Delayed eczematous skin reaction as an adverse drug reaction to immunoglobulin infusions: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Pompholyx and eczematous reactions are known adverse reactions to intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) infusion, but little is known about their clinical characteristics, associated outcomes and management. OBJECTIVE: To describe IVIg-induced eczematous skin reactions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on cases of delayed skin reactions post-IVIg infusion notified to the French Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre from 1985 to 2020. RESULTS: A total of 27 patients were identified, of whom 85% were male. IVIg infusions were given in a neurological indication in 82% of cases.

Progression of Infective Dermatitis Associated with HTLV-1 to Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma-Case Report and Literature Review.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 is a retrovirus that may cause severe diseases such as infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 (IDH) and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). IDH is a chronic relapsing infected eczema of childhood, and ATL is a distinct type of peripheral T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, which is classified into the following types: smoldering, primary cutaneous tumoral, chronic, lymphoma, and acute. Progression of IDH to ATL during the course of IDH has been previously reported in 3 young patients, two of them from Bahia (Brazil). We present the case of a 22-year-old

An update on viral-induced cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. CME Part I.

Viral-induced cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are an uncommon group of lymphoproliferative disorders characterized by a viral infection of T and natural killer (NK) cells. This group of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas is more commonly encountered in Asians and Native Americans from Central and South America compared with Western populations. Viral-associated lymphoproliferative disorders include a spectrum of entities that range from nonneoplastic lesions, such as chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection and infective dermatitis to malignant diseases, such as extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, hydroa vac

Papulosquamous annular diseases.

Papulosquamous diseases represent a commonly encountered group of cutaneous disorders in dermatology. Lesions can present with papules and plaques in various configurations, including annular forms. Some of these disorders are expected to appear in annular configurations, such as pityriasis rosea and subcorneal pustular dermatosis. Others may either begin as or even progress to annular configurations, including psoriasis vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, and nummular dermatitis. We have reviewed common papulosquamous diseases that can present with annular lesions, which includes psoriasis vulga

Contact allergy to and allergic contact dermatitis from formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers: A clinical review and update.

This review aims to provide a clinically useful update regarding the role of formaldehyde (FA) and its five main releasers (FRs) quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bronopol) in contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis. These ubiquitous preservatives are still often present, and sometimes undeclared, in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, household detergents, and chemical (industrial) products. In Europe, the use of free FA and quaternium-15 in cosmetics is forbidden and contact allergy rates have been fou

Integrative and Multidisciplinary Care for People Living With Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus in Bahia, Brazil: 20 Years of Experience.

Brazil is home to the highest absolute number of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)-infected individuals worldwide; the city of Salvador, Bahia, has the highest prevalence of HTLV-1 infection in Brazil. Due to the complex nature of several diseases associated with this retrovirus, a multidisciplinary health care approach is necessary to care for people living with HTLV-1. The Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health's Integrative Multidisciplinary HTLV Center (CHTLV) has been providing support to people living with HTLV and their families since 2002, striving to ensure physical

Tree-based data mining for safety assessment of first COVID-19 booster doses in the Vaccine Safety Datalink.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) has been performing safety surveillance for COVID-19 vaccines since their earliest authorization in the United States. Complementing its real-time surveillance for pre-specified health outcomes using pre-specified risk intervals, the VSD conducts tree-based data-mining to look for clustering of a broad range of health outcomes after COVID-19 vaccination. This study's objective was to use this untargeted, hypothesis-generating approach to assess the safety of first booster doses of Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162

An update on Epstein-Barr virus-and human T-lymphotropic virus type-1-induced cutaneous manifestations. CME Part II.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus that infects 90% of the human population, is responsible for certain cutaneous lymphomas (extranodal NK/T-cell lymhoma, hydroa vacciniforme lymphoproliferative disorder, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, others), and can be associated with a variety of cutaneous manifestations (eg, infectious mononucleosis, severe mosquito bite allergy, chronic active EBV disease, Gianotti-Crosti syndrome). EBV-related skin disorders are frequent in certain populations (South and Cental America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania) and can be diagnostically challenging. The human T

Systemic interventions for treatment of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and SJS/TEN overlap syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and SJS/TEN overlap syndrome are rare, severe cutaneous adverse reactions usually triggered by medications. In addition to tertiary-level supportive care, various systemic therapies have been used including glucocorticoids, intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIGs), cyclosporin, N-acetylcysteine, thalidomide, infliximab, etanercept, and plasmapheresis. There is an unmet need to understand the efficacy of these interventions. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of systemic therapies (medicines delivered orally, intramuscular

Palmo-plantar hyperkeratosis associated with HTLV-1 infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar hyperkeratosis is a cutaneous manifestation that had not been clearly associated with infection by the human T-cell lymphotropic virus, which is a retrovirus that in most cases does not develop clinical pathologies and its symptoms may be undetected. The skin is one of the most affected organs, however until now only seborrheic dermatitis, xerosis/ichthyosis and infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 have been described as cutaneous clinical manifestations of this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 36-year-old male patient with serologically doc

Case Report: Atypical Cutaneous Presentation of Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1-Related Adult T-cell Lymphoma.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus endemic in many parts of the world. Because of migration, cases of HTLV-1 in non-HTLV-1 endemic countries have been increasingly reported. Clinical presentation of HTLV-1 infection is highly variable, with a significant risk of diagnostic delays. Skin can be the first site affected by HTLV-1-related manifestations such as cutaneous involvement of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1. A 32-year-old Nigerian man was admitted to the infectious disease department for high fever, astheni
