INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Amoeboma is a pseudotumoral presentation of amebiasis which is a parasitic infection caused by entamoeba histolytica. Its location in the gallbladder is extremely rare. Indeed, only one other case was found in the literature. Therefore, we present this case report on managing a gallbladder amoeboma mimicking a cholangiocarcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old presenting for consultation for biliary colic that has been developing for 4 months without associated signs. MRI and thoraco-abdominal CT concluded to a cholangiocarcinoma of the gallbladder extended to t

Aim: CNS infections due to parasites often prove fatal. In part, this is due to inefficacy of drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier. Methods: Here, we tested intranasal and intravenous route and compared adverse effects of Amphotericin B administration, through blood biochemistry, liver, kidney and brain histopathological evidence of toxicities in vivo post-administration. Results: It was observed that intranasal route limits the adverse side effects of Amphotericin B, in contrast to intravenous route. Conclusion: As parasites such as Naegleria fowleri exhibit unequivocal affinity toward the

Multinucleated Giant Cells (MGCs) are specialized cells that develop from the fusion of multiple cells, and their presence is commonly observed in human cells during various infections. However, MGC formation is not restricted to infections alone but can also occur through different mechanisms, such as endoreplication and abortive cell cycle. These processes lead to the formation of polyploid cells, eventually resulting in the formation of MGCs. In Entamoeba, a protozoan parasite that causes amoebic dysentery and liver abscesses in humans, the formation of MGCs is a unique phenomenon and not b

BACKGROUND: The most common source of pyogenic liver abscess is biliary tract infection. Other less common routes include the spread of bacteria from distant foci. However, direct extension of a perinephric infection focus to the liver is extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a non-diabetic, immunocompetent, 29-year-old woman of mixed race ancestry with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections who was referred to our hospital because of an ultrasound-detected liver abscess. She was initially treated with metronidazole for 20 days at the referring institution for suspected amebic

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) and pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) are the most common causes of liver abscess in developing and developed countries, respectively. Although incidence of liver abscess is low, but mortality is high amongst the patients due to delayed diagnosis. The study was done to find out the prevalence of amoebic and PLA among patients of liver abscess. The clinical, personal, and demographical details were also evaluated to find out the risk factor(s) associated with ALA and PLA, respectively.
METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted to find the pr

Amoebic liver abscess is one frequently encountered intra-abdominal infection, caused by Entamoeba histolytica and has various abdominal and thoracic life-threatening complications. Herein, describe a case of a 30-year-old female, who suffered from multiple amoebic liver abscesses and presented with massive right-sided pleural effusion. She was managed with recommended antibiotics and pigtail catheter for liver abscess and an intercostal drainage tube for massive pleural effusion. However, postintercostal drainage, her chest X-ray demonstrated a right mediastinal shadow, which was confirmed as

Entamoeba histolytica is an enteric tissue-invasive protozoan parasite causing amoebic colitis and liver abscesses in humans. Amoebic contact with host cells activates intracellular signaling pathways that lead to host cell death via generation of caspase-3, calpain, Ca2+ elevation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). We previously reported that various NADPH oxidases (NOXs) are responsible for ROS-dependent death of various host cells induced by amoeba. In the present study, we investigated the specific NOX isoform involved in ROS-dependent death of hepatocytes induced by amoebas. Co-incubatio

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis, an infectious disease caused by the parasitic protozoan E. histolytica, is easily misdiagnosed due to its declining incidence and atypical symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male presented to the hospital with dyspnea and inability to lie flat. Imaging studies indicated a large amount of pleural effusion on the right side and multiple huge cysts in the liver. The patient underwent liver tumor resection surgery at another hospital due to suspected malignancy, but no evidence of relevant malignant tumors was found in the pathological examination. Subsequently, we

An 18-year-old male developed a huge liver abscess with severe anemia over the course of 2 weeks. Abdominal contrast enhanced computed tomography showed ruptured huge liver abscess in the right liver lobe with signs of active hemorrhage (contrast extravasation). Serology examination confirmed amoeba as the suspected pathogen of cause. Angiography was performed followed by transcatheter arterial embolization to localize and control the hemorrhage. Embolization using a combination of polyvinyl alcohol and gelfoam successfully controlled the active hemorrhage. Exploratory laparotomy was performed

Among the parasitic diseases, amoebic liver abscess (ALA) ranks second to malaria in terms of mortality. Due to the poor sensitivity of conventional diagnostic methods, there is a need for the development of effective and rapid diagnostic methods for ALA. Thus, the purpose of this work was to develop a real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay specific to Entamoeba histolytica. Further, we compared the performance of real-time LAMP with conventional and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) targeting 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S SSU rRNA) gene of E. histolytica in patients with

Liver abscess is a common disease, however, it is a rare cause of venous thrombosis. The incidence of amoebic and pyogenic liver abscess in developing countries is high, however, the occurrence of inferior vena cava thrombosis secondary to liver abscess is a very rare and life-threatening complication. Computed tomography (CT) scan is an ideal investigation tool for diagnosing the various complications associated with liver abscess. Here we describe 3 cases of liver abscess in patients who developed a rare vascular complication of inferior vena cava. Liver abscesses should be considered as a r

Recently, two genes involved in amoebic liver abscess formation in a mouse model were identified by their differential expression of non-pathogenic (A1np) and pathogenic (B2p) clones of the Entamoeba histolytica isolate HM:1-IMSS. While overexpression of a gene encoding the metallopeptidase EhMP8-2 reduces the virulence of the pathogenic clone B2p, overexpression of the gene ehi_127670 (ehhp127), encoding a hypothetical protein, increases the virulence of the non-pathogenic clone A1np, while silencing this gene in the pathogenic B2p reduces virulence. To understand the role of both molecules i

BACKGROUND: Amebic liver abscess (ALA), caused by an extraintestinal invasion of the virulent protozoan Entamoeba histolytica, is important among parasitic causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in the tropics. Clinical symptoms, medical-imaging abnormalities of the liver and serological tests are normally made for supportive diagnosis. Serum-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been conventionally used for diagnosing ALA but is time-consuming and sophisticated equipment is required. Therefore, we sought to develop a new and rapid innovative point-of-care immunochromatogr

Amebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is the most common extraintestinal complication of amebiasis. In animal models of ALA, neutrophils have been shown to be the first cells to come into contact with Entamoeba histolytica during the initial phase of ALA. One of the multiple mechanisms by which neutrophils exhibit amebicidal activity is through reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the enzyme NADPH oxidase (NOX2), which generates and transports electrons to subsequently reduce molecular oxygen into superoxide anion. Previous reports have s
