Quality of Life and Burden of Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis in Adult Patients Within the Asia-Pacific Region: A Cross-sectional Survey.

INTRODUCTION: The burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) is significant, with a substantial impact on quality of life (QoL). This cross-sectional study aimed to ascertain the burden of AD, its impact on QoL, and associated costs. METHODS: Patients with moderate-to-severe AD were enrolled from eight territories, namely Hong Kong, India, Japan, Mainland China, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. After screening was performed and informed consent was obtained, eligible participants were asked to provide responses on their AD symptoms, severity, treatment, and out-of-pocket costs via an onlin

Causal Effects of Asthma on Upper Airway Diseases and Allergic Diseases: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is associated with upper airway diseases and allergic diseases; however, the causal effects need to be investigated further. Thus, we performed this two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore and measure the causal effects of asthma on allergic rhinitis (AR), vasomotor rhinitis (VMR), allergic conjunctivitis (AC), atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic urticaria (AU). METHODS: The data for asthma, AR, VMR, AC, AD, and AU were obtained from large-scale genome-wide association studies summarized recently. We defined single-nucleotide polymorphisms satisfying

What would have happened anyway? Population data source considerations when estimating background incident rates of adverse events following immunisation to inform vaccine safety.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding background incident rates of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) is essential to rapidly detect, evaluate, respond to, and communicate about vaccine safety concerns, especially for new vaccines. Creating estimates based on geographic specific population level data is increasingly important, as new AEFI presentations will be subject to the same local influences of population demography, exposures, health system variations and level of health care sought. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of hospital admissions, emergency department prese

Evaluation of the seroprevalence and the demographic and clinical findings of fascioliasis patients in the Dicle River Basin in Turkey: a nine-year experience at a university hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica are liver trematodes that cause fascioliasis in humans and animals. In Turkey, the medical importance of fascioliasis has been increasing in humans, and it continues to cause great economic loss in the field of animal husbandry. Therefore, it is important to diagnose fascioliasis quickly and reliably. The aim of this study is to show that the ELISA test is a reliable and specific method for diagnosing fascioliasis both in the early stage and in the acute stage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 640 individuals aged 7-75 years who showed o

Associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and allergic diseases: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: In some observational studies, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has been linked to allergic diseases, but the findings are debatable. This study aimed to determine whether attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is causally related to allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, pollen allergy, allergic urticaria, and allergic conjunctivitis using the two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach. METHODS: We did a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study, which chose single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are highly associated with attention-deficit/hyperactiv

The associations between asthma and common comorbidities: a comprehensive Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease and is often associated with multiple comorbidities. The causal relationship between asthma and these comorbidities is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between genetically predicted asthma and common comorbidities. METHODS: After searching PubMed and GWAS summary statistics, we identified 26 comorbidities of asthma. The causal relationship between asthma and comorbidities was assessed in two independent GWASs by bidirectional Mendelian randomization, followed by validation of the results using a multivariate Men

The causal association of polyunsaturated fatty acids with allergic disease: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have reported a potential association of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) levels with allergic disease risk and the possible benefit of PUFAs supplementation on allergic disease prevention. This study was performed to estimate the genetic association between PUFAs and allergic diseases using the method of both univariable and multivariable two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: As indicators of the PUFAs levels, we included the omega-3, omega-6, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), linoleic acid (LA), and the ratio of omega-6 to o

Acute urticarial rash after COVID-19 vaccination containing Polysorbate 80.

We present the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian woman, who developed an acute urticarial rash after the second dose of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination with Oxford-AstraZeneca. Though the most common cutaneous adverse reactions to vaccines are non-allergic, we believe the rash may represent an immediate hypersensitivity type I reaction against the vaccine excipient Polysorbate 80 (Pol80), configuring an acute allergic urticaria. Skin prick test with Pol80, were performed and resulted positive, confirming the role of Pol80 in eliciting immediate hypersensitivity in our patient. Of

[Omalizumab: Beyond anti-IgE properties].

INTRODUCTION: Omalizumab is used as a treatment for severe allergic asthma. Its intended mechanism of action is based on its anti-IgE proprieties. However, recent studies have highlighted other mechanisms of action. STATE OF THE ART: Omalizumab treatment is associated with a decrease in the number of dendritic cells, T and B lymphocytes and eosinophils. This anti-inflammatory activity is characterized by a decrease in the levels of several cytokines involved in the recruitment, activation and survival of eosinophils and mastocytes, and in a Th2 orientation of the immune response. A modulation

Treating IgE-mediated diseases via targeting IgE-expressing B cells using an anti-CεmX antibody.

Targeting the IgE pathway is a clinically validated strategy for treating IgE-mediated diseases. Omalizumab, an anti-IgE antibody, which binds to free IgE and prevents the binding of IgE to FcεRI on mast cells and basophils has been approved for severe persistent allergic asthma and chronic spontaneous (idiopathic) urticaria. The therapeutic efficacy of anti-IgE has also been reported in allergic rhinitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, latex allergy, atopic dermatitis, allergic urticaria, anaphylaxis, and others. Anti-CεmX, which binds to membrane-bound IgE (mIgE) on IgE-switched B

Atopic Dermatitis and Allergic Urticaria: Cutaneous Manifestations of Immunodeficiency.

Atopic dermatitis and allergic urticaria are common conditions of the skin that can also be the presenting symptoms of uncommon diseases. Defects leading to immunodeficiency may be associated with atopic dermatitis or allergic urticaria. Unusually severe or otherwise atypical presentations of atopic dermatitis or allergic urticaria may lead to clinical suspicion of an underlying immunodeficiency.

[DRUGS-INDUCED URTICARIA AND ANGIOEDEMA].

Drug-induced urticaria and/or angioedema is a frequent issue encountered in family medicine. A specific collection of the anamnesis and of the general context is very important to appreciate the involved mechanism, allergic or not, and potential cofactors. If in doubt about an allergic mechanism, tests will be conducted, mostly under a hospital setting. Bradykinin-mediated angioedema, so much rare than histamine-mediated one, has to be known, because it is potentially lethal. It is often iatrogenic (ACE inhibitors especially). At the end of the allergology work-up, a course of action is propos

Cardiac urticaria caused by eucleid allergen.

Urticaria is a common allergic diseases, which involve respiratory and digestive system being suffered in some population. Yet, relatively little research has been done on the adverse effect on the heart. We did this research to examine the correlation between the abnormality of ECG in the patients with acute allergic urticaria and the antigen of eucleid. The antigen (allergen of eucleid and other allergens) was used to test the patients with acute allergic urticaria by skin prick test and electrocardiogram was employed to examine the patients with strong positive (moth & caterpillar) eucleid

Omalizumab, an anti-immunoglobulin E antibody: state of the art.

A large number of trials show that the anti-immunoglobulin (Ig) E antibody omalizumab is very effective in patients with severe allergic asthma. This is acknowledged in consensus documents. The drug also has a good safety profile and a pharmacoeconomic advantage due to a reduction in the number of hospitalizations for asthma attacks. In recent years, some studies have shown that omalizumab is effective also in nonallergic asthma. Effects on the complex signaling mechanisms leading to activation of effector cells and to mediator release may account for this outcome. Indeed, omalizumab has been

Chlorhexidine is a widely used antiseptic and disinfectant in medical and non-medical environments. Compared to its ubiquitous use, allergic contact dermatitis from chlorhexidine has rarely been reported and so its sensitization rate seems to be low. Chlorhexidine has been used for more than 50 years but it was only in the last two decades, that reports of immediate- type reactions to chlorhexidine were seen. Reactions ranging from localized urticaria to anaphylactic shock and hypersensitivity reactions, including delayed hypersensitivity reactions such as contact dermatitis, fixed drug erupti

[A challenge for pediatrician: non allergic urticaria].

In general population about 15-20% of subjects have suffered from one episode of urticaria-angioedema syndrome in their life. The etiology of his condition is various and multifactorial. In children the principal cause of acute urticaria is infection, while physical factors are the main agents of chronic urticaria. All those conditions which lack an etiology are named chronic idiopathic urticaria, but in reality a considerable number of these patients is affected by a chronic autoimmune urticaria. For this reason, screening out the most frequent causes of chronic urticaria, it's useful to know
