Deep Learning Approaches for the Classification of Keloid Images in the Context of Malignant and Benign Skin Disorders.

Background/Objectives: Misdiagnosing skin disorders leads to the administration of wrong treatments, sometimes with life-impacting consequences. Deep learning algorithms are becoming more and more used for diagnosis. While many skin cancer/lesion image classification studies focus on datasets containing dermatoscopic images and do not include keloid images, in this study, we focus on diagnosing keloid disorders amongst other skin lesions and combine two publicly available datasets containing non-dermatoscopic images: one dataset with keloid images and one with images of other various benign an

The landscape of long noncoding RNA during cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma progression.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common cancer with a high morbidity rate and poor prognosis for metastatic disease. Disease may progress from premalignant actinic keratosis to invasive and metastatic cSCC, but it is perhaps best characterized as a disease continuum progressing from a differentiated to a progenitor-like state. The critical molecular mediators of this process remain poorly defined. Long noncoding (lnc)RNAs, a relatively unexplored class of RNA molecules > 200 nucleotides long, are likely to have important functional roles in cSCC. OBJECTIVES: To provid

Aloe Vera Gel and Rind-Derived Nanoparticles Mitigate Skin Photoaging via Activation of Nrf2/ARE Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Skin aging is the primary external manifestation of human aging, and long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the leading cause of photoaging, which can lead to actinic keratosis and skin cancer in severe cases. Traditional treatments may pose safety risks and cause side effects. As an emerging research direction, plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PDNPs) show promise in combating aging. Aloe vera, known for its natural active ingredients that benefit the skin, aloe-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (ADNPs) have not yet been studied for their potential in delaying ski

Combination of LED illumination and daylight photodynamic therapy for the treatment of actinic keratosis in solid organ transplant recipients: a prospective, randomized, comparative, intra-patient study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Solid organ transplant recipients have an increased risk of developing actinic keratosis. Recent studies show greater effectiveness when combining daylight photodynamic therapy with a posterior LED illumination for their treatment in immunocompetent patients. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of combining daylight photodynamic therapy and LED illumination versus daylight photodynamic therapy alone for the treatment of actinic keratosis in solid organ transplant recipients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This randomized intra-patient study was conducted a

Reshaping treatment paradigm in actinic keratosis by using a modified Delphi questionnaire.

PURPOSE: Actinic keratosis (AK) is the main precursor of invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Since it is impossible to predict which lesions will progress to cSCC, early treatment of AK is crucial. Although AK treatments are effective, some are associated with local skin reactions that may impact treatment compliance and effectiveness. The aim of this modified Delphi study was to review the efficacy and safety of the different AK treatments, gain an understanding of the dermatologists' perspectives on their use, and provide guidelines for clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHOD

A Non-randomized, Open-label, Multicenter Study to Evaluate the Safety and Tolerability of 10% Aminolevulinic Acid Gel in the Expanded Field-directed Treatment of Actinic Keratosis on the Face and Scalp with Red Light Photodynamic Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Dermatologists regularly encounter patients having expanded fields with numerous actinic keratosis (AK) lesions on the face and scalp. Field-directed red light photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a well-established treatment, yet published data on the safety of PDT on large areas is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of red light PDT in treating expanded AK fields on the face and scalp. METHODS: This was a non-randomized, open-label, multicenter study. After lesion preparation, 6g of 10% aminolevulinic acid (ALA) gel were applied to the treatment field (60 cm2) and

CAD-Skin: A Hybrid Convolutional Neural Network-Autoencoder Framework for Precise Detection and Classification of Skin Lesions and Cancer.

Skin cancer is a class of disorder defined by the growth of abnormal cells on the body. Accurately identifying and diagnosing skin lesions is quite difficult because skin malignancies share many common characteristics and a wide range of morphologies. To face this challenge, deep learning algorithms have been proposed. Deep learning algorithms have shown diagnostic efficacy comparable to dermatologists in the discipline of images-based skin lesion diagnosis in recent research articles. This work proposes a novel deep learning algorithm to detect skin cancer. The proposed CAD-Skin system detect

A joint learning approach for automated diagnosis of keratinocyte carcinoma using optical attenuation coefficients.

Keratinocyte carcinoma, such as Actinic Keratosis (AK) and Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), share similar clinical presentations but differ significantly in prognosis and treatment, highlighting the importance of effective screening. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) shows promise for diagnosing AK and BCC using signal intensity and skin layer thickness, but variability due to skin characteristics and system settings underscores the need for a standardized diagnostic method. Here, we propose an automated diagnostic method using the optical attenuation coefficient (OAC) and a joint learning strateg

The Comparison Between Conventional Photodynamic Therapy and "Painless"TM Photodynamic Therapy in the Treatment of Actinic Keratosis: A Mini Review.

Actinic keratosis is a prevalent skin condition associated with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation and serves as a precursor to squamous cell carcinoma. This condition arises from DNA mutations and abnormal cell growth triggered by ultraviolet rays. While uncertainties persist regarding the progression rate of actinic keratosis (AK) to squamous cell carcinoma, the significance of nonmelanoma skin cancers underscores the need for safe, efficient, cost-effective, and accessible treatment options. Factors such as number of lesions, skin type, and sun exposure increase the risk of progres

Raman spectroscopy assisted diagnosis and photodynamic therapy efficacy evaluation of actinic keratosis: Case report.

Actinic keratosis (AK), a precancerous skin lesion with malignant potential, demands timely diagnosis and effective treatment monitoring. Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) is the recommended treatment for AK, but there is currently a lack of methods to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Raman spectroscopy might be a promising tool for non-invasive diagnosis of AK and dynamic detection of PDT efficacy. This article reports a 77-year-old female patient with AK who received Raman spectroscopy detection and successful PDT. Utilizing a portable Raman spectrometer, distinct sp

TET2 promotes UVB-induced cell death by activating RIPK3-MLKL-necroptosis signaling.

Ultraviolet B(UVB) radiation is a leading environmental factor that induces severe photodamage. However, its pathogenic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Our previous research has found that Ten-eleven translocation 2 (TET2) is significantly upregulated in UVB-irradiated keratinocytes. Here, this study revealed that TET2 was upregulated in photodamaged skin, including specimens from actinic keratosis (AK) patients, UVB-exposed human skin sites, and a photodamaged mouse model. TET2 deficiency in keratinocytes mitigated UVB-induced cell death and photodamage, while TET2 overexpression e
