The electron spin resonance-based photosafety test (ESR-PT) was modified using a new parameter, photoreactivity index (PRI), to detect singlet oxygen and free radical photoproducts simultaneously. With this modification, the modified ESR-PT is expected to reduce the number of false negative results due to chemicals producing free radical photoproducts other than singlet oxygen. The assay performance of the modified ESR-PT was evaluated using 56 chemicals, including hydrophobic chemicals. When using the PRI cutoff value of 2.0 in the modified ESR-PT, the accuracy relative to photosafety referen

BACKGROUND: Photopatch testing has been standardized for diagnosing photoallergic contact dermatitis but is still infrequently used.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize photopatch test (PPT) results and their clinical relevance.
METHODS: We collected retrospective data from patients photopatch tested in our Dermatology Unit (2010-2021), using the European PPT 'baseline' series, other allergens, and patient's own products, when appropriate.
RESULTS: Out of 223 patients, 75 patients (33.6%) were reactive with 124 positive PPT reactions, considered relevant in 56/223 patients (25.1%) and in 72/124 rea

BACKGROUND: Photopatch testing represents the gold standard for the diagnosis of photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD). We aimed to identify common photoallergens in our tertiary dermatological referral centre from 2012 to 2021, to compare this to the preceding period studied, and data from other communities.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all 90 patients who underwent photopatch testing at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, between 2012 and 2021.
RESULTS: Of 90 patients, 19 (21.1%) were male, and the mean age was 41.6 years. Eighty-four (93.3%) underwent testing to our

Abstract Active ingredients of sunscreens, or UV filters, have increased in use because public awareness of sun safety has risen. In addition to this intentional use, unintentional exposures to UV filters also occur through application of personal care products, where the filters are incorporated into the product. There are 2 main types of UV filters: organic (chemical) filters and the 2 inorganic (mineral) filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) have been caused by organic filters; oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)

Certain chemicals and/or their byproducts are photoactivated by UV/VIS and trigger a dermal allergenic response, clinically recognized as photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD). It is important to identify the chemicals which are potentially photoallergenic, not only for establishing the correct differential diagnosis between PACD and other photodermatoses, but also as causative agents which should be avoided as a preventative measure. Moreover, materials with photoallergenic properties need to be correctly identified to allow thorough safety assessments for their use in finished products (e.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamases producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) are of major concern in clinical practice because of limited therapeutic options effective to treat them. Published studies showed that ESBL-E, widely spread in Europe, United States or Asia; are also frequent in Africa. However, the impact of ESBL-E infections is yet to be adequately determined in Sub-Saharan African countries, particularly in Senegal. The aim of our study was to estimate the incidence rate of ESBL-E infections and to assess their clinical and economic impact in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is an abnormally proliferating photoallergic skin disease. Dysregulated inflammation and oxidative stress are the immediate factors in the abnormal proliferation of keratinocytes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of curcumin on the aberrant proliferation of keratinocytes in an in vitro (actinic dermatitis) AD model and the possible molecular mechanisms.
METHODS: The keratinocytes were irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) to construct an in vitro AD model and then processed with different concentrations of curcumin. Cell viability, oxidative s

A woman in her 60s with a history of hypertension and stasis dermatitis presented to a primary care clinic with a bilateral, erythematous rash on the legs, stomach, and chest. Photosensitive rash and dermatitis may be caused by many conditions. Hydrochlorothiazide-induced dermatitis is a rare side effect of thiazide diuretics. Early identification of sulfa-sensitivity and photoallergic or phototoxic reaction is essential to accurate diagnosis and treatment of photosensitive dermatitis. Soliciting a targeted history is essential to delineating drug-induced dermatitis from stasis dermatitis. A t

The electron spin resonance (ESR)-based photosafety test (ESR-PT) is a non-animal prediction test for photosafety evaluations that can be used even for hydrophobic chemicals; the method is based on the detection of singlet oxygen generation using ESR spectroscopy and showing high accuracy for compounds with known photosafety information. During the process of extending the application data for ESR-PT, we found three false-negative chemicals: bithionol, fenticlor and cilnidipine. These chemicals did not show the characteristic triplet signal of 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (4

BACKGROUND: Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) is an immune-mediated photo-allergic skin disease. In the clinic, the treatment of this disease is hampered by the lack of proper understanding of the skin barrier dysfunction mechanism.
OBJECTIVE: To illuminate the mechanism of skin barrier dysfunction in CAD.
METHODS: Transcriptome sequencing and protein profiling were used to detect skin barrier injury-related genes. RNA pull down, a promoter-reporter gene assay, and chromatin isolation by RNA purification-sequencing were used to elucidate the effect of WAKMAR2 in skin barrier functionality.

Photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) is a form of allergic contact dermatitis that occurs due to the interaction between a topically applied chemical and exposure to UV radiation. It can be difficult to identify and requires photopatch testing (PPT) for definitive diagnosis. In this article, we provide an overview of PACD, including clinical features, the most common photoallergens, and why cases may go undiagnosed.

Photodermatosis is an abnormal skin inflammatory reaction to light. The major classifications of photodermatoses are idiopathic photodermatoses, photodermatoses due to exogenous or endogenous agents, photo-exacerbated dermatoses, and photosensitive genodermatoses. In this chapter, we focus on idiopathic photodermatoses and drug-related photodermatoses and emphasize on the epidemiology and immunogenetic backgrounds. Idiopathic photodermatoses, a spectrum of diseases with abnormal responses to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), include polymorphous light eruption, actinic prurigo, hydroa vacciniforme,
