Naegleria fowleri is a ubiquitous free-living amoeba that causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. As a part of the innate immune response at the mucosal level, the proteins lactoferrin (Lf) and lysozyme (Lz) are secreted and eliminate various microorganisms. We demonstrate that N. fowleri survives the individual and combined effects of bovine milk Lf (bLf) and chicken egg Lz (cLz). Moreover, amoebic proliferation was not altered, even at 24 h of co-incubation with each protein. Trophozoites' ultrastructure was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy, and these proteins did not sig

Liver abscess (LA) is a significant health concern worldwide, particularly in tropical regions such as India, and is usually pyogenic or amoebic in origin. In rare cases it can be caused by parasites. We present two children with difficult-to-treat LAs, revealing underlying parasitic infections as the causative agents, implicated by eosinophilia, elevated immunoglobulin-E levels and exposure to domestic animals. In the first case, disseminated echinococcosis was diagnosed through imaging, serology and histopathology. The second case showed a relationship between LAs and Toxocara infection, evi

Amebic liver abscesses (ALAs), one of the most common extraintestinal manifestations of invasive amebiasis, pose diagnostic challenges due to their various clinical presentations and difficulty in distinguishing them from pyogenic abscesses. This case presentation highlights the intricacy of determining the source of an unusually large liver abscess that had an even rare occurrence of a coinciding pulmonary embolus without any evidence of a deep vein thrombosis. This unusual combination underscores the challenges in identifying and managing atypical cases of ALA and emphasizes the need for mor

The parasite Entamoeba histolytica is the cause of amoebic dysentery and liver abscess in humans. On the protozoan cell surface, a variety of glycosylated molecules are involved in the interaction with the environment, such as attachment to the colonic mucus. One of these molecules is the lipopeptidophosphoglycan (LPPG), a complex surface component with antigenic properties. Its structure is only partly known, it is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked glycoprotein with a large amount of O-glycosylation. To date, the sequence of a core protein has not been identified. In this study, we

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are isolated from the hospital environments and known as Trojan horses for medical essential microorganisms. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and the presence of FLA and two critical agents of nosocomial infections, in the hospital wards. Sixty samples were collected from four communities and cultured onto non-nutrient agar (NNA). After total DNA extraction, FLA were characterized using PCR and sequencing. The presence of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated using real-time and conventional PCR, respectively. Acanthamoeba sp. was char

Amoebic liver abscess is a severe and potentially life-threatening infection requiring prompt diagnosis and early targeted treatment. Diagnosis is challenging because conventional diagnostic methods such as light microscopy and serology are often unreliable. Molecular techniques have emerged as an additional diagnostic tool, suddenly becoming the new diagnostic reference standard. More recently, commercial multiplex PCR panels, including FilmArray, have been introduced, which permit the simultaneous detection of several enteric pathogens including Entamoeba histolytica in stool samples. We rep

Entamoeba histolytica is a pathogenic protozoan endemic to Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. However, with increased travel and emigration, it is becoming a common parasitic infection leading to many worldwide deaths. We present a case of a young Hispanic male immigrant with an amebic liver abscess. This case report highlights the complexities of diagnosing and treating E. histolytica infection.

Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is still a common problem in the tropical world, where it affects over three-quarters of patients with liver abscess. It is caused by an anaerobic protozoan Entamoeba hystolytica, which primarily colonises the cecum. It is a non-suppurative infection of the liver consisting primarily of dead hepatocytes and cellular debris. People of the male gender, during their reproductive years, are most prone to ALA, and this appears to be due to a poorly mounted immune response linked to serum testosterone levels. ALA is more common in the right lobe of the liver, is strongly a

Hepatic abscesses are divided into bacterial and amoebic types. Although the prognosis of bacterial liver abscesses has improved owing to progress in drainage techniques and antimicrobial agents, poor outcomes remain common. While there have been some reports of amoebic liver abscesses complicated by thrombosis, bacterial liver abscesses and subsequent thrombus in the right atrium are very rare. We herein report the case of an 82-year-old man. He had suffered acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis 10 months previously, and bile culture yielded Enterococcus faecalis. In the present case, a r

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) and hepatitis A are common in developing countries. As there is an overlap of clinical features, a diagnosis of dual infection can be missed. Here, we present the case of a five-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice diagnosed as a complicated liver abscess with concurrent hepatitis A. To our knowledge, this is the first case where a PLA co-existed with hepatitis A. Simultaneous infection should be considered when a patient with liver abscess presents with jaundice, especially in areas where both diseases are endemic. Early diagnosis o

The development of amoebic liver abscess (ALA) leads to liver necrosis, accompanied by an exacerbated inflammatory response and the formation of multiple granulomas. Adequate management of the infection through the administration of treatment and the timely response of the organ to the damage allows the injury to heal with optimal regeneration without leaving scar tissue, which does not occur in other types of damage such as viral hepatitis that may conducts to fibrosis or cirrhosis. The Hedgehog signaling pathway (Hh) is crucial in the embryonic stage, while in adults it is usually reactivate

Acanthamoeba genus can affect humans with diseases such as granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE), a highly lethal neuroinfection. Several aspects of the disease still need to be elucidated. Animal models of GAE have advanced our knowledge of the disease. This work tested Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) as an animal model of GAE. For this, 32 animals were infected with 1 × 106A. castellanii trophozoites of the T4 genotype. Ameba recovery tests were carried out using agar plates, vascular extravasation assays, behavioral tests, and histopathological technique with H/E staining. Data we
