Comparison of ozonated water and acidified copper sulphate in prevention of digital dermatitis in dairy cows.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is the most significant infectious hoof disorder of cattle in Europe. Hoof baths are one of the most common control methods. Copper sulphate and formalin are commonly used in hoof baths, but their use is problematic in many European countries for health, environmental and safety reasons. Ozonated water and acidified copper sulphate were tested as prevention of DD in a 5-month study. Data were derived from 302 hind feet of Holstein and Estonian Red cows (no. of cows = 151) from a commercial dairy farm in Estonia. Altogether 168 hind feet were included in the acidified co

Vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia triggered by long-term social withdrawal and unbalanced diet in a Japanese middle-aged subject: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteomalacia is caused by an increase in the number of osteoids owing to mineralization failure. There are various causes of osteomalacia, such as hypophosphatemia due to excess production of fibroblast growth factor 23, vitamin D deficiency, insufficient vitamin D action, and renal tubular disorders. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old man with bone pain and gait disturbance was referred to our institution. At the age of 35, he developed atopic dermatitis. He had eyesight deterioration due to atopic cataracts when he was 37 years old. Subsequently, he stayed home all the time, and

When Foods Cause Itch: Clinical Characteristics, Pathophysiology, and Recommendations for Food-Induced Skin and Mucosal Pruritus.

Itch occurs in various dermatologic and systemic conditions. Many patients report that certain foods instigate itch, although there is limited published information in dermatology on food-induced pruritus. In addition, itch severity is rarely mentioned. Food can induce pruritus through either ingestion or direct contact with skin or mucosal membranes. The most common type of itch provoked by food is acute urticaria, often through the classical immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated pathway. Other mechanisms include non-IgE-mediated, mixed (IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated), T-cell-mediated, and noni

[Dermatologic manifestations of vitamin and mineral deficiency].

Vitamin and mineral deficiency can lead to a wide variety of clinical symptoms. The skin, as a frequent site of manifestation of these diseases, can be a decisive cue for diagnosis. Deficiency occurs when micronutrients are insufficiently supplied to the organism, intestinal absorption is disturbed, or there are genetic defects that favor a deficiency. Predisposing factors and common triggers for diseases associated with deficiency in our latitudes are alcoholism, autism, psychiatric illnesses, eating disorders, special forms of nutrition (e.g., veganism), medications, gastrointestinal illness

Exploring the prevalence and characteristics of adverse drug events among older adults in South Korea using a national health insurance database.

Background: Adverse drug events (ADEs) in the elderly frequently occur because of their multiple chronic diseases and complexity of drug therapy. To better understand adverse drug events, the prevalence and characteristics of adverse drug events in elderly South Korean patients were assessed. Methods: The National Health Insurance databases for 2015 and 2016 were used for the analysis. We included patients aged ≥65 years that had at least one claim with the diagnosis codes 'drug-induced,' 'poisoning by drug,' and 'vaccine-associated' each year for the base-case analysis. To minimize the undere

Age and eczema severity, but not family history, are major risk factors for peanut allergy in infancy.

BACKGROUND: Whether to screen high-risk groups before early peanut introduction is controversial. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the risk of peanut allergy (PA) before peanut introduction for infants with (1) moderate-severe eczema, (2) another food allergy (FA), and/or (3) a first-degree relative with peanut allergy (FH). METHODS: Infants aged 4 to 11 months with no history of peanut ingestion, testing, or reaction and at least 1 of the above risk factors received peanut skin prick test and, depending on skin prick test wheal size, oral food challenge or observed feeding. RESULTS: A tot

Neoplastic and inflammatory skin disorders and serum levels of polychlorinated biphenyls in a population living in a highly polluted area.

BACKGROUND: Although polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been classified as human carcinogens for their association with melanoma, few data are available for other skin lesions. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of skin disorders in a highly PCB polluted area in northern Italy, with locally produced food as the main source of human contamination, and evaluate the association between skin lesions and PCB serum levels, taking account of possible confounders. MATERIALS & METHODS: Thirty-three PCB congeners were quantitatively assessed and a total of 189 subjects were equally divided i

A pediatric case of food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis due to rice bran.

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) caused by fruits and vegetables is increasing in recent years, but rice-induced FDEIA is rarely reported. The mechanism of FDEIA is unclear, although percutaneous sensitization occurs in some cases. A 14-year-old adolescent came our hospital who had 6 episodes of unknown FDEIA occurring from age 13. He affected atopic dermatitis in infancy, and he had been polishing rice daily to help with housework, and also had occasionally begun to observe urticaria while bathing after eating rice from 5 years old. Antigen-specific immunoglobulin E antibod

Factors associated with the development of oral allergy syndrome: A retrospective questionnaire survey of Japanese university students.

BACKGROUND: Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is an IgE-mediated food allergy. Ingestion of causative antigens leads to the development of local symptoms such as numbness of the oral mucosa in most cases and anaphylaxis in a few cases. The prevalence of OAS including in healthy people has not been investigated. Thus, we conducted a questionnaire survey of Japanese university students. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2688 first-year students using a questionnaire survey in marksheet format and examined the epidemiological characteristics of OAS. RESULTS: Only 2.7% of students were

[Pellagra-originally described in the Austrian Empire 250 years ago became a fatal endemic in some provinces].

Pellagra is characterized by "dermatitis - diarrhea - dementia - death". Various causes were discussed over the course of two centuries. The initial presumption was that the sun caused changes in exposed areas of the body. The "Zeïsts" blamed the maize (corn), which forms the main constituent in the diet of poor peoples, for being an insufficient nutrient and thus causing the pellagra in such indigent populations. The "Toxikozeïsts", however, regarded toxins produced by innocuous bacteria and fungi in unripe or in ripe but badly stored maize or in maize flour or in poorly baked maize bread as

[EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SEVERITY OF SOLID FOOD PROTEIN-INDUCED ENTEROCOLITIS SYNDROME AND POST-EMETIC SERUM THYMUS AND ACTIVATION-REGULATED CHEMOKINE LEVELS].

BACKGROUND: We reported that post-emetic serum thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) levels may be a potential biomarker to diagnose solid food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). However, there are no reports on the relationship between FPIES severity and serum TARC levels. METHODS: The subjects were 13 cases of FPIES (hen's egg=10, Wheat=1, rice=1, short-neck clam=1) for a total of 22 events (7 emergency outpatient visits, 9 positive and 6 negative results of oral food challenge test). Serum TARC levels at 6 and 24 h after antigen ingestion were compared between the s

Fish consumption during pregnancy and risk of allergic diseases in the offspring: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although several studies have reported the beneficial effects of maternal fish consumption on allergy diseases in the offspring, the findings are conflicting. We summarized earlier data on the association between maternal fish intake and risk of allergy diseases in the offspring through a meta-analysis. A systematic literature search of relevant reports published in Medline/PubMed, ISI web of Science, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Google Scholar prior to February 2020 was conducted. All observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control or cohort) that examined the relationship between intake of matern

Immunogloboulin E-Mediated Food Sensitization in Children with Celiac Disease: A Single-Center Experience.

PURPOSE: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten proteins and is often characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms. Food allergy (FA) is an adverse immune sensitivity to ingested food proteins leading to inflammation in various organs including the gastrointestinal tract. The relationship between CD and FA remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and clinical relevance of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food sensitization in children with CD. METHODS: Fifty-nine children diagnosed with CD were review

Aquatic Antagonists: Sea Cucumbers (Holothuroidea).

Sea cucumbers are sausage-shaped aquatic creatures living on the ocean floors across the world. They are considered a food delicacy in many countries but also are known to have many beneficial pharmaceutical properties; however, sea cucumbers also contain a dangerous component called holothurin, which has been shown to have a negative impact on the health of both humans and other wildlife. In humans, exposure to holothurin can cause a painful irritant dermatitis, irritation of the mucous membranes, potential blindness, and, if ingested, even possible death. Treatment options include irrigation

Nutritional Intervention for a Korean Adolescent with Atopic Dermatitis: a Case Report.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease in children worldwide but can affect individuals of all ages. Patients and parents of pediatric patients tend to restrict too much food because they think this aggravates or causes AD. However, there is a risk of nutrient deficiency owing to a lack of balanced diet. Herein, nutritional counseling was conducted to improve the eating habits of a patient with AD, promote nutritionally balanced meals, and consequently observe changes in the severity of AD. This report discusses the case of a 15-year-old male patient with AD who did not r

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial measuring the effect of a dietetic food on dermatologic scoring and pruritus in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Canine atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common condition that often requires multimodal therapy. Including a diet in the multimodal management of AD may reduce medication doses, saving pet owners money and reducing side effects. The objective of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was to determine if a diet fortified in antioxidants, polyphenols, and omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the clinical signs of AD. Forty client-owned dogs with AD were enrolled in the study and assigned to either an enriched diet (diet B) or control diet (diet A) for 60-days. CADESI-4
