Lichen striatus associated with psoriasis vulgaris treated with oral acitretin.

Lichen striatus (LS) is an uncommon dermatosis of unknown etiology that presents as a continuous or interrupted linear band of pink, tan, red or skin-colored papules in a blaschkoid distribution. The lesions are generally solitary and unilateral, but unusual extensive cases with multiple and bilateral lesions have been also described. Albeit LS is typically an asymptomatic and self-limited dermatosis, it may cause a significant psychological distress in some patients, thus requiring an appropriate therapy. Topical steroid is the most commonly used treatment but it is not always effective. We r

Bilateral onychodystrophy in a boy with a history of isolated lichen striatus.

Lichen striatus (LS) is a relatively rare and self-limited linear dermatosis of unknown etiology. It primarily affects children, with more than 50% of cases occurring in patients aged 5 to 15 years. The case of a 2-year-old boy who presented for evaluation of a nonpruritic linear rash on the left side of the lower abdomen of 3 weeks' duration is discussed. A diagnosis of lichen striatus (LS) was made and the lesions completely resolved within 6 months. At 5 years of age, the patient returned for evaluation of bluish discoloration and thinning of the nails on the left middle and ring fingers, w

A healthy tension in translational research.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Harrington Discovery Institute for the honor of being named the inaugural recipient of the Harrington Prize for Innovation in Medicine. I accept this distinction with a deep sense of gratitude and debt to my mentors, trainees, colleagues, collaborators, patients, and family. Moments of recognition such as this are rare, savored, and sustaining. They also invariably provoke personal reflection about what exactly is being recognized. If something innovative truly stands apart in my work, I

Three cases of lichen nitidus associated with various cutaneous diseases.

Lichen nitidus (LN) is an uncommon, usually asymptomatic cutaneous eruption characterized by the presence of multiple, small, flesh-colored papules. The epidemiologic and pathophysiologic characteristics of LN have not yet been defined. Furthermore, LN has rarely been described in association with other cutaneous diseases. We herein report 3 cases of LN associated with various cutaneous diseases, including lichen striatus, oral lichen planus, and psoriasis vulgaris.

Interface dermatitis.

Interface dermatitis includes diseases in which the primary pathology involves the dermo-epidermal junction. The salient histological findings include basal cell vacuolization, apoptotic keratinocytes (colloid or Civatte bodies), and obscuring of the dermo-epidermal junction by inflammatory cells. Secondary changes of the epidermis and papillary dermis along with type, distribution and density of inflammatory cells are used for the differential diagnoses of the various diseases that exhibit interface changes. Lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, lichen planus, graft versus host disease, eryth

A case of linear porokeratosis treated with photodynamic therapy with confocal microscopy surveillance.

Linear porokeratosis (LP) is a rare clinical porokeratosis variant, which typically presents at birth, but can also develop in adulthood. Differential diagnosis includes linear lichen planus, lichen striatus, linear verrucous epidermal nevus, incontinentia pigmenti and linear Darier's disease. An LP lesion has an increased risk of transformation into a squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma. The treatment of LP is contradictory and disappointing in general. We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with multiple reddish-brown macules and depressions on the medial aspect of her right arm

Blaschko-linear manifestations of polygenic inflammatory diseases: analysis of 17 cases.

BACKGROUND: Blaschko-Linear Manifestations of Multifactorial Polygenic Diseases (BLMMPD) are rare. Their underlying pathogenesis is not known but genetic mosaicism is supposed to be involved. OBJECTIVES: To describe a series of patients with BLMMPD and to establish a meaningful classification of these manifestations. MATERIALS & METHODS: We retrospectively retrieved the records of all the patients with Blaschko-linear lesions followed at our institution between 1994 and 2007. Only well-documented cases of BLMMPD were included. RESULTS: 17 cases were reviewed (11 men and 6 women, mean age 42

Giant inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus: successfully treated with full thickness excision and skin grafting.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a pruritic, erythematous scaly epidermal nevus which follows a Blaschko's lines. Lichen striatus, linear Darier disease, linear porokeratosis, linear lichen planus, linear psoriasis, and the verrucous stage of incontinentia pigmenti may all have similar clinical presentations as the linear verrucous epidermal nevus. ILVEN can be distinguished from true nevoid psoriasis by pruritus and lack of response to antipsoriatic treatments. Various therapeutic modalities have been described, but no one therapy has been successful consistently. Thou

Vulvar and perianal condyloma superimposed inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus: a case report and review of the literature.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a benign cutaneous hamartoma characterized by intensely erythematous, pruritic, and inflammatory papules that occur as linear bands along the lines of Blaschko. There is a considerable clinical and histological resemblance between ILVEN and linear psoriasis, lichen striatus, linear lichen planus, and invasion of epidermal nevus by psoriasis. The pathogenesis of ILVEN is unknown. It is regarded as a genetic dyskeratotic disease reflecting genetic mosaicism. Here, a case of vulvar and perianal condyloma superimposed ILVEN is presented.

Lichen striatus occurring after allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in an adult with aplastic anemia.

Lichens striatus (LS) is an acquired, self-limiting inflammatory dermatosis that follows the lines of Blaschko. The etiology of the eruption is unknown, but several theories have been proposed with focus on environmental factors, viral infection, cutaneous injury, hypersensitivity, and genetic predisposition. We describe a 19-year-old woman who developed a unilateral linear eruption 17 months after allogenic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Histopathology revealed features, which were consistent with LS. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is the first case describing the appe

[Lichen striatus with nail abnormality is a self-limiting condition].

A six year-old boy was referred with an asymptomatic linear rash on his left arm and a nail involvement of a fingernail on his left hand. Multiple small erythematous papules coalescing into a linear band extending to the thumb with nail abnormality were noted on the left arm. A diagnosis of lichen striatus was established clinically. The condition has spontaneous remission, although the course of the disease is prolonged when nail involvement exists. The condition is benign and there is no need to perform biopsy.

Effective topical combination therapy for treatment of lichen striatus in children: a case series and review.

Lichen striatus (LS) is an uncommon linear dermatosis that is primarily seen in children from 4 months to 15 years of age. While some of these eruptions are asymptomatic, others can be quite pruritic. In darker-skinned individuals, post-inflammatory hypopigmentation can be significant and may provide a cause for concern for the patients and/or their parents. In our case series of 4 patients, we observed rapid resolution of LS by combining a topical retinoid with a topical steroid. To our knowledge, this is the first report of successful treatment with this kind of combination therapy in the En

Facial lichen striatus in children: retracing the lines of Blaschko.

We report seven patients with facial lichen striatus along the lines of Blaschko who presented to our pediatric dermatology unit between 2003 and 2009. The mean age of diagnosis was 4.6 years (range 2.5-9 years). Three of the cases were associated with atopic dermatitis, and one case presented with vitiligo. In the six patients for whom we have follow-up, all lesions resolved without pigmentary changes in an average of 11 months. This case series describes the distribution, presentation, and natural history of lichen striatus along facial lines of Blaschko. From our experience, clinical diagno

Concurrence of lichen striatus and localised pityriasis rosea: Cutaneous mosaicism.

Cutaneous mosaicism has always been an intriguing subject. A 15-year-old boy presented to us with a unilateral band of lesions of pityriasis rosea and lichen striatus. The case is discussed in the light of the concept of genetic mosaicism.

Blaschkitis in children - a new entity?

Blaschkitis is an acquired, rare dermatitis that follows the lines of Blaschko. Many consider blaschkitis as a variant of lichen striatus, although authors felt that it is a separate entity. A 2½-year-old girl presented with multiple grouped papules along the lines of Blaschko on her trunk. The main differences to lichen striatus are illustrated. Our case supports the hypothesis that blaschkitis is an entity of its own.
