Scoping review: biomarkers in chronic inducible urticaria.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU) affects approximately 0.5% of the population and is characterized by wheals triggered by specific stimuli, such as cold or heat exposure, physical exertion, mechanical friction, vibration, or delayed pressure, distinguishing it from chronic spontaneous urticaria. Biomarkers may improve diagnosis, define endotypes, predict disease course, monitor treatment responses, and subsequently guide personalized treatment strategies. This scoping review aimed to map current evidence on diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and monitoring or treatment-response

Novel cutaneous adverse effects of the increasingly prevalent glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists.

Prescribing of the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) is rapidly increasing as their efficacy for multiple indications becomes apparent. A better understanding of their cutaneous adverse effect profile is crucial, particularly as they are suggested for use in inflammatory dermatoses. We describe two patients who developed novel cutaneous reactions associated with initiation of a GLP-1RA. Patient 1 developed multiple tender subcutaneous nodules on the trunk and limbs 4 weeks after the initiation of semaglutide. Histology demonstrated a noncaseating granulomatous dermatitis, and

Physiological and performance effects of a simulated prolonged service game in competitive male tennis players.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that ultraviolet radiation is related to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in Caucasians. Considering that patients with vitiligo have often no protective pigment in sun-exposed depigmented/white skin together with severe oxidative stress due to accumulation of millimolar epidermal hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), it would be expected that these patients develop a higher risk for early photodamage and NMSC. However, scattered reports on low patient numbers documented no increased risk for sun-induced skin cancers in this disease. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study

Efficacy of monoclonal antibodies and Janus kinase inhibitors in the treatment of idiopathic photosensitive skin disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic photosensitive skin disorders, or idiopathic photodermatoses, are characterized by abnormal reactions to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They encompass conditions such as actinic prurigo, chronic actinic dermatitis, solar urticaria, photoaggravated psoriasis, polymorphic light eruption and photoaggravated eczema. Treatment options remain limited, but monoclonal antibodies (such as dupilumab, omalizumab, adalimumab, ustekinumab) and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors (such as tofacitinib, baricitinib, upadacitinib) have emerged as promising potential therapies. Visible Light Protection Strategies for Diverse Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Visible light (VL; 400-700 nm) constitutes nearly half of solar radiation and has distinct biological effects on human skin. High-energy visible light (HEVL), particularly blue light (400-490 nm), contributes to erythema, persistent pigmentation, and photoaging. Emerging data also demonstrate synergistic pigmentary interactions between VL and long-wavelength ultraviolet A1 (UVA1). Individuals with skin of colour (SOC) and patients with visible-light-sensitive dermatoses are particularly susceptible to the cutaneous effects of visible light. This review aims to provide an evidence

Real-life experience from a tertiary phototherapy center on solar urticaria: clinical features, management, and long-term outcomes from a twenty-year cohort.

BACKGROUND: Solar urticaria (SU) is a rare, chronic photodermatosis characterized by immediate whealing upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) or visible light. Tolerance-induction phototherapy (photohardening), delivered as action-spectrum desensitization or cross-spectrum photohardening, represents the mainstay of management in antihistamine-refractory cases, yet data on its long-term real-world efficacy and safety remain limited. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical and photobiological characteristics, therapeutic outcomes, and long-term efficacy of tolerance-induction phototherapy

Omalizumab Therapy Results in Defined Behavioural Changes and Improvements in Quality of Life in Solar Urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Solar urticaria is a rare photodermatosis in which exquisite photosensitivity can require extreme behavioural adaptations, resulting in a substantial impact on quality of life (QoL). Omalizumab therapy has been demonstrated to improve several clinical outcome measures, but the impact on behavioural measures is poorly understood. Our objectives were to examine daylight exposure behaviours and QoL measures pre- and post-omalizumab therapy. METHODS: Daylight exposure diaries were completed by n = 5 patients with solar urticaria and n = 7 healthy participants during different seasons

Sun Protection Behaviours and Photosensitivity in Japanese Children: Toyama Adjunct Study of Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

Children have up to three3 times the annual sun exposure of adults. This cross-sectional study evaluated sun protection behaviorbehaviour, related factors, and the incidence of photosensitivity in Japanese children. A self-administered questionnaire administered to mothers of second2nd-grade children as part of the Toyama Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study was used and analyzedanalysed (n=1,691). The results showed that 67.5 % of children always or sometimes used sunscreen when going out for a long time, while 73.2 % used at least one method of sun protection when swim

Community sunbed use and photosensitivity reactions: a systematic review.

Sunbeds emitting ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are an established carcinogen, but little attention has been given to the adverse photosensitivity reactions the UVR exposure can cause. We addressed this information gap through systematic review of the literature on photosensitivity reactions reported following community sunbed use. A systematic search of Medline (via PubMed), CINAHL and Embase identified studies published in English (inception to May 2025). The protocol was registered in Prospero (CRD420251048551). We included all study designs. Quality was assessed using JBI Critical Appraisal C

Differential Effects of Dupilumab in a Patient With Localized Heat Urticaria, Delayed Solar Urticaria, and Symptomatic Dermographism.

Physical urticaria is a subtype of chronic inducible urticaria characterized by wheals and/or angioedema triggered by physical stimuli. We report a refractory case of combined localized heat urticaria, delayed solar urticaria, and symptomatic dermographism in a 16-year-old girl. Provocation testing showed erythematous and edematous lesions after thermal stimulation at 42°C and after the application of warm water at 40°C and 42°C. An intradermal test using the patient's serum heated to 42°C for 5 min yielded a positive result, leading to the diagnosis of localized heat urticaria. Visible light

Abnormal-response yield and waveband prioritisation in monochromator phototesting for suspected photodermatoses.

BACKGROUND: Monochromator phototesting is a specialist investigation to assess abnormal skin response to defined ultraviolet and visible wavebands in patients with suspected photodermatoses. Monochromator phototesting spans ultraviolet B (UVB), ultraviolet A (UVA) and visible light (VL) and is used in specialist UK photodiagnostic centres. Abnormal-response yield varies between individuals and diagnostic groups. However, the procedure is time- and resource-intensive and limited to specialist centres. OBJECTIVES: To identify the wavebands and waveband combinations that captured the greatest pr

Sunlight, mast cells, and photosensitivity: rethinking disease mechanisms in solar urticaria.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Solar urticaria is a rare, life-altering photodermatosis caused by aberrant mast cell degranulation and cutaneous whealing following exposure to sunlight. Although mast cell degranulation is the key causal event in solar urticaria, upstream mechanisms linking sunlight exposure to mast cell activation remain unclear. This review will discuss existing evidence supporting our understanding of solar urticaria pathobiology. It will also incorporate evidence regarding interactions between sunlight, skin, and cutaneous mast cells to highlight a novel range of potential pathomechani

Chromatin accessibility profiling of Treg cells in acute urticaria.

Acute urticaria can be a presenting symptom of anaphylaxis characterized by transient red swellings or fulminant wheals, often accompanied by severe pruritus. Numerous studies have substantiated the important involvement of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the occurrence of allergic diseases and autoimmune diseases. However, the role of Tregs in the pathogenesis of acute urticaria is unclear. In this study, we found that the frequency of Tregs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was decreased in patients with acute urticaria compared with normal controls by flow cytometry. Analysis of A
