Immunofluorescence findings in a reactivating lichenoid photoallergic chronic dermatitis (actinic reticuloid).

BACKGROUND: Chronic photosensitivity dermatitis (CPD) (also named actinic reticuloid) is an unusual disease classically referred often in elderly men. Affected patients have severely itchy, thickened dry skin in areas exposed to the sun throughout the years. METHOD: A Caucasian female patient who worked most of her life outside who had "chronic dermatitis" in her neck started planting chrysanthemum in her garden on a sunny day. Later, she presented edema, erythema, papules, and a few vesicles in her neck with severe pruritus. STUDIES: A skin biopsy revealed the diagnosis of CPD, along with p

Probing skin photoallergens in reconstructed human epidermis: An EPR spin trapping investigation.

Photoallergic contact dermatitis is a skin disease caused by combined exposure to photoreactive chemicals and sunlight. Exposure to allergens and the risk of skin sensitization is an essential regulatory issue within the industry. Yet, only few non-validated assays for photoallergy assessment exist as the pathogenesis is not fully deciphered. Improving such assays and/or developing new ones require an understanding of the chemical mechanisms involved. The first key event in the photosensitization process, namely chemical binding of the photoallergen to endogenous proteins, is thought to procee

[Solar urticaria and polymorphous light eruption].

Solar urticaria is a rare idiopathic photodermatosis. According to the current knowledge its pathogenesis is most likely based on an allergic type I reaction to an autoantigen activated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation or visible light. As many of the patients suffer from severe forms of the disease, it may therefore severely impair the quality of life of those affected. In contrast, polymorphous light eruption is a very common disease, which, according to the current data, can be interpreted as a type IV allergic reaction to a photoallergen induced by UV radiation. As the skin lesions heal despi

The Potential of Natural Compounds in UV Protection Products.

Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation mainly leads to skin disorders (erythema, burns, immunosuppression), skin aging, and skin cancer as the most serious side effect. It has been widely accepted that using sunscreen products is an important way to protect against the harmful effects of UV rays. Although commercial sunscreens have constantly changed and improved over time, there are emerging concerns about the safety of conventional, organic, UV filters due to adverse effects on humans (such as photoallergic dermatitis, contact sensitivity, endocrine-disrupting effects, etc.) as well as accumu

Variable Presentations of Photodermatoses - A Case Series.

Photodermatoses represent a broad spectrum of skin diseases caused because of exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It is categorized mainly as idiopathic photosensitive disorders, drug or chemical induced photosensitivity reactions, DNA repair-deficiency photodermatoses and photoaggravated dermatoses. Despite being under the photodermatoses umbrella, the pathophysiology of each type of photodermatoses varies. We reported 4 cases of photodermatoses including azathioprine induced pellagra, adult onset actinic prurigo, and photoallergic contact dermatitis due to NSAIDs and cutting fluids. Photoprot

Clinical Safety Profile of TrichoConcept™, a Line of Cosmetic Vehicles for Personalized Treatment of Alopecia.

Alopecia is a chronic dermatological disorder that affects patients worldwide, with a significant impact on quality of life, self-esteem, and psychological wellbeing. However, commercially available options for alopecia treatment are still limited. Considering that topical formulations have a long-term use therapeutic profile, the safety of their ingredients should be closely evaluated to avoid potentially irritant substances. Alternative active ingredients with different mechanisms of action, as well as adequate vehicles, might increase patients' adherence leading to better clinical outcomes.

Drug-induced photosensitivity associated with anticancer therapies.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the promising results in terms of effectiveness of anticancer treatments, a wide range of dermatologic adverse reactions have been reported. Among them, skin photosensitivity, defined as a range of dermatologic conditions caused or exacerbated by sunlight exposure, is an emerging adverse event. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A review of the current literature was performed to report the most characteristic phototoxic and photoallergic reactions associated with anticancer therapies, as well as other characteristic manifestations potentially related to photo-exposure, including UV

Surprising results of patch testing with the baseline series in patients with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen.

OBJECTIVE: Photoallergic reactions due to topical ketoprofen are common. As some simultaneous contact allergies have been described in the literature, we aimed to get an overview of the pattern of reactivity towards common allergens in the baseline series in ketoprofen-photoallergic individuals. METHODS: Using our database, we found 94 patients with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen diagnosed during 1999-2018. Approximately 12 800 patients patch tested with the baseline series during the same time frame served as controls. Data on patch testing with the baseline series of 518 individuals bel

Phototoxic reaction to oral terbinafine due to Tinea capitis in a child.

We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who developed a phototoxic skin reaction to terbinafine on his scalp, ears, and face in the form of disseminated erythematous plaques, which resembled subacute lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in their clinical presentation. Skin changes appeared a short time after the boy was exposed to sunlight during the period of time when he was treated with oral terbinafine due to Microsporum canis fungal scalp infection. Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection primarily affecting prepubertal children (1). Microsporum canis remains the predominant causative or

Topical Sunscreens: A Narrative Review for Contact Sensitivity, Potential Allergens, Clinical Evaluation, and Management for their Optimal Use in Clinical Practice.

Topical sunscreens decrease the quantity of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun reaching the skin by either blocking or scattering it and help protect the skin from dyspigmentation, photoaging, DNA damage, and photocarcinogenesis, especially in photosensitive individuals. The significant role played by visible light and infrared light in skin pigmentation and photoaging has been recognized in recent years. The majority of broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against UV-B (290-320nm) and UV-A (320-400nm) radiation. Allergic reactions to sunscreens were relatively uncommon compared to their widespr
