Prevalence, tropism, and activity of cutavirus in circulating blood lymphocytes, stool, and skin biopsy specimens of patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and parapsoriasis en plaques.

A significant association has been established between a newly emerging human parvovirus, cutavirus (CuV), and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma/mycosis fungoides (CTCL/MF) and its precursor parapsoriasis en plaques (PP). CTCL is a heterogeneous group of skin malignancies of T cells, the cause of which remains unknown. This study aimed to determine the activity, spread, and cell tropism of the skin-persistent CuV. CuV DNA was detected in both skin biopsies (6/20, 30%) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) (4/29, 13.8%) from 49 CTCL/MF or PP patients, while none from 33 patients with any other

Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris in an Atopic Dermatitis Patient: A Case Report.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare, chronic, inflammatory papulosquamous skin disease. Here, we report a case of a 43-year-old female with a known history of atopic dermatitis, bronchiectasis, and goiter who presented with a six-month history of persistent itchy skin lesions on her extremities. A skin examination revealed multiple diffuse, well-defined, fine, scaly erythematous patches with areas of spared skin over all four extremities, along with palmoplantar keratoderma. The trunk was spared. The differential diagnosis included atopic eczema, pityriasis rubra pilaris, dermatomyositis,

Interesting Mucocutaneous Manifestations in COVID-19 Infection or Vaccination Confirmed by Histopathology: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Mucocutaneous complications or adverse events due to SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination have been well delineated in the literature, respectively. Most eruptions are considered mild and self-limiting; however, for the atypical cases with a tentative clinical diagnosis, performing a biopsy and histopathological assessment is pivotal to confirm the diagnosis and subsequently prescribe a more tailored treatment. Despite the diverse reporting of such incidents globally, most studies restrict the rate of biopsied cases to less than 15%. CASE PRESENTATIONS: This case series elucidate

Atypical plaque psoriasis: a clinicopathological study of 20 cases.

BACKGROUND: Plaque psoriasis is relatively straightforward to identify. When diagnostic concerns arise in atypical cases, a biopsy is needed. It is widely accepted that the Munro microabscess and the spongiform pustule of Kogoj are diagnostic pathological features. However, the diagnostic dilemma is likely to arise in cases without these specific pathological changes and typical clinical features. This study aimed to investigate clinical and pathological clues in distinguishing atypical plaque psoriasis from its mimics. METHODS: We evaluated the clinicopathological features of 20 cases of aty

Dermoscopy as a diagnostic aid in pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta.

Diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) is based on the characteristic pattern of lesions in different stages of development, ranging from erythematous maculopapules to papules with a crusted and/or necrotic centre. However, it may raise the differential diagnosis with other entities. It is therefore not uncommon to have to perform skin biopsies to reach a diagnosis, including in infants. In this study, we report the cases of three patients with PLEVA, highlighting the correlations between the clinical, dermoscopic and histological features. Observation of the dermat

Efficacy and safety of excimer light (308 nm) in the treatment of pityriasis lichenoides chronica.

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis lichenoides chronica is the chronic end of the spectrum of pityriasis lichenoides which have several forms of papulosuamous conditions. Several treatments obtained complete clearance of the condition including phototherapy and specifically narrow band ultraviolet B. The Excimer light 308 is a monochromatic light that acts within the ultraviolet B wavelength and used as a targeted phototherapy in several skin conditions. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with histopathologically diagnosed pityriasis lichenoides chronica underwent treatment with biweekly sessions of excimer

Rapid recovery in a child with febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease following intravenous immunoglobulin administration.

Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD), a lymphocyte-mediated inflammatory skin disorder, is considered a severe variant of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta that can lead to a fatal outcome if not managed in a timely fashion. Children with FUMHD can have systemic complications involving various organs. The scarcity of reported cases and the absence of well-designed studies or randomized clinical trials to evaluate different therapeutic modalities pose a major challenge in treating this potentially life-threatening disorder. We report a five-year-old child with FUMH

A clinical case of pityriasis lichenoides chronica presenting with palpable purpura after streptococcal infection.

Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare inflammatory skin condition presenting with diffuse red-brown papules with evolution polymorphism and mica-like crust on older skin lesions. We present a 60-year-old female patient with pityriasis lichenoides chronica that manifested ten days after streptococcal pharyngitis. Initially, palpable purpura appeared on the lower extremities and later, erythematous-squamous papules and plaques appeared at the site of the palpable purpura and on the upper limbs and trunk. The patient had no history of hematological malignancy, viral hepatitis, kidney involvement, syst

Utility of IL-36 immunostaining in distinguishing psoriasis from pityriasis rosea and pityriasis lichenoides.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease driven by upregulation of cytokines in the Th17 pathway, including interleukin-36 (IL-36). Previous studies have highlighted the utility of IL-36 immunostaining for psoriasis compared to spongiotic dermatitis and other psoriasiform dermatoses; however, no study has examined the role of IL-36 staining in distinguishing psoriasis from pityriasis rosea (PR) and pityriasis lichenoides (PL), known histologic mimickers of psoriasis. METHODS: We compared the immunostaining pattern of IL-36 for 21 PR cases, 22 PL cases, and 10 psoriasis cases. We

A case report of febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease.

BACKGROUND: Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD) is a rare and severe variant of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta, characterized by a rapid onset of painful, necrotic skin lesions and systemic symptoms. The diagnosis of FUMHD is complex, hinging on the clinical presentation, histopathological findings, and exclusion of other severe dermatoses. The key diagnostic criteria include sudden development of ulceronecrotic papules and plaques, fever, and evidence of systemic disease. Due to the rarity of FUMHD, there is no consensus on optimal treatment, reflecting a sig

What is pityriasis lichenoides?

Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) is an uncommon skin rash. PL has two main forms: Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA): this "acute" (fast) form comes on quickly. Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC): this "chronic" (long) form often develops slowly and lasts longer.

Pityriasis Lichenoides Chronica-Like Mycosis Fungoides: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a neoplasm of the immune system. It is a cutaneous lymphoma originating in the peripheral epidermotropic T-cells, specifically the memory T-cells (CD45RO+). The etiology of MF is indefinite, but various factors, such as genetic and epigenetic abnormalities, environmental and occupational exposure to chemicals, infections, and cytokines (interleukin [IL]-2, IL-4, etc.), play a vital role. Pityriasis lichenoides (PL), such as MF, is a rare subtype that is presented with skin lesions similar to that of PL.

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis leading to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia with monocytic differentiation: A case report and literature review.

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis (CHP) is associated with a number of systemic conditions and is characterized by the presence of benign phagocytic histiocytes ("bean bag cells"), including phagocytosed erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. We describe a case of a 72-year-old female who presented with a papular eruption that clinically mimicked pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA). Given that her skin biopsy had multiple features concerning PLEVA, this diagnosis was classified as a superficial pityriasis lichenoides-like variant of CHP. The histopathologic presence of cy

Immunophenotyping and viral studies in pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta lesions.

BACKGROUND: The underlying pathogenesis of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) remains unclear, although immunologic injury and viral etiology have been suggested. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and expand the immunophenotype of PLEVA and to search for possible viral pathogens. METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens of 20 patients with PLEVA and 9 patients with common inflammatory dermatoses (ID) were studied for immunophenotyping and for human herpesvirus (HHV) 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus (CMV), HHV-8, parvovirus B19, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) immunohistochemistry. Dermatoscopic Characteristics, Lesional Capillaroscopic Features, and Histopathological Correlation of Small Plaque Parapsoriasis and Mycosis Fungoides.

INTRODUCTION: Dermatoscopy is a frequently used non-invasive diagnostic procedure. OBJECTIVES: Considering that mycosis fungoides (MF) mimics parapsoriasis clinically in early stages, we aim to determine the dermatoscopic criteria and the histopathological correlations in patients with MF and small plaque parapsoriasis (SPP). METHODS: This prospective study involved 28 patients with clinical and histopathological diagnoses of MF and 31 patients with SPP. Videodermoscopy and USB capillaroscope were used to evaluate the patients vessels at ×200 magnification. Vascularity was evaluated through
