BACKGROUND: SunSmart is the annual skin cancer prevention awareness campaign run by the National Cancer Control Programme in Ireland.
OBJECTIVES: To assess sun protection attitudes following the 2023 campaign and compare findings with those gathered in 2022.
METHODS: An online survey was conducted in September 2023, repeating the 2022 survey. Data were collated and analysed.

ISSUES ADDRESSED: Australia continues to have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In NSW, melanoma is the third most common cancer diagnosed. At least 95% of skin cancers are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun, making it a highly preventable cancer. BACKGROUND: Damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation plays a decisive role in the carcinogenesis of malignant tumors of the eyelids.
METHODS: A selective literature search was performed in PubMed and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: Large epidemiological studies show an increase in the prevalence of eyelid tumors in recent decades. The incidence of malignant eyelid tumors has increased especially in the white population over the last 70 years. A UV-induced damage to tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes which play a key role in the carcinogenesis of malignant eyelid tumors has been demonstrated.

Sun protection behaviours, including limiting sun exposure, seeking shade, wearing protective gear, and using sunscreen, help mitigate excessive sun exposure. BACKGROUND: This study aims to provide a general overview of cancer risk perceptions and reported sunburns to prevent sunburn and reduce the long-term risk of developing skin cancer.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey 6 and analysis was carried out with SPSS. Descriptive statistics were conducted to explore sociodemographic characteristics, cancer risk perceptions, and behaviors surrounding sunburns in our sample. Associations between number of sunburns and sociodemographic variables were reported using multinomial regression analysis.
