Comparison of cladribine plus prednisone with chlorambucil plus prednisone in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Final report of the Polish Adult Leukemia Group (PALG CLL1).

BACKGROUND: We previously published an early report of a randomized, multicenter trial on the efficacy and toxicity of cladribine (2-CdA) + prednisone (P) compared with chlorambucil (Chl) + P in previously untreated patients with progressive or symptomatic chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Here we present the final report of this study. MATERIAL/METHODS: Of 229 patients, 126 received 2-CdA+P and 103 Chl+P. Patients with no response or progression after three courses or who relapsed earlier than 12 months after completing one treatment were switched to the other. Patients who relapsed later were r

Bilateral lichen striatus.

We describe a very rare case of bilateral lichen striatus on the lower extremities with a history of more than ten years. Histopathologically, the lesions demonstrated a lichenoid tissue reaction with foci of spongiosis and perivascular inflammatory cell infiltration. In addition, the finding of lymphocytic infiltrations around the eccrine duct was observed. They were treated successfully with topical application of corticosteroid ointment. To the best of our knowledge, no other lichen striatus case has been reported with bilateral distribution and such long-term persistence.

Lichen striatus: clinical and laboratory features of 115 children.

To analyze the clinical features, response to treatment, and follow-up of lichen striatus and any associated symptoms or disease, we designed a retrospective study involving 115 affected children at the Pediatric Dermatology Unit of the Department of Dermatology of the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy. Between January 1989 and January 2000 we diagnosed lichen striatus in 37 boys and 78 girls (mean age 4 years 5 months). We studied their family history and the season of onset, morphology, distribution, extent, duration, histopathology, and treatment of their lichen striatus. We found that

Lichen striatus: description of 89 cases in children.

Lichen striatus (LS) is a benign, self-limited, linear, inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology that usually affects children. We analyzed 89 cases in regard to age of appearance, sex, race, symptoms, seasonal incidence, localization of lesions and affected side of the body, and presence of atopy. Lesions predominated on the inferior limbs, with no preponderance of any age, and were asymptomatic in the majority of the instances. There was no difference in the incidence of LS in regard to the season of the year. A possible association of lichen sclerosus with atopy and pruritus was observed

Lichenoid eruptions in children.

Lichenoid eruptions are quite common in children and can result from many different origins. In most instances the precise mechanism of disease is not known, although it is usually believed to be immunologic in nature. Certain disorders are common in children, whereas others more often affect the adult population. Lichen striatus, lichen nitidus, Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, and lichen spinulosus are examples of lichenoid lesions that are more common in children than adults. Distinguishing these diseases is necessary for prediction of the course of the eruption and for optimal management. In most

Lichen striatus in adults or 'adult blaschkitis'?. There is no need for a new naming.

BACKGROUND: Lichen striatus (LS) is a well-known acquired linear inflammatory dermatosis. In 1990, Grosshans and Marot introduced the term 'adult blaschkitis' (AB), describing an eruption similar to LS occurring in an adult (adult LS). Does there really exist a new entity or a need for a new naming? OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Two new cases of adult LS are described and the data from 16 earlier cases (12 AB and 4 adult LS) are reviewed. RESULTS: The analysis of 18 adult patients with an acquired inflammatory blaschkolinear eruption reveals that females are affected two times as frequently as male

Periappendageal lichen nitidus: report of a case.

BACKGROUND: The histology of lichen nitidus has been described previously but a follicular variant has not been emphasized. METHOD: We report a case of lichen nitidus with periappendageal inflammation resulting in histologic similarities to lichen striatus. RESULTS: This case extends the spectrum of histologic findings in lichen nitidus and shows overlap in the distribution of the inflammatory infiltrate in lichen nitidus and lichen striatus.

Lichen striatus. Histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: Lichen striatus (LS) is a papulosquamous disorder with a distinctive linear distribution. The linearity has been shown to correspond in many cases to the pattern of Blaschko's lines. The etiology is unknown. LS can usually be identified by clinical history and histology of typical lesions. However, the histologic features are diverse and some have stated they are nonspecific. METHODS: In an effort to identify those characteristic features, we have reviewed the routine slides in 37 cases for their diagnostic criteria. Ten cases were studied further by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS

A case of lichen striatus following Blaschko lines.

We present a case of lichen striatus (LS) in a 36-year-old woman with skin lesions on the right side of the chest distributed along Blaschko lines that showed a swirling s-shaped pattern. The differential diagnosis of LS includes a variety of nevoid and acquired conditions following Blaschko lines, particularly acquired relapsing self-healing Blaschko dermatitis. The extent to which these 2 conditions overlap remains contentious.

Lichen striatus with nail involvement.

A 13-year-old boy of lichen striatus (LS) with nail changes is reported. Nail involvement in LS is rare. Nail LS is to be considered if--longitudinal ridges and splitting localized to one portion of the nail, single nail involvement and presence of skin lesions near the nail.

Multiple lichen striatus--an unusual presentation.

A 2-year-old mare child presented with multiple hypopigmented, flat topped papules with a bilateral distribution along the lines of Blaschko. A 7-year-old girl presented with multiple hypopigmented macules arranged linearly along the left upper and lower limb and also on the back along the lines of Blaschko. Three discrete lines in three distinct anatomical areas in a case of lichen striatus do not appear to have been described.

Linear eruptions of the nose in childhood: a form of lichen striatus?

We report four children with linear eruptions on the nose, with overlapping features of lichen striatus and linear cutaneous lupus erythematosus. However, linear lupus erythematosus has rarely been reported, and lichen striatus, although classically linear, rarely affects the face. The linear distribution of lesions from the glabella to the ala nasi may represent distribution following Blaschko's lines.

[Lichen striatus: evaluation of histologic criteria in 13 cases].

Lichen striatus (LS) is an uncommon dermatosis that generally affects children. Sometimes biopsy is required to assess the diagnosis. It is usually mentioned that LS has no specific histopathological criteria. Recently Gianotti et al., in 50% of the examined cases, found clues to the diagnosis. We have evaluated 13 biopsies of children affected by LS, in order to evaluate histopathological criteria to allow a diagnosis. The features nearly constantly present (12/13) in each specimen were focally band-like lymphocytic infiltrate with variable exocytosis and necrotic keratinocytes within the epi

Lichen striatus: clinical features and follow-up in 12 patients.

Lichen striatus (LS) is an uncommon disease of unknown origin characterised by a linear inflammatory papular eruption with spontaneous regression. We here review a series of 12 consecutive cases of LS. Diagnosis was supported by histological examination. Ten of our 12 patients were children aged 6 months to 12 years. The male gender predominated by 9:3. The lower limb was involved more often than the upper limb and trunk. The duration of the disease until regression ranged from 4 months to 4 years (median, 12 months). Postinflammatory hypopigmentation was noted in 5, and hyperpigmentation in 4

[Lichen striatus or Blaschkitis in the adults. Variations of the same entity?].

A 64-year-old woman presented with extensive erythematous papulosquamous lesions along the lines of Blaschko on the right half of the trunk and the right leg. The clinical and histological features led to the diagnosis of lichen striatus, a dermatosis which usually appears during childhood. Treatment with acitretin led to marked improvement. Lichen striatus and its differential diagnoses--particularly "blaschkitis of adulthood" as first described in 1990--are discussed.

The most common dermatological localisation in psoriasis in the child; it is seen as trachyonychia, pitting, and occasionally pachyonychia. Ingrowth of the large toenail is a common problem, whether due to congenital hypertrophy of the lateral nail folds of the hallux in the newborn, to congenital malalignment of the nail of the big toe, or to a juvenile ingrown nail. Many other nail disorders are observed in the child: parakeratosis pustulosa, nail lichen, lichen striatus, melanonychia, dermatophyte onycho
