Oral mucosal changes in seniors: results of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Various pathologic conditions can cause oral mucosal changes. However, data regarding the prevalence and sociodemographic distribution of oral mucosal changes are insufficient. The 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6) not only provides cross-sectional analyses of oral mucosal changes but also longitudinal analyses after a 9-year follow-up. METHOD AND MATERIALS: For cross-sectional analysis, data from 797 younger seniors (65- to 74-year-olds) from the DMS • 6 cross-sectional component were employed. Longitudinal analysis was performed on data from the DMS • 6 senior cohort includ

Facial Melanosis: A Clinico-Dermoscopic Evaluation and Quality of Life Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Facial melanoses (FM) represent a heterogeneous group of pigmentary disorders characterized by altered facial pigmentation, including melasma, lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP), Riehl's melanosis, erythema dyschromicum perstans, and others. These conditions constitute a major proportion of dermatology outpatient visits and, despite being largely asymptomatic, exert a substantial negative impact on quality of life (QoL) due to cosmetic disfigurement. The etiology of many forms of FM remains unclear, and studies correlating clinical, dermatoscopic, and QoL parameters are limited. STUD

Anti-M3 Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Autoantibody in the Serum and Saliva of Oral Lichen Planus Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oral lichen planus OLP) is a chronic, T-cell-mediated disease frequently accompanied by xerostomia. Prior work suggests reduced salivary M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M3R) may contribute to hyposalivation. We investigated whether anti-M3R autoantibodies are elevated in serum and saliva of OLP patients compared with healthy controls. METHODS: In this case-control study, we enrolled 30 patients with OLP and 30 matched healthy controls. Exclusion criteria eliminated confounders of salivary dysfunction. Unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates were collected un

Isolated nail psoriasis: diagnostic challenges and therapeutic advances.

Isolated nail psoriasis, defined as psoriatic nail disease with no or little involvement of the skin, is a clinically significant yet frequently underrecognized condition. Its presentation often mimics other nail disorders such as onychomycosis or lichen planus which can lead to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Patients may experience substantial functional impairment and psychosocial distress. This review highlights current knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic challenges of isolated NP, with emphasis on populations where disease recognition is p

Measuring pain in oral lichen planus: a comparative study of four assessment scales and their correlation.

Oral lichen planus is a chronic disease of the oral mucosa, with pain as one of its main symptoms. This study aimed to assess the correlation between the results of four pain intensity measures-including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), and Verbal Rating Scale (VRS)- in a population of patients diagnosed with oral lichen planus. In this prospective observational study, 66 patients with oral lichen planus participated. Four pain assessment scales were used, including VAS, NRS, VRS, and SF-MPQ. Participants completed these

Upadacitinib is effective in treating psoriasis combined with lichen planus: a case report.

Psoriasis frequently coexists with other immune-mediated conditions such as arthritis, alopecia areata, vitiligo, and hidradenitis suppurativa, many of which remain challenging to manage. To date, there have been rarely reported cases of treating psoriasis combined with lichen planus. We report a case of coexisting psoriasis and lichen planus in a female patient. Despite initial efficacy with acitretin and topical mometasone, the patient self-discontinued treatment over safety concerns, prompting a relapse. Upadacitinib was subsequently initiated and yielded marked improvement within 3 months.

Clinical and Trichoscopic Evaluation of Beard in Men with Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: A Multicenter Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring alopecia first described in 1994. It is more common in postmenopausal women, and its incidence has increased significantly among both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. FFA is less frequent in men and beard involvement occurs in 50-74% of male FFA patients. This study aimed to assess the clinical and trichoscopic features of beard involvement in FFA patients. METHODS: After the Institutional Review Board's approval, a prospective multicenter study was conducted involving 25 male patients with FFA. Clinical photos were taken and

Prognostic determinants of early and late relapse in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: A multicenter retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma exhibits a significant disease burden due to local relapses and metastasis. Despite advances in prognosis, little evidence exists on prognostic factors of early and late relapse, which could provide more personalized management and follow-up schedules. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study including 23,166 cases of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Patients were categorized into those with early recurrence (≤4 months), late recurrence (>24 months), and no recurrence. Risk factors and tumor characteristics were analyzed to

RNA in situ hybridization for ISG15 and IFI6 highlights IFN-I activity in discoid lupus erythematosus.

IFN-I signaling is a hallmark of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), but routine tissue-based assays to detect this pathway are limited. Re-analysis of public transcriptomic data identified ISG15 and IFI6 as candidate IFN markers, ranking among the top differentially expressed genes in DLE datasets. We performed RNA in situ hybridization for both markers on archival specimens from DLE (n =11), other inflammatory dermatoses (n = 11; atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus), and controls (n = 8). A total of 81 slides were scored (0-4+) in epidermal and dermal compartments. RNA in situ hybridi

Beyond Clinicopathological Criteria: A Practical Management Framework for Oral Lichen Planus.

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic T-cell-mediated inflammatory disorder classified by the World Health Organization as a potentially malignant disorder. Diagnosis remains challenging due to clinical and histopathological overlap with other oral white lesions, including lichenoid reactions, frictional keratosis, and malignancy. Objectives: This systematic search with narrative review aimed to synthesize current diagnostic criteria, characterize key differential diagnoses, and provide an evidence-based diagnostic framework for clinicians. Methods: A comprehensive literature searc

Upadacitinib Treatment for Fulminant Cutaneous and Mucosal Lichen Planus.

We report an otherwise healthy 24-year-old woman with a fulminant presentation of cutaneous and mucosal lichen planus (LP), progressing from approximately 15% to 80% total body surface area (BSA) in four weeks without an identifiable drug or infectious trigger. Oral examination was initially negative for signs of mucosal LP, such as Wickham striae and associated erosions. Subtle Wickham striae developed at the labial frenulum with mild sensitivity to spicy foods by week four. Laboratory evaluation, including complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel, antinuclear antibody, hepat

Management of Oral Lichen Planus in a Patient With Comorbidities: A Case Report.

Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory, immune-mediated mucocutaneous disease characterized by multiple clinical presentations, mainly reticular and erosive types. The association between lichen planus and diabetes mellitus has been widely accepted, which can aggravate the disease severity and affect treatment outcome. A 42-year-old male of Asian descent presents with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia, having pain and burning sensation, which was exacerbated by hot and spicy foods. Intraoral clinical examination revealed bilateral white striations and erosive lesions on the buccal muc

Rapid Onset of Response in Adults with Dermatomyositis Receiving Dazukibart: A Phase 2, Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study.

PURPOSE: Interferon-β (IFNβ) dysregulation contributes to dermatomyositis (DM) pathogenesis. In a previously published phase 2 study, 12-week treatment with dazukibart, an anti-IFNβ monoclonal antibody, reduced disease activity in moderate-to-severe DM. This prespecified secondary analysis evaluated the rapidity of onset of efficacy of dazukibart in DM at time points before Week 12, which may inform treatment decisions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase 2 study (NCT03181893). Adults with skin-predominant (SP) or muscle-p

Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP) for Refractory Lichenoid Disorders: A Retrospective Analysis of Efficacy and Long-Term Outcomes.

Erosive Lichen Planus (ELP) is a debilitating T-cell mediated dermatosis often refractory to conventional therapies. While Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP) is established for other T-cell diseases, long-term data on its efficacy across the lichenoid spectrum, including non-erosive forms, remain limited. We conducted a retrospective study at Amiens-Picardie University Hospital including five adult patients with refractory lichen (erosive or non-erosive) treated with ECP after January 2021. Clinical response was assessed every 3 months, and progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed. Five fe

Chemical Peels in Skin of Color: A Scoping Review of Safety, Efficacy, and Practice Patterns.

Chemical peels are widely used for both cosmetic and medical dermatologic indications, but their application in individuals with skin of color (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) requires caution due to the increased risk of pigmentary complications. To assess their safety and efficacy, a comprehensive PubMed review was conducted, identifying 473 studies, seven of which met the inclusion criteria, specifically those articles documenting chemical peels in skin of color populations and reported primary outcomes. Among the seven included studies, five evaluated peels for the treatment of acne and acne
