Trellis systems ameliorate heat damage by regulating canopy temperature, photosynthetic efficiency and leaf microstructure of grapevine.

INTRODUCTION: Global warming has made heat stress a major constraint on grapevine growth and grape production. This study aimed to evaluate the heat tolerance of three prevalent trellis systems-V-shaped (VT), upward-trained pendulous (U-PT), and H-shaped (HT)-for Vitis labruscana × V. vinifera 'Shine Muscat'. We specifically tested the hypothesis that U-PT enhances heat tolerance by optimizing canopy structure to mitigate high-temperature stress, thereby alleviating its negative impacts on stomatal function, chloroplast integrity, and photosynthetic performance. METHODS: Under summer rain-she

Sun Tattoos and Social Media: A Behavioral Dermatology Perspective on Emerging Photodamage Trends.

Sun tattoos, also referred to as patterned sunburn lines, have recently emerged as a visible consequence of uneven ultraviolet (UV) exposure, increasingly shared on social media platforms, particularly by adolescents and young adults. These patterns arise from partial photoprotection by clothing, accessories, or stickers and reflect acute UV-induced inflammation and DNA damage. Although often trivialized or aestheticized online, repeated sunburns contribute to cumulative photodamage, photoaging, pigmentary disorders, and increased risk of skin cancer. This commentary examines sun tattoo lines

Keratinocyte transport of notoginsenoside R1 via ABCG2: A novel mechanism for RNA N6-methyladenosine modification in UVB induced skin sunburn injury.

UVB radiation, a major environmental carcinogen, induces cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and contributes to the development of squamous cell carcinoma. The RNA N6-methyladenosine modification (m6A) plays a critical role in regulating the DNA damage response. This study demonstrates that notoginsenoside R1 (NGR1), a bioactive ginsenoside derived from Panax notoginseng, protects against UVB induced skin sunburn injury. ABCG2 was identified as a key epidermal transporter responsible for the efflux of NGR1 from keratinocytes, revealing a previously unrecognized function of this efflux pump: the capa

Spectral characterization of three wearable electronic ultraviolet radiation dosimeters.

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses significant public health risks, including DNA damage and skin-related pathologies. This necessitates accurate studies and quantification of UV-radiation exposure. Various wearable UV dosimeters have been developed to address these needs, particularly for outdoor workers. For measuring erythemal irradiance, recommendations from the World Meteorological Organization exist but standardized methods for characterization and calibration of wearable UV dosimeters are currently limited. At Aalto University and at Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Obs

Harnessing Sunlight Safely for Newborn Care: Balancing Risks and Benefits in Resource-Limited Settings.

Growing global interest in solar energy has renewed attention to sunlight exposure and its health effects. Although sunlight contains harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR), controlled exposure has preventive and therapeutic benefits. In many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia, newborns are traditionally exposed to early-morning sunlight to prevent vitamin D deficiency and help treat neonatal jaundice. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to nutritional rickets, while untreated severe jaundice may cause serious complications such as brain damage, deafn

Human Skin Responses to Ultraviolet (Predominantly UVC at 254 nm) Irradiation: In vivo Kinetics of Morphological Changes and Recovery Using Noninvasive Two-Photon Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin are manifold. On the one hand, it aids in the production of vitamin D and is used in phototherapy. On the other hand, it can cause cell damage leading to premature skin aging and the development of various skin pathologies, including skin cancer. Despite the importance of this issue, the development and recovery of morphological changes induced by UV irradiation are still almost unexplored. METHODS: In this in vivo study, two-photon tomography combined with fluorescence lifetime imaging was used to investigate structural chan

Anatomical Changes in the Peel of Sun-Damaged Pomegranates (Punica granatum L. cv. Hicaznar).

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a major fruit crop in tropical and subtropical regions, but changing climatic conditions-especially rising temperatures and intense solar radiation-are increasing physiological disorders. Sunburn, a key heat- and light-induced disorder, causes peel discoloration and tissue damage. This results in significant yield loss and reduced fruit quality. The objective of this study was to characterize sunburn-induced anatomical changes in the widely grown, highly sensitive Hicaznar cultivar in Türkiye, and to identify the optimal phenological stage for the applicatio

Ultraviolet arrows signal immediate, ever-present danger: development and evaluation of a skin cancer prevention campaign to improve young adults' sun protection in Australia.

OBJECTIVES AND IMPORTANCE OF STUDY: Melanoma of the skin is highly preventable, with >97% of cases in Australia/New Zealand caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Young adults aged 18-24 years are at greater risk of overexposure than older adults due to lower use of some forms of sun protection, spending more time in the sun, and being more likely to attempt tanning and experience sunburns. This paper covers the extensive research undertaken to develop and evaluate a new skin cancer prevention campaign to improve sun protection among young adults in New South Wales, Australia. METHO
