A Decadal Bibliometric Analysis on the Therapeutic Strategies in Oral Lichen Planus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory autoimmune illness that mostly affects the oral mucosa but may also affect other mucous membrane. It has higher prevalence in female patients of fourth to sixth decade of life with reticular being the commonest clinical variant. Clinical assessment, patient history, biopsy findings, and immunofluorescence were used to diagnose OLP. This study aimed to assess research publication trends in therapeutic strategies in the treatment of OLP, examining publication growth, country and institution contributions, and collabor

Off-label use of JAK1 inhibitor upadacitinib in dermatology.

Upadacitinib, a selective Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor, has gained FDA approval for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and atopic dermatitis. Emerging studies suggest its potential for off-label use in various dermatological disorders. This review systematically explores the off-label dermatological applications of upadacitinib. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Studies on alopecia areata, hidradenitis suppurativa, vitiligo, and other conditions were included. The review identified two randomized controlled trials (RC

Dickkopf 1 and Neuregulin 1 as cutaneous biomarkers for dermal pigmentation activity in acquired dermal macular hyperpigmentation (ADMH): a case control study.

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP), ashy dermatosis, and Riehl's melanosis are all referred to by the general term acquired dermal macular hyperpigmentation (ADMH). These conditions are distinguished clinically by hyperpigmented macules and patches of unknown cause. Melanogenesisis regulated by multiple dermal factors secreted by fibroblasts and among them are neuregulin1 (NRG1) and dickkopf1 (DKK1). This study was designed to study NRG1 and DKK1 as cutaneous biomarkers for activity of dermal pigmentation in ADMH and to correlate their activity with acquired dermal macular hyperpigmentation area

Oral cancer driver gene mutations in oral potentially malignant disorders: clinical significance and diagnostic implications.

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), such as oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral leukoplakia (OLK), are clinical conditions associated with the risk of developing oral squamous cell carcinoma; however, no standardized treatment guidelines exist. Mutations in specific genes, known as oral cancer driver gene mutations (ODGMs), are responsible for carcinogenesis. We aimed to analyze the ODGMs in OPMDs and investigate their clinical correlations. We investigated 41 cases of OPMDs, including OLP and OLK, and performed next-generation sequencing using a custom gene panel targeting whole exons

Atezolizumab-Induced Generalized Cutaneous Lichen Planus in a Patient With Metastatic Small Cell Lung Cancer Successfully Treated With Isotretinoin: A Case Report.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors, now widely used in treating various malignancies, increase the risk of autoimmune reactions and immune-related adverse events (irAEs), with skin toxicities being the most frequent. These agents enhance the immune response against tumors by blocking the suppression of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Here, we report a rare case of generalized cutaneous lichen planus induced by atezolizumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor administered for small cell lung cancer. After consulting with the oncologist, we opted to initiate isotretinoin as the first-line treatment. Considering

Dental problems and oral microbiome alterations in ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that has not well-established etiology. The role of microbial dysregulation in its pathogenesis has been recently highlighted. Overall, microbiome alterations concern the reduction of bacterial abundance and diversity, resulting in gut microbiome imbalance negatively affecting immunological aspects. There is a link between ulcerative colitis and the oral microbiome. The changes of oral microbiome are found at many levels, from gently dysbiotic composition to the presence of the main periodontal microbes. The analysis of oral microbiome can be a part of p

Discrepancy in the Histological Diagnoses of Oral Lichen Planus Based on WHO Criteria Versus the Newly Proposed Diagnostic Set of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Background/Objectives: The diagnosis of oral lichen planus (OLP) is challenging because many other oral diseases demonstrate similar clinical and microscopic features. Clinicopathological discrepancy and inter- and intraobserver variability in the histological assessment of OLP have been shown in the literature, as there are no unified diagnostic criteria for the disease. In 2016, the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP) proposed a new diagnostic set for OLP. The aim of the study was to assess the reliability of the AAOMP histological criteria in diagnosing OLP. Methods

Comparative Analysis of Sociodemographic, Clinical Features, Laboratory Findings, and Treatment Protocols in Generalized and Localized Cutaneous Lichen Planus.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic, inflammatory, and mucocutaneous disease that can present in various clinical forms, affecting the skin, mucosa, and appendages of the skin. A more extensive form of cutaneous LP, known as generalized cutaneous LP (GCLP), involves a significant portion of the body surface area. Because of the accompanying intense pruritus and difficulties with its treatment, the diagnosis and treatment of GCLP are gaining importance. In this study, we aimed to compare the characteristics of cutaneous LP with localized involvement and those of GCLP. METHODS: We retro

Molecular Markers in Oral Lichen Planus - Insight into Pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by immune-mediated basal keratinocyte apoptosis. In recent years the importance of programmed cell death for the tissue destruction in OLP has been disputed, while at the same time an increased proliferative index has been reported in the epithelium of these lesions. OLP is considered as a precancerous condition. This study investigated the expression of pro-apoptotic, anti-apoptotic and proliferative markers in OLP lesions in an attempt to understand more about the pathogenesis and malignant potential of the di

The association of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio wıth lichen planus.

OBJECTIVE: In some diseases associated with inflammation, the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio can be used as a biomarker of inflammation. Since lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease, our study aimed to investigate the relationship between C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio and disease activity and whether it plays a role in determining disease prognosis, and compare them with those in subjects without lichen planus. METHODS: This is a case-control study. Demographic data, clinical features, and laboratory measures, including neutrophil, lymphocyte, eosinophil, platelet counts,

Repurposing the composite assessment of index lesion severity scoring system in cutaneous lichen planus.

Current validated lichen planus (LP) scoring systems are complicated and optimized for generalized, multi-site disease. There is a need for a validated, simple lesional assessment in LP. Herein, we repurpose and optimize the modified Composite Assessment of Index Lesion Severity (mCAILS) for LP and to validate the optimized lichen planus CAILS (lpCAILS). In this study, cutaneous LP lesions for disease activity and treatment response were prospectively assessed at two single-center, single-arm, open-label clinical trials at Mayo Clinic, Arizona with lpCAILS. Twelve index lesions from the topica

Expression of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition-Related Protein Claudin-10 in Oral Lichen Planus.

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common skin disease of indeterminate etiology that can affect the oral mucosa. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a critical biological event that plays an essential role in several functions, such as development, tissue repair, and stem cell dynamics, but also in cancer progression. Claudin-10, an EMT-related protein, is encoded by the CLDN10 gene in humans. In the present work, we studied the immunohistological expression of Claudin-10 in OLP compared to normal oral mucosa. METHODS: Fifty-one formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples diagn

Lichen Planus Initially Presenting as Poikiloderma: A Challenging Case Report.

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the skin, mucous membranes, nails, and hair. Cutaneous LP (CLP) is characterized by violaceous, polygonal, flat-topped papules and plaques that are intensely pruritic. Although it can develop on any part of the body, it most commonly affects the flexor surfaces of the wrists, lower back, and ankles. This report presents an atypical case of LP in a 33-year-old woman who initially exhibited poikilodermatous changes with bluish-gray patches, persisting for a decade. Due to the overlapping clinical and histopathological features, a
