Three patients showing features of both lupus erythematosus and lichen planus are described together with their histological, immunofluorescence and other investigative findings. The similarities between lupus erythematosus and lichen planus are discussed and it is suggested that these may be the result of common pathophysiological pathways.

The CO2 laser has been used in a variety of lesions for two and one half years in areas other than the larynx. These lesions include viral papillomas, leukoplakias and erosive lichen planus in various otolaryngological sites. Laser therapy is compared with other modalities of treatment for similar lesions and the advantages and disadvantages of this type treatment is evaluated.

After a short compilation of the descriptions of the elastic globes offered in the literature, the results of 446 tissue specimens of five different dermatoses (lichen planus, erythematodes chronicus discoides, tuberculosis cutis luposa, basal cell carcinoma, and nervus cell nevi). An increased appearance of elastic globes was found in erythematodes chronicus discoides and tuberculosis cutis luposa, compared with the other dermatoses. A retrospective clinicopathologic and immunopathologic review of 50 cases of scalp alopecia was done to assess the diagnostic value of the immunofluorescent staining technic. Discoid lupus erythematosus and lichen planus almost always produce different patterns of immunoglobulin and complement deposition. The most frequently observed diseases of the oral mucosa in ageing patients are: leucoplacic changes, lichen ruber planus, pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigoid and the Gougerot-Sjögren syndrome. However, there are other affections which are described in their characteristic symptomatology: --whitish changes--changes by pigments--aphtous or aphtoid changes--bullous and erosive changes--tongue burning and glossodynia--tumorous and exulcerative changes. Lesions of gingival lichen planus were studied ultrastructurally to determine the types of cells, other than keratinocytes, present within the epithelial layer and the relationship of these cells to each other and to the keratinocytes. Biopsies of oral lesions from 21 patients with diagnostic skin lesions of discoid lupus erythematosus and from 21 patients with oral lichen planus and leukoplakia were examined blindly by light microscopy. The correct histologic diagnosis (DLE) was established in less than half of the cases. In one-third of the cases differentiation between DLE and lichen planus could not be made. In the rest of the cases histologic diagnoses other than DLE were stated. The study shows the need for better diagnostic methods for oral lesions.

The epithelium derived from buccal mucosa affected by lichen planus reticularis was subjected to histometric and stereologic analysis. Point counting procedures were employed to analyse a total of 2,220 electron micrographs sampled from 5 epithelial strata in 9 biopsies, 7 with distinct and 2 with faint Wickham's striae. A study of 100 cases of vitiligo showed the frequency of associated skin and visceral lesions. A skin disease was associated in 24 cases: psoriasis 4 cases, alopecia 4 cases, eczema 3 cases, malignant melanoma 2 cases, dermatitis herpetiformis 1 case, lichen planus 9 cases. Direct immunofluorescent (IF) staining was performed on biopsy specimens from fifty-three patients with active lichen planus. In fifteen of these cases uninvolved skin sites were also examined.
