Cutaneous findings following COVID-19 vaccination: review of world literature and own experience.

There is growing evidence that not only the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) but also the COVID-19 vaccines can cause a variety of skin reactions. In this review article, we provide a brief overview on cutaneous findings that have been observed since the emerging mass COVID-19 vaccination campaigns all over the world. Unspecific injection-site reactions very early occurring after the vaccination are most frequent. Type I hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. urticaria, angio-oedema and anaphylaxis) likely due to allergy to ingredients may rarely occur but can be severe. Type IV hypersensitivity

Cutaneous adverse events related to COVID-19 vaccines: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of 867 patients.

Considering the emergency approval of the Food and Drug Administration for widespread use of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, evaluating potential vaccine-related adverse effects is critical as it will allow physicians to diagnose and manage these complications properly. In this descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, we evaluated the possible side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine from June 1, 2021 to June 21, 2021. The Iranian population is generally vaccinated with AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm, and Bharat vaccines. The continuous and categorical variables were

Pleomorphic Appearance of Breast Cancer Cutaneous Metastases.

Cutaneous metastases occur in approximately 10% of oncology patients as a feature of a persistent solid tumor or the harbinger of recurrent neoplastic disease. However, they can be the presenting manifestation of an unsuspected visceral malignancy in one percent of previously cancer-free individuals. Metastatic skin lesions from breast carcinoma are diverse in their appearance. The clinical presentation of cutaneous metastases in three women with breast cancer is described and both the morphology of skin metastases caused by breast carcinoma and the conditions that are mimicked by breast cance

Axillary Granular Parakeratosis.

We describe a case of an 85-year-old Caucasian female who presented to the dermatology clinic with pruritic, scaly hyperpigmented papules and plaques with surrounding erythema in the left axilla. Based on the history and physical examination, there was concern for possible varicella zoster infection, and the patient was started on valacyclovir 1000 mg three times daily for seven days. A shave biopsy was taken from the left axilla to confirm a diagnosis. Microscopic examination revealed compact hyperparakeratosis with keratohyalin granules throughout the parakeratotic stratum corneum as well as

Practical guidelines for the early diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome in primary healthcare.

Primary care physicians can play a crucial role by recognising Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in the early stages identifying those patients with the greatest probability of being diagnosed with SS. SS has a very specific epidemiological profile at presentation (female aged 30-50 years), which may aid an early diagnosis. Although the disease may be expressed in many guises, there are three predominant clinical presentations that should be considered as key clues to increased clinical suspicion (multiple symptoms of dryness, asthenia-polyalgia syndrome and systemic organ-specific manifestations). The

Tick-borne encephalitis related uveitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an infectious disease of the central nervous system caused by the TBE virus (TBEV), which is usually transmitted by a tick-bite, with increasing incidence in northeastern Europe and eastern Asia during the past decade. Ocular involvement has not been described in the literature to date. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old patient presented to the emergency department with occipital headaches and poor balance for 5 days. He reported a tick-bite 6 weeks before without erythema migrans followed by a flu-like syndrome. Serological testing was negative for

Figurate erythemas - update and diagnostic approach.

Figurate erythemas (FE) represent an etiopathophysiologically heterogeneous group of diseases defined by their characteristic annular erythematous skin lesions. Diagnosis is made primarily by clinical examination together with histological findings; often it is a diagnosis made by exclusion. While some authors discuss FE as clinical reaction pattern rather than distinct clinical entities, others identify four classic FE: erythema annulare centrifugum, erythema gyratum repens, erythema migrans and erythema marginatum. The differential diagnoses of FE are numerous and often challenging. We there

Prevalence of persistent symptoms after treatment for lyme borreliosis: A prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about long-lasting symptoms attributed to Lyme borreliosis (LB) are widespread in the Western world, while such symptoms are highly prevalent in the general population. METHODS: In the largest prospective study to date, adults with physician-confirmed LB were included at the start of antibiotic treatment. Primary outcomes, prevalence of persistent symptoms and symptom severity, were assessed using three-monthly standardised questionnaires during one year. Persistent symptoms were defined as impaired scores for fatigue (CIS, subscale fatigue), cognitive impairment (CFQ) or

Epidemiological Surveillance of Lyme Borreliosis in Bavaria, Germany, 2013-2020.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in Germany. Mandatory notification of acute LB manifestations (erythema migrans (EM), neuroborreliosis (NB), and Lyme arthritis (LA)) was implemented in Bavaria on 1 March 2013. We aimed to describe the epidemiological situation and to identify LB risk areas and populations. Therefore, we analyzed LB cases notified from March 2013 to December 2020 and calculated incidence (cases/100,000 inhabitants) by time, place, and person. Overall, 35,458 cases were reported during the study period (EM: 96.7%; NB: 1.7%; LA: 1.8%). The average inci

A 34-Year-Old Woman with Third-Degree Heart Block and Atrial Flutter Associated with Lyme Carditis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by bacteria of the Borrelia genus, endemic to the northeastern region of the United States. It typically presents with fevers, myalgias, and erythema migrans, but it can result in disseminated symptoms if left untreated. Lyme carditis is a rare, but potentially fatal complication of Lyme disease, occurring in up to 4-10% of untreated cases. Typically, it presents with atrioventricular conduction abnormalities, which resolve with intravenous antibiotics and temporary pacing if indicated. Diverse cardiac pathology, however, has been associat

Two-Tier Lyme Disease Serology in Children with Previous Lyme Disease.

Background: A history of Lyme disease can complicate the interpretation of Lyme disease serology in acutely symptomatic patients. Materials and Methods: We prospectively enrolled children undergoing evaluation for Lyme disease in the emergency department of one of eight participating Pedi Lyme Net centers. We selected symptomatic children with a Lyme disease history (definite, probable, or none) as well as an available research biosample. We defined a Lyme disease case with either an erythema migrans (EM) lesion or positive two-tier serology with compatible symptoms. Using a generalized estima

Nonspecific symptoms following infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato: A retrospective cohort study.

Whether infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) can cause nonspecific symptoms is a matter of controversy. We investigated whether individuals infected with B. burgdorferi sl develop unspecific symptoms more frequently than non-infected controls. Eighty-nine persons having presented with B. burgdorferi sl infection between 2015 and 2019 were asked to participate. The infection was defined as erythema migrans diagnosed either in the course of a previous study, during medical visits in the outpatient department, or as seroconversion in asymptomatic subjects. The control group consist

Forty Years of Evidence on the Efficacy and Safety of Oral and Injectable Antibiotics for Treating Lyme Disease of Adults and Children: A Network Meta-Analysis.

Lyme disease (LD) is a heavy public health burden. The most common manifestations of LD include erythema migrans (EM), Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB), and Lyme arthritis (LA). The efficacy and safety of antibiotics for treating LD is still controversial. Thus, we performed a network meta-analysis (NMA) to obtain more data and tried to solve this problem. We searched studies in the databases of Embase and PubMed from the date of their establishments until 22 April 2021. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to assess dichotomous outcomes. A total of 31 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 2,748 pat

mRNA vaccination induces tick resistance and prevents transmission of the Lyme disease agent.

Ixodes scapularis ticks transmit many pathogens that cause human disease, including Borrelia burgdorferi. Acquired resistance to I. scapularis due to repeated tick exposure has the potential to prevent tick-borne infectious diseases, and salivary proteins have been postulated to contribute to this process. We examined the ability of lipid nanoparticle–containing nucleoside-modified mRNAs encoding 19 I. scapularis salivary proteins (19ISP) to enhance the recognition of a tick bite and diminish I. scapularis engorgement on a host and thereby prevent B. burgdorferi infection. Guinea pigs were imm

Acute neuroborreliosis presenting with severe hyponatremia: a case report.

A 79-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted to the hospital with a 1-week history of general deterioration, describing malaise, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Concomitantly, she presented with urinary retention. Laboratory tests revealed severe hyponatremia secondary to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Patient reported a tick bite 1 month earlier, followed by erythema migrans. The diagnosis of Lyme disease was immediately suspected and confirmed by positive IgM and IgG serology. Symptoms and electrolyte disturbances completely resolved with a 2-week

Seasonality of Acute Lyme Disease in Children.

Due to the life cycle of its vector, Lyme disease has known seasonal variation. However, investigations focused on children have been limited. Our objective was to evaluate the seasonality of pediatric Lyme disease in three endemic regions in the United States. We enrolled children presenting to one of eight Pedi Lyme Net participating emergency departments. Cases were classified based on presenting symptoms: early (single erythema migrans (EM) lesion), early-disseminated (multiple EM lesions, headache, cranial neuropathy, or carditis), or late (arthritis). We defined a case of Lyme disease by

Clinical and diagnostic manifestations of tickborne mixed infection in combination with COVID-19.

The coexistence of various pathogens inside the patient's body is one of the poorly studied and current issues. The aim of the study is to identify the relationship between the indicators of complex laboratory diagnostics and the clinical manifestations of a mixed disease during subsequent infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus using the example of a case of chronic encephalitis-borreliosis infection. Seven blood serum samples were collected from the patient over the course of a year. For the etiological verification of the causative agents of TBE, Lyme disease and COVID-19, the methods of ELISA
