Interesting Mucocutaneous Manifestations in COVID-19 Infection or Vaccination Confirmed by Histopathology: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Mucocutaneous complications or adverse events due to SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination have been well delineated in the literature, respectively. Most eruptions are considered mild and self-limiting; however, for the atypical cases with a tentative clinical diagnosis, performing a biopsy and histopathological assessment is pivotal to confirm the diagnosis and subsequently prescribe a more tailored treatment. Despite the diverse reporting of such incidents globally, most studies restrict the rate of biopsied cases to less than 15%. CASE PRESENTATIONS: This case series elucidate

Atypical plaque psoriasis: a clinicopathological study of 20 cases.

BACKGROUND: Plaque psoriasis is relatively straightforward to identify. When diagnostic concerns arise in atypical cases, a biopsy is needed. It is widely accepted that the Munro microabscess and the spongiform pustule of Kogoj are diagnostic pathological features. However, the diagnostic dilemma is likely to arise in cases without these specific pathological changes and typical clinical features. This study aimed to investigate clinical and pathological clues in distinguishing atypical plaque psoriasis from its mimics. METHODS: We evaluated the clinicopathological features of 20 cases of aty

Utility of IL-36 immunostaining in distinguishing psoriasis from pityriasis rosea and pityriasis lichenoides.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease driven by upregulation of cytokines in the Th17 pathway, including interleukin-36 (IL-36). Previous studies have highlighted the utility of IL-36 immunostaining for psoriasis compared to spongiotic dermatitis and other psoriasiform dermatoses; however, no study has examined the role of IL-36 staining in distinguishing psoriasis from pityriasis rosea (PR) and pityriasis lichenoides (PL), known histologic mimickers of psoriasis. METHODS: We compared the immunostaining pattern of IL-36 for 21 PR cases, 22 PL cases, and 10 psoriasis cases. We

Reply to comment on: Unexpectedly high prevalence of primary immune deficiency in fibromyalgia: serologic features and clinical correlates.

Our aim was to investigate the effects on quality of life of pityriasis rosea (PR) in children and the concerns of their parents. We recruited all children ages 5-16 years with a diagnosis of PR in a primary care setting over a period of 30 months. Controls were the next child of the same sex and comparable age consulting for atopic dermatitis or for conditions unrelated to the skin. Information on parental concerns was also gathered. Ten children with PR and 20 control subjects were recruited. Total Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) scores of children with PR (mean 3.50; 95% c

Diagnostic accuracy of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy in non-neoplastic dermatoses (general dermatology): A multicentric retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary data support the possible use of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence (UVF) dermoscopy in general dermatology, yet no accuracy analysis has been performed so far. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate diagnostic accuracy of UVF dermoscopy in clinically similar non-neoplastic conditions as compared to polarized light-based dermoscopy. METHODS: Patients with dermatoses potentially showing UV-induced findings were considered; cases were grouped according to clinical patterns and controls were also included. Standardized evaluation of dermoscopic pictures of the target lesion along with com

Evidence of "Silent" Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Psoriasis, Vitiligo, and Pityriasis Rosea Cases: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis (PS), vitiligo (VT), and Pityriasis rosea (PR) are chronic skin diseases often occurring as a consequence of exaggerated immune responses. These skin manifestations can be triggered as a result of the molecular mimicry between viral protein (s) and host protein (s), which could generate auto-antibodies. In addition, it can be hypothesised that skin diseases are manifestations of the reduced immunity that is observed in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected individuals. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of HBV in PS, VT, and PR cases and Human Herpes Viru

Viral reactivation following COVID-19 vaccination: a review of the current literature.

Currently, four vaccines for COVID-19 have been licensed by the European Medicines Agency: two viral vector-based vaccines and two mRNA-based vaccines. Since their approval, several cutaneous reactions related to vaccination have been reported in the literature. Among these, viral reactivations are one of the most frequent. The aim of this article was to investigate the current literature regarding viral reactivations following COVID-19 vaccination, focusing attention on pityriasis rosea (PR), herpes zoster and herpes simplex. A comprehensive literature search using various databases was perfo

Pityriasis Rosea With Multiple Herald Patches Resulting in a V-shaped Pattern and a Christmas Tree Distribution.

Pityriasis rosea (PR), a benign and self-limiting skin disorder, typically manifests as a single initial lesion known as the herald patch. The herald patch is commonly followed by the development of secondary erythematous papules and plaques, aligning with Langer's lines to form a specific distribution pattern, resembling a Christmas tree on the back and a V-shaped pattern on the upper chest. Therefore, diagnosing PR may not be difficult based on its typical clinical presentation. In contrast, cases of atypical PR presentation have been reported, encompassing several differential diagnoses. He

Clinicopathologic assessment of secondary syphilis avoids misdiagnosis: results of comprehensive evaluation of 114 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary syphilis is well-known for its protean cutaneous manifestations and therefore very easy to be misdiagnosed. AIM: The current study was to observe the frequency of histopathological features characterizing secondary syphilis, and summarize the diseases most likely to be misdiagnosed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study a total of 129 pathological specimens from 114 patients with biopsy-proven secondary syphilis were retrospectively analysed and categorized according to clinicopathologic characteristics. The frequency of histopathological features characterizing seconda

Radiological and Clinical Follow-up of Alpha-D Cervical Disk Prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Fusion surgery is applied to prevent segmental instability after surgery for cervical disk herniation. Motion-sparing surgeries have been developed to prevent adjacent segment disease after fusion surgery. Total disk replacement, one of these methods, has been applied in the cervical region for more than 20 years. We aimed to investigate the medium-term radiological and clinical outcomes of patients who had received Alpha-D disk prosthesis after cervical disk surgery, in terms of incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) and other complications. METHODS: We included 33 patients (

Serum Interleukin-36 in Pityriasis Rosea: A Potential Biomarker for Disease Severity.

OBJECTIVE: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a self-limiting acute rash with unclear etiology and pathogenesis. The cytokine profile of PR is an infrequently investigated field of research. The aim of this study was to assess the level of IL-36 in sera of patients with PR and its possible interrelation with disease severity. METHODS: Forty patients with PR were included in this case-control study, and 40 comparable healthy control subjects. Severity was assessed using pityriasis rosea severity score (PRSS) and serum IL-36 was assessed using ELISA. RESULTS: Serum IL-36 was significantly higher in pati

A Review of Pityriasis Rosea in Relation to SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 Infection and Vaccination.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute exanthematous disease, commonly preceded by a primary solitary herald patch followed by the onset of smaller scaly papulosquamous lesions within days to weeks. The exact cause of PR remains unclear; however, rash eruptions are thought to be associated with systemic reactivation of human herpesvirus 6 and 7 (HHV-6/7). Several cutaneous manifestations, including PR, have been reported secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection and/or COVID-19 vaccination. The purpose of this review is to synthesize available data regarding PR in close association with SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
