INTRODUCTION: While randomized clinical trials (RCT) confirmed superiority of Mepitel Film (MF) in reducing acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) compared to standard-of-care (SoC), the incremental cost difference has limited its use. A cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) was conducted from a Canadian healthcare payer's perspective to guide policy decisions.
METHODS: A decision model was constructed to perform a CEA for MF compared to SoC (moisturizers) for prevention of grade 2 or higher ARD following adjuvant hypo-fractionated whole-breast radiotherapy (RT) based on a Canadian multicentre RCT. Dir

Radiotherapy-induced skin fibrosis is a chronic progressive complication of radiotherapy that impairs function, aesthetics, and quality of life yet remains under-recognized and undertreated. While acute cutaneous toxicities are typically transient, chronic sequelae such as fibrosis, lymphedema, atrophy, telangiectasia, and dyspigmentation reflect uncontrolled tissue remodeling driven by sustained inflammation and fibroblast activation. Ionizing radiation generates reactive oxygen species that initiate vascular and epithelial injury, trigger immune infiltration, and perpetuate a cycle of transf

BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis (RD) remains a major clinical complication of radiotherapy, but its upstream molecular mechanisms are incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that ferroptosis-an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death-may contribute to radiation-induced tissue injury, yet its role in skin pathology and immune activation remains undefined.
METHODS: We integrated multi-omics analysis, cellular co-culture, computational modeling, and in vivo validation to investigate the role of NCOA4-mediated ferritinophagy and its interplay with the cGAS-STING pathway in RD.

Radiodermatitis is a common problem in breast cancer treatment with ionizing radiation. It may result in interruption of radiotherapy, depending on the level of the skin lesion. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Cavilon™ (3M, St. Paul, MN, USA), a novel prophylactic agent, in preventing mammary radiodermatitis compared to conventional sunflower oil. This prospective study involved 19 breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Participants received Cavilon™ on one breast quadrant and sunflower oil on the opposite quadrant. The occurrence and severity of radioder

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is a rare but severe inflammatory reaction induced by certain drugs in previously irradiated skin, which can markedly impair quality of life and disrupt cancer treatment. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying RRD remain poorly understood. In this study, a radiation recall-like dermatitis model (RRLD) was established in Sprague-Dawley rats by localized skin irradiation followed by subcutaneous administration of non-toxic concentrations of chemotherapeutic agents, including 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu, 10 µg/µL) or Epirubicin (EPI, 0.05 µg/µL), into the irradiat

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced perineal ulcers are often refractory to conventional dry exposure therapies. This article reports a case of extensive radiation-induced ulceration successfully managed using a moist wound healing protocol.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old male developed progressive perianal, scrotal, and penile ulceration following radiotherapy for rectal carcinoma. Four weeks of conventional dry exposure therapy proved ineffective. Upon admission, the patient was transitioned to a holistic treatment incorporating moist wound healing. This approach resulted in complete reepithe

Acute radiation dermatitis (RD) is a common and significant adverse effect experienced by patients with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy (RT). The authors of this study investigate the efficacy and safety of a topical cream infused with exosomes derived from adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASC-EXOs) in reducing radiation-induced skin damage. Fifteen patients undergoing RT applied the cream to the radiation-treated areas starting the night before treatment initiation and continued use for 2 weeks posttreatment. The severity of RD was evaluated at baseline and at Weeks 2, 4,

OBJECTIVE: Radiation exposure in patients has become increasingly common in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures guided by fluoroscopy. Radiation ulcers are one of the most serious consequences of radiation therapy, especially when the cumulative radiation dose is very high. Under such circumstances, patients may experience severe pain and permanent disfigurement due to tissue destruction. This article addresses the challenges faced by the authors in managing and treating fluoroscopy-associated radiodermatitis wounds.
METHOD: This was a prospective case series involving patients with radiati

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis is one of the most common radiotherapy-related side effects, which can influence patients' quality of life and affect therapeutic efficacy. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) appears as a low-cost technology, with significant results in the tissue repair process.
METHODS: It is a triple blind randomized controlled trial. A total of 96 patients undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer are estimated for the sample, which will be randomly assigned to a control group to receive a placebo and the institution's standard protocol (n = 48) or to an intervention group to re

PURPOSE: The objective of this research was to synthesize the evidence about the usage of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) in women with breast cancer undergoing hypo-fractionated whole-breast irradiation (HFWBI) for the treatment of acute radiodermatitis.
METHODS: The study included 50 patients (35-55 years) with unilateral breast cancer post-lumpectomy who received HFWBI. They were randomized into Group A (PEMF plus standard skin care) and Group B (standard skin care only). Skin reactions were assessed during PEMF therapy using sonographic skin thickness measurements and RTOG criterion.

INTRODUCTION: Acute radiodermatitis (ARD) is a frequent and debilitating inflammatory toxicity in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy (RT). In severe cases, ARD may progress to moist desquamation, with the potential for ulceration. Colonization or infection with Staphylococcus aureus is a critical independent risk factor for worsening ARD. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapeutic approach, with potential to reduce microbial burden, modulate inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects

Radiation skin injury (RSI) is an unavoidable side effect of radiotherapy that delays the treatment process and affects patients' quality of life. However, RSI is easily overlooked in clinical practice with unified assessment methods. Although over 20 types of clinical scales have already been reported, they were never collated and systematically reorganized. In this review, we collected and categorized the RSI scales from the perspective of RSI-rated symptoms, patient self-feeling, the impact on quality of life, and psychological conditions, and summarize the common assessment modalities (bot

Radiation-induced skin injury (RISI) represents the most common complication of cancer radiotherapy, severely impairing patient health and treatment adherence. Conventional therapies show limited benefits due to the complex pathological mechanisms of RISI, creating an urgent demand for more effective approaches. Emerging biomaterials and regenerative therapies offer new opportunities for intervention. This review first outlines the key mechanisms of RISI and then highlights the mechanism-driven biomaterial design, with particular focus on the rational selection of active ingredients and advanc

Radiation-induced skin injury is a common sequela after chemoradiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma. We provide a case report of treating a moist desquamating wound in the neck with PermeaDerm, consisting of a silicone/nylon bilayer with a bio-coating of gelatin and aloe vera to optimize wound adherence. An 86-year-old man with stage 3 oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma was treated with 35 radiation fractions with a total dose of 70 Gray (Gy) to the left tonsil and involved neck nodes and weekly carboplatin. PermeaDerm was applied to the desquamating left neck after the last radiation tre
