Poikiloderma of Civatte (PC) is a rather common, benign skin condition of obscure etiopathogenesis: cumulative exposure to UV radiation, hormonal changes associated with the menopause, and photo-allergic mechanisms have been implicated. We present seven cases of PC among the members of two unrelated Greek families, who have not shared common extrinsic influences. Literature review revealed no other reported familial cases. BACKGROUND: The flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye laser (585 and 577 nm) has proven to be a very effective and safe treatment option in the therapy of essential telangiectasias (ETE). Nevertheless, the postoperative intracutaneous hematomata, which most patients see as cosmetically disfiguring, always has been a matter of concern.

By varying the light spectrum, impulse length, impulse sequences and fluences, the PhotoDerm VL allows a large choice of individual treatment parameters. Superficial as well as deeper localized vascular malformations (essential telangiectases, port-wine stains, Poikiloderma of Civatte, hemangiomatous malformations) and cosmetically bothering hypertrichosis can be treated successfully with this high intensity polychromatic pulsed light source.

The use of pulsed yellow light from a flash-lamp-pumped pulsed dye laser has provided a successful form of therapy to remove both the telangiectasias and irregular pigmentation associated with poikiloderma of Civatte. The short pulse duration and specificity of the interaction between yellow light and hemoglobin permit this technique to be performed on the thin skin of the neck without textural changes or scarring. Furthermore, use of the large beam diameter of this laser system allows for rapid treatment of large areas in a short period of time.

Despite the decline in the incidence of berloque dermatitis during the past decade, milder cases resulting from the presence of relatively small quantities of bergapten in perfumed cosmetics continue to occur. The resultant hyperpigmentation may have an atypical presentation leading to error in diagnosis. In addition, the condition can sometimes induce or aggravate melasma and may be responsible for other pigmentary disorders of the face and neck of questionable etiology such as poikiloderma of Civatte, Riehl's melanosis and pigmented peribuccal erythema of Brocq.
