In spite of popular beliefs, the relationship between eczema and food allergy still puzzles researchers and clinicians, which in part is due to the variety of mechanisms involved in various types of allergy. One has to realize the differences between hypersensitivity reactions to food proteins (allergens capable of initiating immediate hypersensitivity or immune complex reactions) and low-molecular weight compounds (haptens that may initiate cytotoxic reactions or delayed-type allergy). Hardly doubted is the role of IgE specific to food proteins in anaphylactic reactions and allergic urticaria

Several guidelines for urticaria and angioedema have been published in Europe and United States since 1997. General principles for diagnosis and treatments of them are similar. However, each guideline has its own characteristics and shows differences in areas such as the coverage of urticaria subtypes, nomenclatures, and hierarchy of the medications. In Japan, the Japanese Dermatological Association (JDA) published its first guideline for urticaria and angioedema in 2005. It established a new classification of urticaria and angioedema together with the definition of each subtype. It emphasized

INTRODUCTION: Chronic urticaria (CU) is one of the toughest problems. The main difficulty is the search for an etiological factor in 70-90% of cases the cause of chronic urticaria remains unclear. In the development and persistence of CU recently paid great importance to the role of Helicobacter pylori infection (HP), which is the most common bacterial infection in humans. However, the influence of HP eradication on the course of CU is poorly understood.
AIM: to improve the diagnosis and treatment of urticaria patients with Helicobacter-associated diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Acute anaphylaxis due to chicken meat is very rare; only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl, with a past history of allergic urticaria due to eggs, who presented immediately after ingestion of lightly grilled chicken meat with facial edema, dysphonia, acute dyspnoea and a feeling of suffocation. A few months later, the patient developed asthma in the vicinity of poultry and after contact with chicken feathers.

The article gives a critical review of the main epidemiological features of allergic diseases, their frequency, distribution and etiologic background as well as the possibilities of prevention and control, based on current literature. Statistical data for Croatia, collected by the Croatian National Institute of Public Health, are used to present actual epidemiological situation in Croatia. Basic descriptive epidemiological methods were used to express age and sex distribution, etc. In comments and review of preventive measures, our own epidemiological experiences and experience acquired on cre

BACKGROUND: Urticaria is the disease that has the highest impact on quality of life and requires the most visits to the emergency room.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical presentation of acute urticaria in children referred to the paediatric emergency room of our hospital and to define possible related aetiologies.
METHODS: We included 814 children consecutively referred to the emergency room between January 2006 and December 2007 with a diagnosis of acute urticaria, isolated or associated with other clinical symptoms.
RESULTS: Only 2.0% of the cases studied were associated with severe

Numerous professional or leisure activities expose individuals to plants susceptible to provoke contact allergies. The immunological mechanisms that are responsible for these ailments (delayed cellular reaction linked to allergic dermatitis or immediate IgE mediated reaction of the allergic urticaria) differ according to the plant families involved. A differential diagnosis must be made in the case of the even more frequent non-allergic reactions implying either a simple mechanical irritation, or a contact with toxic substances. The role of UV (phytophotodermatosis), as well as the contact all

BACKGROUND: The association between asthma and anaphylaxis remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain, in a managed care organization in northern California, the association of asthma and asthma severity with future risk of anaphylactic shock and other selected allergy diagnoses.
METHODS: Using electronic data and validated algorithms, we assembled a cohort of 526,406 patients who met the criteria for asthma between 1996 and 2006 and a referent cohort (with no utilization for asthma) individually matched on age, sex, and race/ethnicity. In each cohort, 54% of patients were female and

Evolutionary Medicine can be useful when analysing the origin of disease and symptoms. Acute urticaria or anaphylaxis is bothersome and potentially life-threatening. We analyse this symptom-complex in the context of Gastro-allergic Anisakiasis (GAA), where the human is an incidental host for the cosmopolitan fish-nematode Anisakis simplex (A. simplex). The immunological response against this nematode resembles that against other helminths, but overt expression of allergic symptoms is by far more frequent in GAA. This could be due to the missing co-evolutionary relationship between host and par

This article offered an extensive description of the clinical and pathological features and time-course of the skin manifestations of toxic syndrome caused by denatured rapeseed oil, also known as toxic oil syndrome. This new condition occurred in Spain in 1981 and was due to the ingestion of rapeseed oil intended for industrial use that had been denatured with anilines and subsequently refined and sold fraudulently as olive oil. In total, 20,000 cases and 400 deaths were reported. The disease affected mainly women, particularly in the late stages. In the acute phase, the predominant skin mani

A mixture of neutral short-chain galactooligosaccharides (scGOS) and long-chain fructooligosaccharides (lcFOS) has been shown to reduce the incidence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and infectious episodes during the first 6 mo of life. This dual protection occurred through the intervention period. The present study evaluated if these protective effects were lasting beyond the intervention period. In a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, healthy term infants with a parental history of atopy were fed either a prebiotic-supplemented (8 g/L scGOS/lcFOS) or placebo-suppleme

BACKGROUND: The long-term effect of nutritional intervention with hydrolyzed infant formulas on allergy development has not been sufficiently evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: We performed a follow-up of the German Infant Nutritional Intervention study until 6 years of life to investigate the long-term allergy-preventive effect of 3 hydrolyzed infant formulas compared with cow's milk formula (CMF) in a randomized, double-blind trial.
METHODS: Between 1995 and 1998, 2252 newborns with atopic heredity were randomly assigned at birth to receive one of 4 blinded formulas: partially or extensively hydrolyzed

Koso-san (Xiang-Su-San in Chinese), a Kampo (Japanese herbal) medicine, is used clinically in East Asia for the treatment of depression-like symptoms associated with the initial stage of the common cold, allergic urticaria due to food ingestion, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, and autonomic imbalance. However, the antidepressant-like activity of Koso-san has never been evaluated scientifically. In this study, ddY mice subjected to a combination of forced swimming and chronic mild stresses were termed depression-like model mice. The degree of the depression-like st

BACKGROUND: Psychological comorbidity is a known aspect of allergic disease. However, there is recent evidence that a large proportion of allergic patients remains undiagnosed and untreated for psychological disease. In addition, the complexities of the anxiety-allergy relationship, i.e. differences for current and past disease, or differences among allergic disease types, are not well understood.
OBJECTIVES: To measure the level of anxiety in a large allergic population in France using a standardized measure, the State/Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).
METHODS: Allergy patients in France (n =

Vitiligo is a common, idiopathic, acquired, depigmenting disease characterized by loss of normal melanin pigments in the skin. The most interesting treatment methods for extensive vitiligo involve psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy and ultraviolet (UV)-B phototherapy, particularly narrow-band UV-B. In this randomized and comparative study, we investigated the safety and efficacy of narrow band ultraviolet B as monotherapy and in combination with topical calcipotriol in the treatment of generalized vitiligo. Of the 40 vitiligo patients enrolled in the study, 15 were treated with the cal

The correlation of pollen allergens, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and animal dender was assessed during a two-year period. Results of skin prick test, total and specific IgE UniCAP tests were compared in atopic patients (AP) with the following diagnoses: atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic bronchitis or asthma, allergic urticaria and angioedema. The study included total and specific IgE (in vitro) tests to allergen mixtures (grass, tree, weed) or to single allergens of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p), cat and dog fur, feather, etc. Comparison of ski

BACKGROUND: The potential of extensively or partially hydrolyzed formulas to reduce the risks for allergies is controversial.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the preventive effect of differently hydrolyzed formulas compared with cow's milk formula (CMF) in high-risk infants.
METHODS: Between 1995 and 1998, 2252 infants with a hereditary risk for atopy were enrolled in the German Infant Nutritional Intervention Study and randomly assigned at birth to one of 4 blinded formulas: CMF, partially hydrolyzed whey formula, extensively hydrolyzed whey formula, and extensively hydrolyzed casein formula

INTRODUCTION: The unexpected appearance of acute urticaria during the course of drug treatment gives rise to the following question: is it an allergic urticaria (due to an immediate hypersensitivity: IgE mediated specific immunity) or is it pseudo-allergic? We report our findings in an immuno-allergological study of patients who were sent for drug intolerance which presented as immediate hypersensivity (urticaria, angiooedema, anaphylactic shock).
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted including all the patients who were sent to the unit for urticaria or angiooedema type drug intolerance.

Chronic urticaria is frequent. Apart from physical and allergic urticaria, a cause is infrequently identified. A lot of causes are suspected but frequently not well documented. As a consequence, very different diagnostic recommendations are proposed to the clinician. We have performed an extensive review of the literature, in order to determine the quality of evidence for each suspected etiology. The search has been performed in the following data base Embase, Pascal, Cochrane Library and Medline, on a ten years period. It has been completed with data from the selected articles. Infectious dis

Allergy is a very uncommon cause of diarrhoea. Other mechanisms, medical diseases and infections, psychological and pseudoallergic reactions, intolerance reactions, and enzyme defects/deficiency, and many other conditions are much more common. If food allergy is strongly suspected diagnosis may be difficult, even for allergologists, as it requires a mosaic of history, skin and in vitro tests, diagnostic diet, and even provocation tests. It is important to recognise diarrhoea "accompanying" allergic urticaria and anaphylactic reactions as part of the symptomatology of the primary dermatological
