Differentiation of pityriasis lichenoides chronica from guttate psoriasis by dermoscopy.

Clinical differentiation between pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) and guttate psoriasis (GP) may sometimes be a difficult task, which often requires histological analysis to reach a definitive diagnosis. In this study, PLC and GP lesions were examined using dermoscopy, and the significance of specific dermoscopic findings was investigated in order to facilitate their differentiation and decrease the number of cases requiring biopsy. We found that the incidence of orange-yellowish structureless areas, focal dotted vessels and nondotted vessels was statistically significant in PLC, while th

Pityriasis Lichenoides in Childhood: Review of Clinical Presentation and Treatment Options.

Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) is a skin condition of unclear etiology that occurs not uncommonly in childhood. It is often classified into the acute form, pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA), and the chronic form, pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC). We performed a comprehensive review of the English-language literature using the PubMed database of all cases of childhood PL reported from 1962 to 2014 and summarized the epidemiology, clinical features, treatment options, and prognosis of this condition in children. The proposed etiologies are discussed, including its associati

Pediatric mycosis fungoides in Singapore: a series of 46 children.

Few studies have evaluated Asian children with mycosis fungoides (MF). We report a series of patients from a tertiary dermatologic institution in Singapore. A retrospective review was performed of patients younger than 16 years old diagnosed with MF between 2000 and 2008 at the National Skin Centre, Singapore. Forty-six patients were identified. At initial presentation, a provisional diagnosis of MF was made in 19 patients (41.3%), pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) in 11 (23.9%) and postinflammatory hypopigmentation due to eczema or other causes in 11 (23.9%). After skin biopsy, the hypopi

[Papular mycosis fungoides].

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. A new form of incipient MF has recently been described: papular MF. Herein, we report a case and propose a literature review. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 63-year-old man presented with erythematous and non-pruritic papular lesions of the trunk. The general examination was unremarkable. A skin biopsy showed moderately dense epidermotropic lymphocytic infiltration consistent with MF. Screening for CD30 was negative. Treatment with an extremely potent corticosteroid (clobetasol, one application per day) seemed e

Pityriasis lichenoides in an Asian population.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies comparing pityriasis lichenoides (PL) in adults and children, with fewer involving Asians. We compared the clinical profile and treatment outcomes of 10 adults and five children diagnosed with PL. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a series of patients diagnosed with PL at our hospital from 2002 to 2008. RESULTS: We identified 10 adults and five children (nine adults and four children with pityriasis lichenoides chronica; one adult and one child with pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta). Mean age of onset of disease was 42.2 years in adults and 1

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with herpes simplex virus type 2.

Introduction. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare, acquired spectrum of skin conditions of an unknown etiology. Case Report. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent outbreaks of herpes simplex virus associated with the onset of red-to-brown maculopapules located predominantly in trunk in each recurrence. Positive serologies to herpes simplex virus type 2 were detected. Histopathological examination of one of the lesions was consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides chronica. Discussion. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare cutaneous entity of an unknown cause which includes different c

Origin Use of CD4, CD8, and CD1a Immunostains in Distinguishing Mycosis Fungoides from its Inflammatory Mimics: A Pilot Study.

UNLABELLED: Patch-stage/early mycosis fungoides (MF) is difficult to differentiate from benign dermatoses, despite several robust histologic criteria. Most studies include advanced lesions and data about early disease is limited. OBJECTIVES: (1) To compare the CD4:CD8 ratio in patch-stage MF versus inflammatory mimics. (2) To study patterns of CD1a expression in the epidermis and dermis in the two groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty cases each of early MF and inflammatory dermatoses were selected. The diagnoses were established after clinicopathologic correlation, repeat biopsies, and foll

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with use of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

Herein, we present three cases of Pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) in patients who developed the rash after use of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors. The patients had complete resolution after standard treatment by dermatologists and withdrawal of the offending agents. In one case, the patient had a previous episode of a similar rash that occurred with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors use many years previously. Pityriasis lichenoides chronica is a condition of unknown aetiology. Several agents have been associated with its presentation. We postulate HMG-CoA

Phototherapy for pityriasis lichenoides: our experience.

Pityriasis lichenoides is a benign disease that includes a continuous spectrum with two polar ends: pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) and pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC). Although its benign and self-limited character, treatment is required, both for itch relief and for cosmetic issues. The present study is a retrospective analysis of 13 patients (11 PLC and 2 PLEVA) treated in our institution with psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) or ultraviolet A combined with ultraviolet B (UVA/UVB) during the period 1998-2011. In the PUVA group, complete response was achieved in

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta with numerous CD30(+) cells: a variant mimicking lymphomatoid papulosis and other cutaneous lymphomas. A clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular biological study of 13 cases.

Pityriasis lichenoides comprises a clinicopathologic spectrum of cutaneous inflammatory disorders, with the 2 most common variants being pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) and pityriasis lichenoides chronica. The aim of the study was to describe 13 cases of a unique PLEVA variant characterized in the conspicuous CD30 component and thus mimicking lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP), a condition currently classified in the spectrum of CD30 lymphoproliferative disorders. The cohort included 10 female and 3 male patients whose ages at diagnosis ranged from 7 to 89 years (mean 41 y; med

Varicella precipitating febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease.

We report a 9-year-old boy with skin lesions clinically and histologically compatible with pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta that evolved to the severe variant febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease and finally to pityriasis lichenoides chronica. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) was isolated in culture medium from the skin lesions and serum serology was positive for VZV. This is the first time that a virus has been isolated in culture in this condition.

Phototherapy in pediatric patients: choosing the appropriate treatment option.

Phototherapeutic modalities, including narrowband-UVB, broadband-UVB, PUVA photochemotherapy, and excimer laser therapy are valuable tools that can be used for photoresponsive dermatoses in children. As a systematically safer alternative compared with internal agents, including the prebiologic and biological therapies, phototherapy should be considered a possible treatment option for children with diseases including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pityriasis lichenoides chronica, and vitiligo.
