Lichen planus is an autoimmune disease that typically involves skin and the mucosa of the genitalia and mouth. Conjunctival involvement is rare, and the microscopic abnormalities of affected conjunctivae are not well characterized. We treated two patients with cicatrizing conjunctivitis and extraocular conjunctival lichen planus confirmed by biopsy. The effectiveness of the Viratype Omniprobe in situ human papillomavirus tissue hybridization kit (Digene Diagnostics) was evaluated for the detection of HPV DNA in common orofacial lesions. Seventy mucocutaneous lesions were hybridized with a biotinylated Omniprobe that was specific for HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52, and 56. The bullous diseases that are neither immune-mediated nor inherited form a heterogeneous group that may be classified according to their major histopathologic characteristics. Such a classification allows clear distinctions to be made between entities that may have clinical similarities such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, erythema multiforme/toxic epidermal necrolysis, and acute graft-versus-host disease. Proper differentiation of these entities is critical for their study and for appropriate management.

A series of 40 lesions of various kinds as lichen planus are examined using samples stained with trichromic test. HLA-DR expression with immunoperoxidase technique and direct immunofluorescence using the standard techniques. The occurrence of oral leukoplakia and lichen planus in 1600 patients with diabetes mellitus (815 type 1: insulin-dependent, 761 type 2: non-insulin-dependent)-under care at the International Medicine Department-was studied. Psoriasis with oral manifestations is rarely seen. It has been reported in the past either as an oral manifestation of this skin disease or lichen planus accompanying psoriasis. Very few periodontal lesions associated with dermatologic psoriasis have been reported in the literature. This report describes a case of psoriasis in which exacerbation of the cutaneous disease was accompanied by gingival epithelial changes and periodontal bursts, together with a report on the light microscopy of biopsies from periodontal lesions.

We investigated the incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and skin and oral lesions in chronic GVHD in 90 Japanese leukemia patients surviving over 100 days after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from HLA-compatible siblings. The clinical characteristics of chronic cutaneous GVHD occurring in eight of these patients are summarized. There were some differences from previous reports in the USA and Europe. We studied the reactivity of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) 17.13 and 63.12 with normal and diseased human oral mucosa by means of the immunoperoxidase technique. The specimens included: 22 normal oral tissues, 20 benign tumors, 17 lichen planus, 23 focal keratosis and epithelial hyperplasias, 18 proliferative verrucous leukoplakias, 20 dysplasias, and 21 squamous cell carcinomas. Ashen dermatosis (D.C.), or dyschromic perstans erythema, is a chronic dermatosis, which is asymptomatic and practically exclusive in Latin-American countries. Its clinical characteristics have been well defined (blue-gray patches), as well as its nonspecific histopathologic patterns; its etiology is unknown. This paper studies 20 patients suffering from ashen dermatitis. There was a majority of female patients, the dermatosis was disseminated, bilateral and symmetric. It is different from pigmented lichen although the histopathologic patterns is similar.

To assess cellular immunity in oral lichen planus (OLP), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were obtained from 19 OLP patients and 30 control subjects. Twenty patients with oral lichen planus and topically treated with fluocinolone acetonide in orabase 0.1% (FAO) were compared with 20 treated with triamcinolone acetonide in orabase 0.1% (TAO). During 4 wk of treatment the lesions in 13 of 19 patients could be effectively cured with FAO whereas only 8 of 19 patients were cured with TAO. These differences were statistically significant. There were no differences in blood pressure, plasma cortisol or number of circulating lymphocytes after treatment with FAO, but the number of eosinophils was reduced in every case after treatment for 6 months. Leukoedema, a grayish-white lesion of the oral mucosa in humans, was once thought to be a probable precursor to leukoplakia. A case of lichen planus pemphigoides is described in which bullae and erosions affected the areas of lichen planus only. The diagnosis was confirmed by the finding of linear C3 and IgG deposition in the basement membrane zone (BMZ) of perilesional skin. Indirect immunofluorescence revealed circulating IgG anti-BMZ antibodies and a lamina lucida split was demonstrated by electron microscopy. This case challenges the clinical dogma that the occurrence of bullae on normal-appearing skin is essential for the diagnosis of lichen planus pemphigoides.

Lectin binding patterns in psoriasis, lichen planus and seborrheic keratosis lesions were studied using 14 different biotinyl lectins and avidin-horseradish peroxidase. Ultrastructural analysis of oral lichen planus was performed in 18 cases, focusing on cell-to-cell interactions. In the peripheral portion of the lesion, the most consistent findings were a widening of intercellular spaces, separation of the basement membrane (BM) from basal cells and scarce inflammatory cells.
