A 43-year-old man with generalized lichen planus demonstrated serum antibodies against autologous lesional skin. The use of androgens in the treatment of gynecic disorders has had few adherents because of the belief generally held that androgen administration to the female patient is antiphysiologic and antipharmacologic. Testosterone in physiologic doses complements estrogens and is synergestic rather than contraphysiologic. Physiologic doses of testosterone may be used to advantage in the management of the menopause, sexual dysfunction, lichen planus vel atrophicus, fibrocystic disease of the breast, and sexual infantilism resulting from hypopituitarism as well as in several other disorders.

This investigation provides the first detailed population-based reporting of white keratotic lesions of the oral mucosa in a United States population. More than 21% of 3,783 oral mucosal and connective tissue lesions reported from 23,616 white Americans, usually over 35 years of age, were keratotic lesions, representing 3.4% of the entire group of examinees. In 52 patients with oral lichen planus topographically related to amalgam restorations, the fillings were replaced by other materials in 18, 16 of whom experienced complete remission of the lesions within 1-12 months. These results are discussed in relation to the results of epicutaneous patch tests for possible allergy to a number of mercury compounds. The term "oral lichenoid reaction", is suggested to describe these lesions.

Lichen planus is a common disorder affecting the skin, oral and genital epithelium, hair and nails. It is said to account for approximately 1% of new patient referrals to skin clinics (Samman, 1979). It is, therefore, an important entity to the dermatologist. However, lichen planus and lichen-planus-like reactions have been described in a number of clinical situations which may bring them first to the attention of doctors practising in other specialties.

To explore the physiologic or pathologic roles of autoreactive T cells, we examined immunological functions of several autoreactive mouse T cell clones in vitro and in vivo. We reviewed longitudinal nail biopsies performed at Henry Ford Hospital on patients with acquired nail dystrophies to see whether the procedure did, indeed, provide useful diagnostic information and to see which microscopic features were most helpful in histopathologic diagnosis.
