Revisiting the action spectrum of DNA damage: Chemiexcitation and the expanded biological spectrum of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer formation.

The action spectrum of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) formation has long been viewed as reflecting the DNA absorption spectrum and closely aligned with the erythema (sunburn) spectrum. This alignment established the prevailing paradigm in which erythema serves as a surrogate for mutagenic risk and ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) is responsible for biologically meaningful DNA damage in skin. However, the discovery of delayed or "dark" CPDs, generated through post-exposure biochemical processes such as melanin-dependent chemiexcitation, extends and refines this classical view. It is increasing

Shade Nets Modulate Photosynthetic Balance and Antioxidant Homeostasis to Improve Fruit Quality in Ponkan.

To clarify the effects of shade-net covering on sunburn control and fruit quality of ponkan, white, gray, black, and blue nets with differing light transmittance were applied to assess the canopy microenvironment, leaf photosynthesis, peel antioxidant system, and fruit quality. All shading treatments significantly reduced fruit surface temperature and light intensity compared with the unshaded control. Light transmittance was significantly higher under white (26.49%) and blue (25.69%) nets than under gray (12.97%) and black (12.58%) nets. Consequently, sunburn incidence decreased significantly

Evolving sunscreen-use prevalence, patterns and perceptions from an online survey of digitally active Africans.

This study explores, via a prospective cross-sectional online survey, sunscreen-use patterns and perceptions among digitally active people from sub-Saharan Africa. The survey reveals that 64% of respondents use sunscreen, primarily to prevent photoageing and hyperpigmentation, with broad-spectrum SPF >30 products the most commonly used. Fifty-six percent report reduced hyperpigmentation and sunburn with use. This study reports increased sunscreen use and knowledge of perceived benefits compared with previous African studies; however, knowledge gaps and cosmetic concerns (whitish casts and oili

Exploring the paradoxical association of sun exposure and melanoma-specific mortality: The Norwegian Women and Health (NOWAC) Study.

BACKGROUND: Paradoxically, some studies have found that high sun exposure, a well-known cause of melanoma, is associated with lower mortality among melanoma patients. In the Norwegian Women and Health cohort, we aimed to investigate associations between pre-diagnosis sun exposure and melanoma-specific and overall death, and the potential impact of unmeasured confounding and selection bias (conditioning on melanoma diagnosis) on any observed association between markers of high sun exposure and death. METHODS: We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) by Cox regression, observed covariate E-values, bias

Phenotypic and Dermoscopic Features in First-Degree Relatives of Melanoma Patients: A Controlled Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma is a multifactorial malignancy influenced by genetic susceptibility, phenotypic traits, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. First-degree relatives of melanoma patients represent a recognized high-risk group, yet data integrating detailed dermoscopic assessment with clinical risk profiling remain limited. This study aimed to compare phenotypic characteristics, nevus patterns, and sun-exposure-related factors between first-degree relatives of melanoma patients and matched controls, and to evaluate whether observed associations reflect an independent familial risk pattern.

Bloodstream Infection in an Immunocompromised Host After Unusual Presentation of Photo Recall Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND Photo recall dermatitis (PRD) is a phototoxic eruption that occurs in areas of previous ultraviolet-damaged skin following systemic administration of a drug, most commonly chemotherapeutic medications. Although generally considered a self-limited dermatologic phenomenon, its implications in immunocompromised patients have not been well characterized. Secondary infection complicating PRD has not been previously established in the literature. This case is unique because the patient had an unusual rash while neutropenic, then developed a bloodstream infection (BSI), with the skin as he

Interactions between automated cooling irrigation and basal leaf removal in cv. Barbera grapevines.

Over a span of two years, a study on Barbera explored the interactive effects of localized cluster nebulization compared to uncooled vines, alongside the presence or absence of late basal leaf removal, using a full factorial design. In this design, basal leaf removal was implemented in both cooled and uncooled vines. The cooling system employed foggers that delivered a water flow of 11.2 L/h, automatically activating when air temperature exceeded 33 °C and relative humidity dropped below 55%. Throughout both seasons, assessments were made on leaf gas exchange, water status, yield components, a

Platelet-Derived serotonin activates SST⁺ pruriceptors via 5HTR2B to mediate UVB-Induced itch.

INTRODUCTION: Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation is a major environmental trigger of pruritus, from mild sunburn-associated itch to the excruciating Hell's itch, yet the neuroimmune wiring connecting UVB to relentless scratching remains poorly understood. Beyond their traditional roles in hemostasis and inflammation, platelets emerging as key modulators of neuroimmune signaling. However, whether platelets directly influence sensory neuron activity in pathological itch remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study explores platelets' role in UVB-induced itch, focusing on 5-HT signaling and neuronal subty

Clinical and Dermoscopic Determinants of Surgical Decision-Making in Skin Cancer Screening: A Retrospective Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Deciding which pigmented or non-pigmented skin lesions require surgical excision, as opposed to continued observation, is a common challenge in everyday dermatologic practice. Although dermoscopy is well established as a tool that improves melanoma detection accuracy compared with naked-eye examination, real-world evidence on how demographic profile, patient history, and dermoscopic impression jointly influence the surgical decision remains limited. This study examined the clinical and dermoscopic factors associated with a positive surgical decision (PSD) in a large

Cross-cultural beliefs and practices of caregivers regarding sunlight exposure for newborn jaundice: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice affects most newborns worldwide and remains a major cause of preventable bilirubin-induced neurological injury in low-resource settings. Although most clinical guidelines recommend standardised electrically powered phototherapy and discourage sunlight exposure for newborns with jaundice due to safety concerns, uncontrolled exposure to direct sunlight remains widespread in many communities. We aimed to chart cross-cultural beliefs and practices regarding sunlight exposure for newborn jaundice to inform safer newborn care. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review usi

Increasing topical sunscreen use in German outdoor workers: results of a non-randomised controlled intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a major environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Outdoor workers accumulate high lifetime UVR exposure and therefore face an increased risk of developing actinic keratoses and skin cancer. Despite established recommendations for sun protection, adherence among outdoor workers remains low. Improving access to sunscreen and providing targeted health education may help reduce barriers to sun-protective behaviour among outdoor workers. Therefore, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a workplace intervention designed t
