[Ultrasound diagnosis of fetal infections: current possibilities and limitations].

INTRODUCTION: Fetal infections, particularly those caused by TORCH agents (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes), may significantly affect fetal growth and development, resulting in a substantial risk of morbidity and mortality. Since infections are mostly preventable causes of congenital anomalies, early diagnosis relies on serological and molecular testing and fetal ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fetal infections and their detectable ultrasound features. METHOD: This retrospective s

[TORCH infections during pregnancy: clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment].

TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other [syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19], rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) constitute the classic group of congenital infections that may result in severe fetal and neonatal consequences. Transplacentally transmitted infections have been a critical component of prenatal care for decades. Although screening for this group of infections has been performed in Hungary since 1971, diagnostic approaches and screening strategies have undergone significant transformation. Current international recommendations, as well as national professional guidelines, no

Integrated multi-omics analysis identifies TBC1D10C as an NK- and T cell-associated diagnostic biomarker in childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is a growing global health crisis associated with an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. While accumulating evidence implicates immune dysregulation in obesity pathogenesis, the specific transcriptional alterations of immune cells, particularly NK cells and T cells in the context of childhood obesity, and their potential as non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers, remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the transcriptional alterations of NK cells and T cells in childhood obesity and evaluated their potential as non-invasive diagnostic bio

Post-Herpetic Neuralgia: Review of Pathophysiology, Mechanisms, and Drug Treatment.

Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of Herpes zoster infection. Although numerous targeted therapeutic drugs have been developed, it is difficult to achieve a complete cure. Abnormalities in neural circuits, ion channels, inflammatory factors, and gene regulation are crucial factors contributing to the development of PNH; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms of PNH is critical for advancing research and developing novel therapeutic strategies. Based on the latest findings, we systemati

[Vaccination of Older Adults in Portugal: Recommendations from the Geriatrics Study Group of the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine].

Older persons are more susceptible to infections and have a higher risk of serious complications, with a worse functional and vital prognosis. Vaccination is an effective strategy with a favorable safety profile for preventing infections and promoting healthy aging. In view of the clinical evidence and the vaccines available in Portugal in the first half of 2025, the Geriatrics Study Group of the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine presents a proposal for vaccination of adults aged 65 years or older. The experts also point out the need to create a national lifelong vaccination program that

Elevated Risk of Herpes Zoster in Vitiligo Patients: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study of Taiwan.

Emerging therapies for vitiligo, such as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, have raised concerns about an increased risk of herpes zoster (HZ), emphasizing the need to clarify the baseline HZ risk in patients with vitiligo. This study aimed to determine whether vitiligo itself is associated with a higher risk of HZ and to identify potential modifying factors, including systemic treatments. Using Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database from 2010 to 2022, a retrospective nationwide cohort study was conducted. Patients with vitiligo were identified through diagnostic codes and matched in a 1:

Managing concurrent nephrotic syndrome, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and herpes zoster in an immunocompromised child: Diagnostic difficulties and treatment outcomes.

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a disease characterized by heavy protein loss in the urine due to increased permeability of the glomerular membrane, leading to low levels of albumin in the blood. Several studies have shown that primary or secondary kidney disease, congenital infections, diabetes, lupus, cancer, or the use of certain medications can cause it. Therefore, this study aims to present a case of NS in a 9-year-old boy complicated by spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and herpes zoster. The patient presented to the emergency department with a 2-day history of worsening abdominal pain accomp

Ultra-High-Voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency Combined With Escitalopram for Refractory Postherpetic Itch in the Trigeminal Nerve.

Postherpetic itch (PHI) is a common complication of herpes zoster, predominantly affecting the head and face, and significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Few studies have addressed the concerns of PHI, and its available treatments have shown limited efficacy. We report a case of PHI in the trigeminal nerve in which a novel combination of ultra-high-voltage pulsed radiofrequency and escitalopram achieved significant relief of itch. This combined approach may provide a safe and effective option for intractable PHI.
