Epidemiology of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) in people living with HTLV-1: A 30-year study in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATL) is caused by human T-leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1). Over 10 million people are infected worldwide, but only up to 5% develop ATL. HTLV-1 infection is endemic in Peru; however, there are currently no reports focusing on the epidemiological characteristics of Peruvian individuals with ATL. METHODS: Data from the HTLV-1 Unit registry covering the period from June 1992 to November 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical report forms and histopathology records from national referral cancer centers were reviewed. Descriptive statistics were use

Investigating the complex roles of immunocyte phenotypes in the pathogenesis of dermatitis: a causal inference Mendelian randomization analysis.

The etiology of dermatitis involves complex interactions between immune cells, genetics, and environmental factors. While immunocyte phenotypes have been linked to various forms of dermatitis, their causal role remains unclear. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal effects between 731 immunocyte phenotypes and four types of dermatitis: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, infective dermatitis, and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Genetic variants were used as instrumental variables, and the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was employed to asse

Mangrove afforestation as an ecological control of invasive Spartina alterniflora affects rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community in a subtropical tidal estuarine wetland.

BACKGROUND: The planting of mangroves is extensively used to control the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in coastal wetlands. Different plant species release diverse sets of small organic compounds that affect rhizosphere conditions and support high levels of microbial activity. The root-associated microbial community is crucial for plant health and soil nutrient cycling, and for maintaining the stability of the wetland ecosystem. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was used to assess the structure and function of the soil bacterial communities in mudflat soil and in the rhizosphere soil

A Typical Case of Atypical Disease: "Three Noes" Infective Endocarditis.

Recognizing typical presentations of atypical cases is essential to reduce diagnostic errors and achieve better diagnoses. To better understand this, we report a typical case of "three noes" infective endocarditis (no left-sided, no intravenous drug use, and no intracardiac devices) with some different characteristics from well-known infective endocarditis. A 16-year-old boy with a history of atopic dermatitis presented with a one-month history of intermittent fever and shaking chills. The patient became afebrile with oral antibiotics, and initial investigations did not detect any evidence of

Infective dermatitis associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1, an underdiagnosed disease.

Infective dermatitis associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) (IDH) is a severe form of chronically infected eczema occurring in early childhood, although very rarely cases have been reported in adults. Most of the cases are from Jamaica and Brazil and occur in individuals with low socioeconomic status. IDH is always associated with refractory Staphylococcus aureus or beta-hemolytic Streptococcus infection of the skin and nasal vestibules. Patients with IDH may develop other even more severe HTLV-1-associated diseases, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spasti

Targeting NMDA receptor in Alzheimer's disease: identifying novel inhibitors using computational approaches.

The glutamate-gated ion channels known as N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are important for both normal and pathological brain function. Subunit-selective antagonists have high therapeutic promise since many pathological conditions involve NMDAR over activation, although few clinical successes have been reported. Allosteric inhibitors of GluN2B-containing receptors are among the most potential NMDAR targeting drugs. Since the discovery of ifenprodil, a variety of GluN2B-selective compounds have been discovered, each with remarkably unique structural motifs. These results expand the all

Detection of Naganishia albida Yeasts in Dermatological Patients.

The yeasts Cryptococcus albidus (Naganishia albida) usually occur on natural substrates and rarely are the etiological factor of different mycoses. More than a half of mycosis cases described in the literature were reported during the period from 2004 to 2021. In this regard, evaluation of yeast sensitivity to antimycotic drugs is as important as their identification. In the present study, two yeast isolates from the skin of female patients (age 7 and 74 years) with infective dermatitis (ICD-10-CM Code L30.3) were studied. Common identification of the isolates, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and

Signs and symptoms of human T-lymphotropic virus 1 and 2 infections in paediatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of signs and symptoms of HTLV-1 and 2 infection in paediatric patients. METHODS: We included cohort, case-control and descriptive observational studies that reported the prevalence of signs and symptoms of HTLV-1 and 2 infections in paediatric patients. Searches were performed in MEDLINE® (Ovid), EMBASE and LILACS from inception to the present, and we saturated information with other sources of published and unpublished literature. We decided not to perform meta-analysis according to heterogeneity. RESULTS: A total of eight studies met the inclusion cri

A Textbook Case of Human T-lymphotropic Virus-1 (HTLV-1)-Induced Adult T-cell Leukemia Treated With Cyclophosphamide, Hydroxydaunorubicin, Oncovin, and Prednisone/Prednisolone (CHOP).

Human T-lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-I) is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus of the Retroviridae family. The virus causes two well-recognized disease associations: adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM), also known as tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). We report a case of HTLV-1-induced adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia in a 45-year-old female who presented with complaints of swelling on the right side of her neck and rash on her upper and lower extremities and abdomen. The patient also had a history of strongyloidiasis infection and Crohn's disease. She

Progression of Infective Dermatitis Associated with HTLV-1 to Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma-Case Report and Literature Review.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 is a retrovirus that may cause severe diseases such as infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 (IDH) and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). IDH is a chronic relapsing infected eczema of childhood, and ATL is a distinct type of peripheral T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, which is classified into the following types: smoldering, primary cutaneous tumoral, chronic, lymphoma, and acute. Progression of IDH to ATL during the course of IDH has been previously reported in 3 young patients, two of them from Bahia (Brazil). We present the case of a 22-year-old

An update on viral-induced cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. CME Part I.

Viral-induced cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are an uncommon group of lymphoproliferative disorders characterized by a viral infection of T and natural killer (NK) cells. This group of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas is more commonly encountered in Asians and Native Americans from Central and South America compared with Western populations. Viral-associated lymphoproliferative disorders include a spectrum of entities that range from nonneoplastic lesions, such as chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection and infective dermatitis to malignant diseases, such as extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, hydroa vac

Integrative and Multidisciplinary Care for People Living With Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus in Bahia, Brazil: 20 Years of Experience.

Brazil is home to the highest absolute number of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1)-infected individuals worldwide; the city of Salvador, Bahia, has the highest prevalence of HTLV-1 infection in Brazil. Due to the complex nature of several diseases associated with this retrovirus, a multidisciplinary health care approach is necessary to care for people living with HTLV-1. The Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health's Integrative Multidisciplinary HTLV Center (CHTLV) has been providing support to people living with HTLV and their families since 2002, striving to ensure physical

An update on Epstein-Barr virus-and human T-lymphotropic virus type-1-induced cutaneous manifestations. CME Part II.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus that infects 90% of the human population, is responsible for certain cutaneous lymphomas (extranodal NK/T-cell lymhoma, hydroa vacciniforme lymphoproliferative disorder, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, others), and can be associated with a variety of cutaneous manifestations (eg, infectious mononucleosis, severe mosquito bite allergy, chronic active EBV disease, Gianotti-Crosti syndrome). EBV-related skin disorders are frequent in certain populations (South and Cental America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania) and can be diagnostically challenging. The human T

Case Report: Atypical Cutaneous Presentation of Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1-Related Adult T-cell Lymphoma.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus endemic in many parts of the world. Because of migration, cases of HTLV-1 in non-HTLV-1 endemic countries have been increasingly reported. Clinical presentation of HTLV-1 infection is highly variable, with a significant risk of diagnostic delays. Skin can be the first site affected by HTLV-1-related manifestations such as cutaneous involvement of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1. A 32-year-old Nigerian man was admitted to the infectious disease department for high fever, astheni

[Brazilian Protocol for Sexually Transmitted Infections 2020: human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infection].

This manuscript is related to the chapter about human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) that is part of the Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines for Comprehensive Care for People with Sexually Transmitted Infections, published by the Brazilian Health Ministry. HTLV-1/2 infection is a worldwide public health problem and Brazil has the largest number of individuals living with the virus. HTLV-1 causes a variety of clinical manifestations of a neoplastic nature, such as adult leukemia/T-cell lymphoma, and also of an inflammatory nature, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy, as well as othe

Molecular characterization of HTLV-1 genomic region hbz from patients with different clinical conditions.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is associated with severe pathologies, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATLL), and infective dermatitis associated with the HTLV-1 (IDH). Interestingly, HTLV-1 infection does not necessarily imply the development of pathological processes and it is unknown why some patients remain asymptomatic carriers (AC). Despite some mutations in the HTLV-1 genome appear to influence the outcome of HTLV-1, there are few studies that characterize molecularly the hbz region. This st
