Lassa fever (LF) is a serious acute viral hemorrhagic illness that is endemic to West Africa where it affects an estimated two million people and results in up to 10000 deaths each year. The disease is caused by the Lassa virus (LASV), part of the Arenaviridae family, and is primarily transmitted through contact with urine or feces of infected Mastomys natalensis rodents. Human-to-human transmission, particularly in healthcare and community settings, further amplifies the risk of spread. Since its discovery in 1969, LF continues to be a neglected tropical disease with significant health impact

Measles encephalitis results in devastating epilepsia partialis and/or mortality in the majority of children treated with intense chemotherapy for hematolymphoid malignancies. Although many agents have been studied in the treatment of Measles encephalitis with variable results, there are no effective strategies to mitigate the significant morbidity associated with measles encephalitis till date and treatment has remained largely supportive. In this report, a novel combination of antivirals have been shown to abrogate the morbid sequelae of Measles encephalitis with eventual complete recovery i

"Investigation of Immune Amnesia Following Measles Infection in Select African Regions" (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT06153979) is a prospective, observational, longitudinal study being conducted in two West African countries; Guinea and Mali. Acute measles virus (MeV) infection has been shown to result in a loss of pre-existing immunity (immune amnesia). MeV-induced immune amnesia has not been studied in West Africa where continual MeV outbreaks occur. Additionally previous studies have relied on naturally occurring exposures to viruses to examine the immune systems ability to create ant

BACKGROUND: Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare complication of the measles infection. SSPE is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that causes encephalitis, leading to the demyelination of neurons in the brain. It affects the brain in 9 months or less and hence subacute, causing encephalitis and lesions in the entire brain, so the term panencephalitis is used.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed and Google Scholar starting in April 2024, and all relevant articles were extracted for this review.
RESULTS: A rece

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and autoimmune encephalitis (AE) are distinct clinical entities, each characterized by unique management strategies and prognosis. SSPE represents a late sequela of persistent measles infection, with progressive cognitive decline, behavioral alterations, motor function deterioration and myoclonus. In contrast, AE is an inflammatory disorder of central nervous system, typically presenting with constellation of neurological and psychiatric symptoms. In pediatric AE, seizures, movement disorders, and focal neurological deficits are more prominent than be

BACKGROUND: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare but fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by persistent measles virus infection. After a significant measles outbreak in 2000-2001, the Republic of Korea implemented a nationwide measles elimination program, which led to a dramatic reduction in measles incidence. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of these measles elimination efforts on the incidence of SSPE in the Republic of Korea.
METHODS: This nationwide, population-based retrospective cohort study identified patients newly diagnosed with measles and SSPE between 2007

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is the result of a chronic infection of the central nervous system caused by a mutated measles virus. We present a case of SSPE in a 19-year-old female with congenital HIV-infection. The patient has been using antiretroviral therapy regularly since she was 4 years old. At the age of 15, she contracted measles of moderate severity. At the age 17, she had the HIV viral load < 20 copies/ml and the CD4 count 420 cells/μl. Three years after measles, bilateral necrotizing retinitis developed, and five months later, myoclonic seizures of the left limbs. S

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the measles virus. An affected child typically presents with cognitive decline and abnormal movements, described as myoclonia. Early diagnosis is crucial for prognosis, but can be challenging because early symptoms may be subtle, and EEG findings are not always typical. We propose that better description and documentation of motor symptoms may facilitate earlier recognition of SSPE.A 4-year-old boy presented with cognitive decline and motor symptoms evolving over 6 months. The patient had a history of measles a

Measles is a highly transmissible viral disease that is preventable through vaccination. Despite global initiatives, outbreaks persist, demonstrating the need for high immunization coverage. Spread occurs via respiratory droplets and airborne particles, reinforcing the need for herd immunity. Symptoms include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, and in rare cases, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Diagnosis relies on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serology tests. Two doses of th

BackgroundSubacute sclerosing panencephalitis is typically characterized by myoclonic jerks, cognitive decline, movement disorders, and periodic complexes on electroencephalography (EEG). Although myoclonus is a hallmark feature, other seizure types including generalized/focal seizures are less commonly described in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. We aimed to study seizure frequency, types, spectrum of epilepsy syndromes, and atypical EEG findings among children with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.Materials and MethodsA retrospective chart review of 100 children (aged 1-18 years) dia

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare, fatal complication of measles, manifesting years after infection due to persistent measles virus in the central nervous system. An 11-year-old Syrian boy with prior measles and measles - mumps - rubella (MMR) vaccination developed progressive encephalopathy and a vegetative state. MRI showed diffuse white matter, thalamic, and pontine changes; SSPE was confirmed post-mortem. This case emphasises the need for high MMR vaccine coverage and the importance of clinical awareness of rare infectious diseases in patients from crisis-affected countr

BACKGROUND: Primary Immunodeficiency disorders (PID) can increase the risk of severe COVID-19 and prolonged infection. This study investigates the duration of SARS-CoV-2 excretion and the genetic evolution of the virus in pediatric PID patients as compared to immunocompetent (IC) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 nasopharyngeal and 24 stool samples were obtained from five PID and ten IC children. RNA detection was performed using RT-qPCR, and whole-genome sequencing was conducted with the NexSeq 1000 platform. Data analysis used the nextflow/viralrecon pipeline. Hotspot amino aci

IMPORTANCE: Widespread childhood vaccination has eliminated many infectious diseases in the US. However, vaccination rates are declining, and there are ongoing policy debates to reduce the childhood vaccine schedule, which may risk reemergence of previously eliminated infectious diseases.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the number of cases and complications in the US under scenarios of declining childhood vaccination for measles, rubella, poliomyelitis, and diphtheria.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A simulation model was used to assess the importation and dynamic spread of vaccine-preventable in

Vaccine hesitancy threatens global health by diminishing herd immunity and permitting the return of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) including poliomyelitis, measles and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These infections carry short-term and long-term musculoskeletal consequences, such as paralysis, limb deformities, septic or reactive arthritis, osteomyelitis and chronic pain, that place an ever increasing burden on orthopaedic services. This narrative review synthesizes clinical and epidemiological evidence linking sub-optimal immunization to orthopaedic morbidity caused by major VPDs.

A 30-year-old man with recent diagnosis of HIV-infection was seen in the hospital, because of a 1-month history of swollen lips, painful oral mucosa ulcers, cervical lymph nodes and skin lesions. The medical history showed a previous patient contact with 10 subjects, with positivity for Monkeypox virus in 8 subjects. A week later, he began with lesions on the genitals, managed with acyclovir, and subsequent development of manifestations in the mouth and skin, with dissemination to the entire body. He was admitted to our clinic for increased volume in penis and scrotum, and a disseminated derma

Background: Prevention of an irreversible sequalae in neurosyphilis patients requires immediate high-dose intravenous benzylpenicillin administered for a prolonged period of time. However, life-threatening neutropenia has been reported as one of the complications following extended usage of benzylpenicillin. Case presentation: We report a 54-year-old male patient with HIV who developed high-dose benzylpenicillin-induced febrile neutropenia during neurosyphilis treatment. The patient developed a fever of up to 39.8 °C, severe leukopenia (<1 × 109/L), and neutropenia (0.2 × 109/L). He also prese

Vaccination is widely considered to be the pre-eminent public health achievement of modern history, but declining coverage resulting from vaccine hesitancy and from interruptions in immunization campaigns in geopolitically unstable regions threatens progress against vaccine-preventable diseases. The global burden of vaccine-preventable neurological diseases is substantial, resulting in acute and chronic complications as well as high case fatality rates. In recent years, outbreaks of dengue, poliomyelitis, measles, pertussis, meningococcal disease and Japanese encephalitis virus have been linke
