Herpes zoster hospitalization burden in Spain during the initial period of recombinant zoster vaccine implementation.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a vaccine-preventable disease with increasing incidence and hospitalization burden, particularly among older adults and immunocompromised individuals, who have an increased risk. In 2021, Spain introduced systematic vaccination with the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV). We conducted a retrospective, descriptive study using hospital discharge data from the Spanish Minimum Basic DataSet (MBDS) for the years 2022-2023. Hospitalization rates (HR), mortality rates (MR), case fatality rates (CFR), length of stay, comorbidities, and costs were analyzed nationally and for the reg

Epidemiology and risk factors of postherpetic neuralgia worldwide: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a debilitating complication of herpes zoster (HZ) that significantly impairs quality of life, disrupting sleep, daily activities and work capacity. Globally, PHN represents a major public health challenge, with marked heterogeneity in its epidemiological patterns across different regions and demographic groups. The escalating incidence of both HZ and PHN underscores the urgent need to elucidate modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, which is critical for implementing targeted prevention strategies and optimising therapeutic interventions. Neurotoxicity from acyclovir and valacyclovir in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis: Still rare, but still present.

Acyclovir and valacyclovir have been widely used for the treatment of herpes virus infections, including herpes zoster, with generally favorable outcomes. However, in patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly those undergoing peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis treatment, neurotoxicity can be a significant complication as renal excretion is the primary elimination pathway. Here, we report three cases of automated peritoneal dialysis patients treated for herpes zoster who developed neurotoxicity following acyclovir or valacyclovir administration. Symptoms appeared 2 to 4 days after tre

[Prevention of herpes zoster infection in patients with chronic diseases: a necessity due to its sociosanitary impact].

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a common disease with a considerable burden on health care systems. Its prevalence is higher in people ≥ 50 years old, and even higher in people with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, COPD, asthma or cardiovascular disease. The pain associated with HZ can be disabling and persistent and, as with other complications, can negatively affect patients' quality of life. Vaccination is the only strategy capable of preventing the onset of HZ and the development of its complications. The adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) has proved to be effective in several po

Herpes Zoster Infection Culminating in Abdominal Motor Paresis: A Case Report.

Herpes zoster (HZ) results in numerous complications, the most prevalent being Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN). There are fewer than 40 case reports of motor paresis of abdominal muscles secondary to Herpes zoster (Phantom hernia) in the literature to date. The pathogenesis of motor involvement resulting from HZ includes polyneuritis and segmental motor neuropathy, accompanied by subsequent muscle denervation. The viral transmission from the dorsal root ganglion to the anterior horn cells and anterior spinal nerve roots, along with inflammatory involvement of the motor nerve, is believed to cont

Comparison of efficacy and safety of non-oral therapeutic interventions for zoster-associated pain: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Zoster-associated pain (ZAP) encompasses acute, subacute, and postherpetic neuralgia stages. It often results in persistent sensory abnormalities and substantial impairment of quality of life. Although oral pharmacotherapy remains the first-line and foundational approach, its effectiveness may be limited in some patients; accordingly, non-oral interventions are investigated as complementary or escalated strategies. However, high-quality evidence investigating the relative efficacy and safety of these interventions remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study intended to systematically ev
