functions, including protection from mechanical injuries, sunlight, dehydration, and penetration of chemical substances or pathogenic microorganisms. In healthcare professionals, the most common occupational skin disease is contact dermatitis (CD), either irritant (ICD) or allergic (ACD), and typically on the hands. ICD accounts for about 80% of occupational CD, making it the most frequent cause. According to the literature, CD frequency is higher among healthcare professionals than othe

Photoallergy is a photosensitivity disorder associated with a modified ability of the skin to react to the combined effect of drugs and sunlight. It has been attributed to the covalent conjugation of proteins with a photosensitizer, yielding modified macromolecules that can act as antigen provoking the immune system response. The potential role of some endogenous compounds as photoallergens has not been fully established. It has been previously proposed that pterins, which are endogenous photosensitizers present in human skin under pathological conditions, are able to covalently bind to protei

Sensitive skin exposed to external insults (i.e., allergens, chemicals, and radiation) becomes erythematosus, and with repeated aggravations may become chronically dry. This is often observed in atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, two skin conditions that display key pathogenic components: barrier dysfunction, skewed inflammatory immune response, and pruritus. Recent studies have evidenced that oxidative stress is a possible fourth component of the pathogenesis of sensitive skin. In patients with persistent disease, new agents and combination therapies that target oxidative stre

Dear Editor, Photoallergic reactions are classic T-cell-mediated or delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions of the skin in response to a photoallergen (or a cross-reacting chemical) to which a subject was sensitized in the past (1). The immune system recognizes the changes caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation; it produces antibodies and causes inflammation of the skin in the exposed areas (2). Common photoallergic drugs and ingredients are included in some sunscreens, aftershave lotions, antimicrobials (especially sulfonamides), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diuretics, antico

The skin hosts a sophisticated immune system involving responses from both innate and adaptive immune cell populations. Swine skin is close to human skin by its structure, composition and function. In addition, the minipig is considered the model of choice in toxicology studies for drugs applied by the dermal route and developed for both the adult and paediatric indications. However, knowledge on the skin immune system in minipigs, particularly in Göttingen Minipigs, is still limited. The objective of our work was first to characterize the main skin immune populations (Langerhans cells, dermal

Sunscreens are topical preparations containing any number of ultraviolet filters (UVFs). The first part of the review will focus on the recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations of 2019 and general use of these agents. While sunscreen products are becoming more regulated in the United States, we still lag behind other countries in our options for UVFs. Sun protection to prevent skin cancer and aging changes should be a combination of sun avoidance, protective structures, and clothing as well as use of sunscreen products. Newer and safer products are needed to help supplement and re

Eczematous drug eruptions are a heterogenous group of skin reactions that resemble eczema both clinically and histologically. We reviewed the literature and cataloged the systemically administered medications that cause these eruptions, along with their characteristic clinical presentations. We identified three primary pathophysiologic etiologies: (1) cutaneous immunomodulation, (2) skin dehydration, and (3) delayed hypersensitivity. Notably, eczematous eruptions caused by altered immunity in the skin may be increasing in incidence as some responsible drugs, in particular biologic therapies (s

A 45-year-old brown-skinned woman presented with a 5-year history of asymptomatic grayish brown lesions on the face, arms, and legs. She had no medical history of previous diseases or contact dermatitis. She revealed that she had used olive oil all over her body for the last 8 years every other day. Physical examination showed multiple, well-defined, oval-shaped, dark brown, smooth-surfaced macules with no elevated active borders (Figure 1). There were no associated lesions on the nails, scalp, or mucosae. Serologic tests for autoantibodies and hepatitis A, B, and C virus infections were non-r

This article discusses contact urticaria syndrome definition, history, epidemiology, occupational relevance, mechanisms, clinical manifestations, diagnostic tools, agents responsible, and how to prevent and treat the patients affected. Contact urticaria syndrome is often misdiagnosed because it is not well known or recognized by physicians. Commonly the patient recognizes the cause of the clinical symptom, but the cause can be exceptional or new. Triggers include proteins, chemical compounds, agricultural chemicals, metals, plants, foods, and other substances. The objective of this article is

Here, we present the case of a 54-year-old female presenting for outpatient ankle hardware removal who experienced severe total body pruritus along with a maculopapular rash persisting four days after the procedure. Patch testing demonstrated a sensitivity to benzyl alcohol, a preservative in propofol and several other anesthetics. The patient returned for left ankle arthroscopy a year later, and during that procedure, the anesthetic team avoided medications containing benzyl alcohol. This resulted in no pruritus or rash. Hypersensitivity reactions, ranging from contact dermatitis to anaphylax
