Ultraviolet arrows signal immediate, ever-present danger: development and evaluation of a skin cancer prevention campaign to improve young adults' sun protection in Australia.

OBJECTIVES AND IMPORTANCE OF STUDY: Melanoma of the skin is highly preventable, with >97% of cases in Australia/New Zealand caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Young adults aged 18-24 years are at greater risk of overexposure than older adults due to lower use of some forms of sun protection, spending more time in the sun, and being more likely to attempt tanning and experience sunburns. This paper covers the extensive research undertaken to develop and evaluate a new skin cancer prevention campaign to improve sun protection among young adults in New South Wales, Australia. METHO

A transcriptomic and metabolomic approach to the physiological adaptation of 'Bayushizi' pomegranate fruit to sunburn browning.

BACKGROUND: Sunburn browning is a major physiological disease of the ‘Bayushizi’ pomegranate fruit that significantly affects its appearance and internal quality. At present, the underlying mechanisms of sunburn browning in ‘Baiyushizi’ pomegranates remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the physiological adaptations, metabolic shifts and potential genetic regulation underlying sunburn browning in ‘Baiyushizi’ pomegranates. RESULTS: Sunburn browning induces pericarp cell shrinkage and lignification, leading to increases in H2O2, O2− and MDA levels, indicating that sunburn browning causes

Association Between the Atherogenic Index of Plasma and Sunburn: A Nationally Representative Study.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that sunburn is related to the inflammatory response caused by lipids. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) can evaluate the lipid profile through the interaction of different lipid components. However, whether AIP is related to the risk of sunburn has not been confirmed. METHOD: The method is to include 11,241 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participants, and use multivariate logistic regression analysis to analyze the association between AIP and the risk of sunburn. Further subgroup analyses explored the correlation between AIP and sunbu

The Invisible Wound: Silent Focal Breach of Skin Integrity that Cascades into Systemic Dysfunction and Chronic Morbidity.

Barrier function of human skin maintains hydration by preventing excessive transepidermal water loss (TEWL), blocks the entry of pathogens and allergens, regulates thermal and chemical exchange with the environment, and sustains immune equilibrium. A wound arises when this barrier is breached, resulting in a loss of structural integrity and barrier function. An invisible wound represents a focal loss of human skin barrier function without any visible cut, ulcer, or defect. Despite appearing intact, the skin in these regions is functionally compromised. Sunscreen Efficacy Against UVA1- And Visible Light-Induced Skin Pigmentation Is Influenced by Ancestry.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that individuals with different skin phototypes require tailored approaches to achieve optimal photoprotection. Individuals with darker skin phototypes are more prone to UVA1- and visible light-induced pigmentation, whereas lighter phototypes are more susceptible to shorter wavelengths such as UVB and UVA2. Thus, skin phototype is an important determinant of sunscreen efficacy. In the present study, we have asked if ancestry-independent of phototype-is another factor affecting sunscreen efficacy. OBJECTIVES: (i) To determine the overall photoprotective ef

Pro-inflammatory roles of ultraviolet radiation in cutaneous photocarcinogenesis.

Previously, it was thought that ultraviolet radiation (UV) carcinogenesis was caused by accumulation of mutations related to cancer, including oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. These genetic changes found in skin cancers are considered to be induced by UV, based on the findings that "UV-signature mutations" are predominant. However, recent findings revealed that UV carcinogenesis includes a more complicated process, and the importance of inflammation is emphasized. It is evident that DNA lesions cause inflammation. We showed that Ogg1 knockout mice, which fail to repair 8-OxoG, a represent

The Effects of Sun Exposure and Pigmentation Phenotype on Prognosis in Metastatic Melanoma.

Ultraviolet radiation exposure and a fair pigmentation phenotype are well-established risk factors for primary cutaneous melanoma. However, the prognostic relevance of these risk factors is largely unexplored in metastatic disease. The aim of this study was to examine whether phenotypic characteristics and sun exposure patterns affect the prognosis of metastatic melanoma with immunotherapy available. In this retrospective study, 210 patients with stage IV melanoma were included. All patients were asked to answer a standardized questionnaire regarding risk factors for melanoma, including items

Biological Photoprotection: A Review of its Mechanisms, Evidence, and Clinical Implications.

Biological photoprotection refers to the enhancement, preservation, or mimicry of the skin's intrinsic defense systems to prevent or mitigate damage induced by solar and environmental stressors. Unlike conventional sunscreens, which primarily act by reducing photon penetration, biological photoprotection targets the downstream molecular and cellular responses triggered by these exposures. It is achieved by incorporating nonfiltering photoprotective ingredients (PINGs) into sunscreens, which act on key biological pathways involved in skin damage and recovery. Emerging evidence suggests that the

Sunburn-induced bark damage facilitates Eutypella decipiens infection of Carpinus betulus in Serbian urban landscapes.

European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a significant component of urban green spaces in Serbia. Recently, a decline characterized by crown dieback and distinct spindle-shaped bark cankers has been observed in planted alley trees. This study aimed to identify the causal agent of these symptoms and investigate the role of environmental stressors in disease development. Field surveys were conducted in central Serbia, assessing the orientation and morphology of cankers. Following isolation and molecular identification, Eutypella decipiens (previously known as Anthostoma decipiens) was identified

Sunscreen Use Barriers in White U.S. Adults: Gender, Generation, and Skin Phototype Differences.

INTRODUCTION: Skin cancer remains a major public health concern, and White individuals carry the highest lifetime risk and mortality. Ultraviolet exposure and sunburn are well-established skin cancer risk factors, yet regular sunscreen use remains low among U.S. adults. Few studies have assessed barriers to sunscreen use in the U.S., and prior studies are often geographically or demographically limited, restricting comparability among subgroups. METHODS: A cross-sectional online panel survey of White U.S. adults (N=739) was developed and administered. Participants selected all personally rele

A Gap in Knowledge: Patient Perspectives and Barriers to Sunscreen Use After Burn Injury.

Burned skin remains highly sensitive to UV radiation for years after injury, increasing the risk of damage, pigmentary changes, and carcinogenesis. Although sun protection is crucial, many burn survivors are unsure of necessary measures or how to incorporate them into daily life. This study evaluated survivors' knowledge and use of sun protection to inform future educational efforts. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at a Level 1 American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn center from June to September 2025. Adult burn patients attending outpatient clinic visits completed a 7-item surve
