OBJECTIVE: To assess the population prevalence and correlates of ever receiving physician advice to practice sun protection (i.e. sun protection counseling) and whether such counseling is associated with sun protection behaviors in adolescents and their parents.
METHOD: Analysis of a nationally representative cross-sectional telephone survey of ultraviolet radiation exposure behaviors among US adolescents ages 11 to 18 and their parents, conducted between August and November 2004.
RESULTS: Forty-four percent of US adolescents and their parents reported physician sun protection counseling. Co

Malignant melanoma represents a significant and growing public health burden in the US and worldwide. It is estimated that 68, 130 cases of invasive malignant melanoma and at least 48,000 cases of melanoma in-situ will be diagnosed in the US this year. Melanoma is also one of the few remaining cancers with increasing US incidence. In the 1930s, the lifetime risk of an American developing invasive malignant melanoma was 1 in 1,500. Currently, that risk is 1 in 59. Deaths from malignant melanoma are also increasing. The mortality rate from malignant melanoma has risen about 2% annually since 196

BACKGROUND: Regardless of the underlying cause, both sunburn and superficial thermal injuries are classified as first-degree burns, since data on morphological differences are scarce. Reflectance-Mode-Confocal Microscopy (RMCM) enables high-resolution non-invasive investigation of the human skin.
OBJECTIVE: We studied in vivo histomorphological alterations in both sunburn and superficial thermal injuries using RMCM.
METHODS: Ten patients (6 female, 4 male; aged 28.4 +/- 10.6 years) with first-degree thermal-contact Injuries (TI group), and 9 sunburned patients (SB group; 7 female, 2 male; ag

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research shows that being sunburnt as a child is an important risk factor for cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). The purpose of this study was to investigate sunburn in relation to tanning habits and complexion among 7-year-old children living at different latitudes in Sweden.
METHODS: Two municipalities were chosen at latitudes 65 degrees N and 68 degrees N in the north of Sweden and two at latitude 57 degrees N in the south. Children born in 1994 and registered in the municipalities were to be included (N=1676). A questionnaire was sent to their parents asking abo

BACKGROUND: Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is a distinct histological variant of cutaneous melanoma that presents a genomic profile different from the other variants. Our aim was to explore the distinctive clinical, pathological, and epidemiological characteristics of ALM.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A series of 978 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma was selected from a single referral center. Among these, 79 were located on acral sites and 46 presented an ALM. This group was compared with a group composed of 932 patients with the remaining three most frequent cutaneous melanoma variants.

Chronic sun exposure causes degenerative changes in the skin that are recognized as photoaging, immunosuppression and photocarcinogenesis. Sun is necessary for life, so total sun avoidance is impossible. Sun exposure during the first 15 years of life and blistering sunburns before age 20 have been linked to an increased risk of melanoma. Individuals who have outdoor lifestyles, live in sunny climates, and are lightly pigmented will experience the greatest degree of photoaging. In our study, performed four years ago, we have shown the knowledge of more than 4000 people about the effects of UV r

First-degree burns are the most common type of burn, but are often inadequately treated. The methods of treatment and the course of healing are poorly documented owing to the fact that first-degree burns are generally not considered to be a serious injury. First-degree burns can be caused by thermal injury or UV irradiation (sunburn). The pathophysiology and the therapeutic approach are similar, although the damage follows a different time course for each injury--immediate damage after contact with hot objects, liquids or fire, delayed damage after sun exposure. After initial cooling with wate

This study investigated the numbers of melanocytic nevi in Turkish children and adolescents. The research was conducted on 2783 subjects (age range, 7-14 yrs) at three elementary schools in Malatya, Turkey (latitude 38 degrees N). Numbers of melanocytic nevi per subject were counted using a standard international protocol. Comparisons were made with subjects categorized according to age, sex and skin type. The mean melanocytic nevus count was 1.07 +/- 2.37. A significant positive correlation was found between nevus count and age (p < 0.001). The mean count for boys was significantly higher tha

Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation due sunlight can result in sunburns and/or suntans. Sunburn occurs only several hours after solar UVB radiation, while a suntan requires several days to several weeks to develop. In the present study, we measured serum and urine levels of melanin-related metabolites, 5-S-cysteinyldopa (5-S-CD) and 6-hydroxy-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (6H5MI2C), in nine subjects exposed to normal sunlight over the course of 12 months. We collected samples in the middle of each month and examined the variation of the markers, the correlation between them, and their correlatio

The literature reports strong correlations between UV exposure and latitude gradients of diseases. Evidence is emerging about the protective effects of UV exposure for cancer (breast, colo-rectal, prostate), autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, type II diabetes) and even mental disorders, such as schizophrenia. For the first time, the available levels of vitamin D producing UV or "vitamin D UV" (determined from the previtamin D action spectrum) and erythemal (sunburning) UV from throughout the USA are measured and compared, using measurements from seven locations in the USA are measured an

Routine sun protection is recommended to prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer prevention may be particularly important for individuals at greater risk, such as those with a family history of melanoma. Our aims were to examine the prevalence of sun-protective behavior (SPB) in unaffected first-degree relatives (FDR) of individuals diagnosed with melanoma and to examine the relationship between protection motivation theory (PMT) variables (i.e., perceived risk, perceived severity, self-efficacy, response efficacy) and SPB. FDRs (n=100), who were nominated by melanoma patients, completed a standardiz

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organisation has identified schools as key players in the global effort to reduce the rising incidence of skin cancer. Singapore lies 70 miles from the Equator, with one of the world's highest ultraviolet (UV) index scores. It is a multi-ethnic society, with many expatriates. Children in Singapore are likely to be exposed to high levels of UV radiation, and represent a variety of skin types. This study aimed to assess sun protection measures in schools, the frequency of reported sunburn in schoolchildren of different ethnic groups, the level of parental and schoo

A randomised, double-blind, single-centre, vehicle-controlled clinical trial was conducted to assess the efficacy and tolerability of diclofenac-Na 0.1% gel in 172 subjects suffering from acute first-degree natural sunburn. Overall 172 subjects with skin phototypes II-IV were randomised in a ratio of 2:1 to receive two applications of either diclofenac-Na 0.1% Emulgel gel or its vehicle Emulgel gel, 6 and 10 hours after the end of sun exposure. Subjects were drawn from a target population of healthy volunteers and well outdoor sunbathers with normal tolerance to ultraviolet light and the sun.

Sun exposure is the main environmental risk factor for melanoma, but the timing of exposure during life that confers increased risk is controversial. Here we provide the first report of the association between lifetime and age-specific cumulative ultraviolet exposure and cutaneous melanoma in Queensland, Australia, an area of high solar radiation, and examine the association separately for families at high, intermediate and low familial melanoma risk. Subjects were a population-based sample of melanoma cases diagnosed and registered in Queensland between 1982 and 1990 and their relatives. The

BACKGROUND: Punta Arenas, Chile, the southernmost city in the world (53 degrees S), with a population of 154,000, is located near the Antarctic ozone hole (AOH) and has been regularly affected by high levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation each spring for the last 20 years. Large increases in UV-B associated with the AOH have been measured with increases in UV-B at 297 nm of up to 38 times those of similar days with normal ozone. Recently we reported significant increases in sunburns during the spring of 1999 on days with low ozone because of the AOH.
METHODS: A surveillance of skin cancers

The antiapoptotic protein bcl-2 is found up-regulated in a number of malignant and premalignant skin conditions of keratinocyte origin, but in normal skin, it is expressed at low levels only in interfollicular epidermis. To investigate whether unregulated bcl-2 expression could affect the incidence of epidermal tumors, we have generated a mouse line that over-expresses human bcl-2 in the basal layer of epidermis under the control of the human keratin 14 promoter. These mice were subjected to both UVB photocarcinogenesis and classical two-stage chemical carcinogenesis. Although transgenic bcl-2
