This article addresses the Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV). This subject comprises the Clinical Protocol and Therapeutic Guidelines for Comprehensive Care for People with Sexually Transmitted Infections, published by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. HTLV-1/2 infection is a public health problem globally, and Brazil has the largest number of individuals living with the virus. HTLV-1 causes several clinical manifestations of neoplasm (adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma) and inflammatory nature, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy and other manifestations such as uveitis, arthritis, and infective

HTLV-1, the first human oncogenic retrovirus, is a type C retrovirus that belongs to the Deltaretrovirus genus. The HTLV-1 genome has 8.5 kbp length, and consists of major genes such as gag, pol, pro, env, and pX region. This retrovirus is considered as one of the most deadly infectious agent for peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The infection of HTLV-1 can lead to dangerous complications, such as infective dermatitis (ID), uveitis, arthritis, lymphadenitis, arthropathies, Sjögren's Syndrome (SS), and particularly HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) or

BACKGROUND: Infective dermatitis associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), (IDH), is a chronic eczema occurring in HTLV-1 infected children. Rare cases of adulthood IDH have been reported and no study until now aimed to compare juvenile and adulthood IDH.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Twelve cases of adulthood IDH followed for a mean time of 7.5 years were analyzed according to clinicopathological and molecular aspects, comparing them to juvenile IDH cases. Diagnosis was based on the modified major criteria used for juvenile IDH. Proviral load (PVL) assessment was per

Infectious dermatitis is a cutaneous manifestation of HTLV-1 infection. Although initially described in children in Jamaica, it is well documented that the disease can also present in adults. The clinical picture is of an oozing dermatitis affecting the scalp, face, retroauricular areas, the neck, and intertrigious areas, such as the axilla and groin. Histologically it has two patterns: a superficial perivascular dermatitis or a lichenoid dermatitis. The epidermal hyperplasia may mimic psoriasis. An important differential diagnosis is with mycosis fungoides, with epidermotropism, alignment of

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive peripheral T-cell lymphoma caused by the human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1). The skin is affected in approximately half of ATLL patients, and it may be the first manifestation of the disease. The skin lesions of ATLL are polymorphous, and depending on the type of skin eruption, it is possible to predict the prognosis of the disease. Besides specific skin lesions, other non-specific lesions and increased risk of cutaneous and systemic infections are observed. In this article, we describe the different skin lesions of ATLL patients (

Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) causes lifelong infection. At least 5-10 million individuals worldwide are currently living with HTLV-1. Studies of regional variation are required to better understand the contribution of MTCT to the global burden of infection. Although most infected individuals remain asymptomatic ∼10% develop high morbidity, high mortality disease. Infection early in life is associated with a higher risk of disease development. Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), which is caused by HTLV-1 and has a median survival of 8 months is

INTRODUCTION: Infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 (IDH) is a recurrent eczema which affects children vertically infected with HTLV-1. In Bahia, Brazil, we recently reported that 47% of IDH patients also develop juvenile HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a progressive disabling disorder which is typically reported in adult HTLV-1 carriers. IDH may also predispose to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, a neoplasm associated with HTLV-1. The factors relating to the development of HTLV-1-associated juvenile diseases have not yet been defined. HTLV-1 proviral

The HTLV-1 is the first human retrovirus and is associated with several clinical syndromes, however, the pathogenesis of these clinical manifestations is still not fully understood. Furthermore, there are few complete genomes publicly available, about 0.12 complete genomes per 10,000 infected individuals and the databases have a major deficiency of sequences information. This study generated and characterized 31 HTLV-1 complete genomes sequences derived from individuals with Tropical Spastic Paraparesis/HTLV-1-Associated Myelopathy (TSP/HAM), Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), infective der

INTRODUCTION: Individuals infected with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) commonly present skin lesions, which may be a warning sign for the diagnosis of infection. This study describes the most prevalent skin manifestations in HTLV carriers attended at the clinic of Núcleo de Medicina Tropical (NMT) of the Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) in Belém, Pará, Brazil.
METHODS: This is a study of a series of cases of patients infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) treated at NMT UFPA between 1999 and 2016. A descriptive analysis of data was appli

Infective dermatitis (ID) associated with Human T-cell leukemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is a rare form of severe superinfected eczema seen mostly in the Caribbean islands and Latin America. Although rapid response to antibiotic treatment is observed, patients should be monitored for development of complications associated with this retroviral infection, including T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Infective dermatitis is rarely seen in the United States and therefore may be under-recognized by physicians unfamiliar with this c

UNLABELLED: The Serratia marcescens is a Gram-negative bacterium from the Enterobacteriaceae family. Recently, S. marcescens have evolved to become a versatile and opportunistic pathogen. Furthermore, this bacterium is also a multi-drug resistant pathogen exhibiting Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL) activity. This bacterium is highly associated with infections in healthcare settings and even leads to death. Hence, an advanced approach based on non-protein coding RNA (npcRNA) of S. marcescens was considered in this study to understand its regulatory roles in virulence, pathogenesis, and

Infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 (IDH) is the main cutaneous marker of HTLV-1 infection. This disease occurs primarily in children and should be differentiated from other eczemas, especially from atopic dermatitis. The largest series of IDH are from Jamaica and Brazil. There are an estimated 15 to 20 million infected people in the world, and Brazil is one of the endemic regions. Studies suggest that IDH in children may be a marker for the development of T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) or myelopathy associated with HTLV-1/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM / TSP) in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: An association between blood stream infections (BSI) and HTLV-1 seropositivity in Indigenous Australians might result from HTLV-1 mediated inflammation and parasite coinfections that provide portals of entry for bacteria.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether BSI risk increases with HTLV-1c proviral load (PVL) and to identify the pathogens responsible in the context of HTLV-1 related conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: Indigenous adults admitted to Alice Springs Hospital, central Australia, were recruited as cases or controls according to whether they had a BSI. Clinical data were extracted fro

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that produces a persistent infection. Two transmission routes (from mother to child and via sexual intercourse) favor familial clustering of HTLV-1. It is yet unknown why most HTLV-1 carriers remain asymptomatic while about 10% of them develop complications. HTLV-1 associated diseases were originally described as sporadic entities, but familial presentations have been reported. To explore what is known about family aggregation of HTLV-1-associated diseases we undertook a systematic review. We aimed at answering whether, when, and where fami

BACKGROUND: Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-1-associated infective dermatitis (ID) is a rare severe chronic eczema, considered as a harbinger for the development of cutaneous adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and/or HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). The pathogenesis of ID remains unclear. High numbers of peripheral blood CD4+ CD25+ FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been reported in ATLL and HAM/TSP.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the status of Tregs, unknown to date, and the histopathological features of ID.
METHODS: We studied 16 skin biopsies from
