INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Strict photoprotection is essential for the management of photodermatoses. However, we have not found studies on photoprotection (topical and/or oral) prescribed in clinical practice. Our objective was to describe the characteristics of topical and oral photoprotection recommended for photodermatoses, including the prescription of a topical broad-spectrum sunscreen containing ectoin (BSSE).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous survey carried out (as a pretest) among dermatologists at an online photoprotection event held on May 20, 2023, in Spain.
RESULTS: The surv

BACKGROUND: Rosacea, discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), and polymorphous light eruption (PLE) can present with overlapping clinical and histopathological features. This study aimed to compare the immunohistochemical and histopathological findings of these lesions and to evaluate the contribution of immunohistochemistry to the differential diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathological reevaluation was performed on previously diagnosed cases, including 27 DLE, 27 PLE, and 29 rosacea lesions. Immunohistochemical staining for CD4, CD8, and CD123 was conducted. The CD4/CD8 ratios of lymphocy

INTRODUCTION: In the treatment of hormone receptor-positive (HR+), HER2-negative (HER2-) metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the current guidelines recommend endocrine therapy combined with cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors as the preferred first-line treatment to preserve quality of life. Ribociclib is a CDK4/6 inhibitor that has been used in combination with aromatase inhibitors or fulvestrant in patients with HR+, HER2- metastatic breast cancer. Various adverse drug reactions associated with ribociclib have been reported, including cutaneous reactions, hepatotoxicity, and hematolo

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) is a self-limiting immunologically mediated photodermatitis that results in the eruption of pruritic lesions hours to days after sun exposure.
CASE PRESENTATION: The case presented here highlights the clinical presentation of a 39-year-old Caucasian male with an itchy, blistering rash affecting the chest, abdomen, arms, and legs. History and examination findings were suggestive of a neutrophil predominant variant of PMLE. The rash was evaluated through laboratory testing, potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy, wound culture, and punch biopsy. Th

Immune-mediated photodermatoses (IMPs) are skin diseases caused by altered immune responses triggered by sunlight, including polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), actinic prurigo (AP), solar urticaria (SU), chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD), and hydroa vacciniforme (HV). Managing IMPs is challenging because of the need for rigorous sun protection and the poor response to conventional therapies, particularly in moderate-to-severe patients. Researchers are exploring new targeted therapies for IMPs, including Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, a novel class of small molecules that block the JAK-STAT sig

Polymorphous Light Eruption (PLE) is a prevalent UV-induced photodermatosis characterized by abnormal immune responses, oxidative stress, and cutaneous inflammation. Alpha-glucosylrutin (AGR), a chemically modified flavonoid widely used for its antioxidant and photoprotective effects, has shown clinical efficacy; however, its synthetic origin and classification as a potential skin sensitizer and aquatic toxin raise safety and environmental concerns. These limitations underscore the need for safer, naturally derived alternatives. In this study, we investigated the comparative efficacy of querce

Background: Polymorphous light eruption is largely characterized by a delayed-type (type IV) hypersensitivity reaction to 1 or more undefined endogenous ultraviolet-induced skin antigens. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of tofacitinib in refractory cases of polymorphous light eruption. Methods: Seven patients who had failed multiple systemic treatments or relapsed within 2 weeks of existing systemic agents with concomitant photoprotection were offered tofacitinib after written consent. Results: Initiation of tofacitinib led to a marked reduction of itching (mean ± SD 3.1 ± 1.12 days) foll

Dyschromia is a concern for many patients, especially persons of color. Postinflammatory hypopigmentation and depigmentation can affect all skin types; however, it is more apparent in those with darker skin. Some members of the dermatology community may not comprehensively understand the mechanisms of these reactions and the extent of the psychosocial effect they have on persons of color. Skin of color patients experiencing a decrease or loss of pigmentation are left with few treatment options, with no available evidence-based treatment established from a sufficient sample size. Several diseas

Solar urticaria is a rare idiopathic photodermatosis. According to the current knowledge its pathogenesis is most likely based on an allergic type I reaction to an autoantigen activated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation or visible light. As many of the patients suffer from severe forms of the disease, it may therefore severely impair the quality of life of those affected. In contrast, polymorphous light eruption is a very common disease, which, according to the current data, can be interpreted as a type IV allergic reaction to a photoallergen induced by UV radiation. As the skin lesions heal despi

Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death distinct from apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, is increasingly recognized for its role in skin disease pathology. Characterized by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation, ferroptosis has been implicated in the progression of various skin conditions, including psoriasis, photosensitive dermatitis, and melanoma. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis and compares its cellular effects with other forms of cell death in the context of skin health and disease. We systematically examine the role of

Cutaneous (CLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are autoimmune diseases with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the most important trigger of CLE; however, the degree of photosensitivity varies between the clinical subtypes. The expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)-important enzymes involved in skin turnover and homeostasis-is modulated by UVR. To investigate the causality of the clinically observed effects of UVR, sun-exposed lesional skin samples from patients with different subtypes of lupus erythematosus (LE) were examined by immunohistochemistry

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to allergens only in the presence of ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. Photopatch testing (PhotoPT) is necessary to confirm the diagnosis of PACD. There are few published studies of PhotoPT in North America.
OBJECTIVE: To summarise the results of patients photopatch tested by members of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG), 2009-2020.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patient characteristics and PhotoPT results to 32 allergens on the NACDG Photopatch Test Series.
RESULTS: Most of the

AIM: Low-level light therapy (LLLT) may offer an adjunctive therapeutic tool for inflammatory skin conditions. This pilot study assessed the efficacy of a red/near-infrared (NIR)-emitting fabric for psoriasis, polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), and alopecia areata (AA).
METHODS: Fourteen patients (five with psoriasis, five with PMLE, and four with AA) were instructed to wear a red/NIR-emitting (Lumiton®) garment during the 12-week study. Efficacy was assessed subjectively by patient-reported improvement and objectively by the redness, thickness, and scale of elbow psoriasis plaques, the freq

BACKGROUND: Summer and spring eruptions on the elbows are a variant of polymorphous light eruption described on clinical and histopathological grounds; however, to our knowledge, they have not been confirmed by photobiological studies.
OBJECTIVE: Based on photobiological studies, this study aimed to demonstrate the involvement of ultraviolet-A (UVA) radiation in this variant of polymorphous light eruption occurring exclusively on the elbows.
METHODS: A series of five patients with polymorphous light eruption lesions on the elbows were included in our study. All patients underwent phototestin

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is the most common idiopathic, acquired photodermatosis. The pathophysiology of PLE is not yet fully understood but seems to involve immunological mechanisms, UVA-induced oxidative stress, and the subsequent elicitation of a cellular stress response affecting keratinocyte gene expression and skin immune function. In the present study, a high broad-spectrum sunscreen medical device (MD), containing a very high protection complex of UVB and UVA filters and ectoin, was investigated for its ability to protect against UVA-induced PLE.
METHODS: The stu
