Nanotechnology for the Treatment of Radiation Dermatitis: Advances and Translational Perspectives.

Radiation dermatitis is the most common complication of radiotherapy, but conventional treatments only alleviate some symptoms, with limited efficacy and safety, thus necessitating the exploration of novel therapeutic strategies. This review synthesizes current understanding of radiation dermatitis pathogenesis, and highlights recent advances enabled by nanomaterial-based strategies. We categorize nanomaterials according to their mechanisms of action and pathological stage-specific application in radiation dermatitis. Fullerene alcohol, a representative direct antioxidant material-has demonstr

Light-emitting diode therapy for the prevention and treatment of radiodermatitis in women with breast cancer: systematic review.

Breast cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, is treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Radiotherapy reduces recurrence and mortality but causes radiodermatitis in over 90% of patients. Current preventive and topical treatments have limited efficacy. Photobiomodulation therapy shows promise for preventing and treating radiodermatitis, but the evidence is limited and controversial. This article aims to systematically review the efficacy of LED therapy in preventing and treating radiodermatitis in women with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy. This systematic review adheres

High-Dose Oral Vitamin D for Toxic Effects of the Skin Associated With Chemotherapy and Radiation.

IMPORTANCE: Severe cutaneous toxic effects from chemotherapy and radiation often require treatment interruptions. High-dose oral vitamin D (hdVD) has shown potential as a rapid immunomodulator in experimental models and small human studies, but robust clinical data in oncology populations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical response, safety profile, and time to improvement for hdVD in patients with toxic erythema of chemotherapy (TEC) and acute radiation dermatitis (ARD). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective multicenter case series included 33 patients treate

Clinical efficacy of Mepilex Lite dressings combined with indomethacin suppositories in the treatment of acute radiation dermatitis caused by rectal cancer radiotherapy: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Acute radiation dermatitis is a common adverse reaction in radiotherapy, especially in patients with rectal cancer undergoing radiotherapy. At present, acute radiation dermatitis of the perianal skin has received widespread attention; however, acute radiation skin injury of the anal canal skin has not received sufficient attention. These patients mainly complain of anal pain, which seriously affects their quality of life. Mepilex Lite dressings have been recommended for the treatment of acute radiation dermatitis and have a definite effect. However, there is limited research on t

Clinicopathological and biobehavioral factors influence the onset and severity of oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer.

Oral mucositis is a debilitating adverse effect of radiotherapy in head and neck cancer. It progresses from erythema to painful ulcerations, often causing infections, nutritional impairment, treatment interruption, and reduced survival. While treatment-related factors are well established, patient-related risk determinants remain insufficiently defined. Thus, this study investigated the association between the onset and peak severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer and their clinicopathological, biobehavioral, and demographic characteristics. To carry

Bullous pemphigoid following adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune cutaneous blistering disease that predominantly affects elderly patients. Radiotherapy represents a rare triggering factor and may clinically mimic radiation-induced dermatitis, potentially leading to delayed diagnosis. CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old woman underwent breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy for multifocal invasive lobular carcinoma of the right breast. The immediate post-radiotherapy course was unremarkable. Approximately 7 weeks after completion of radiotherapy, the patient developed acute-onset pruritic blistering

A Kangfuxin-Loaded Lipid Gel for the Management of Radiation Dermatitis: Repair and Protection.

Radiation therapy often causes oxidative stress and inflammation in normal tissues due to the generation of excessive radiation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). This can subsequently lead to radiation-induced skin injury (RISI), which manifests as tissue damage ranging from dermatitis to ulcers. One approach to addressing these challenges is to develop biocompatible functional materials that can facilitate repair and improve treatment tolerance by neutralizing ROS. In this study, a water-responsive lipid gel (LG) delivery system was constructed using Kangfuxin liquid (KFX, the ethanol ex

Electron-Mediated Transport in Space, Astrophysical, and Laboratory Plasmas.

Electron-mediated transport is fundamental to the thermal and dynamical evolution of plasmas across a vast range of physical environments, from the solar wind and solar atmosphere to astrophysical systems such as galaxy clusters and accretion flows, to laboratory and fusion plasmas. This article reviews the current state of understanding of electron transport, drawing together observations, simulations, and theory to contextualise key challenges and open questions. We characterise plasma environments using the Knudsen number and electron beta, and highlight that some systems fall in an interme

Unraveling the rarity: p16-positive and p53-positive locally advanced anal cancer in a person living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is rare in the general population but is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among people living with HIV (PLWH). Patient outcomes are influenced by human papillomavirus (HPV) status, immune function, and tumor biology. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 56-year-old man with long-standing HIV infection on stable antiretroviral therapy (ART), diagnosed with locally advanced ASCC (T4N1cM0). He received standard concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with mitomycin C and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Treatment was complicated b

Modern adjuvant radiotherapy for breast adenoid cystic carcinoma: Clinical outcomes across normofractionated and hypofractionated schedules.

INTRODUCTION: Breast adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare triple-negative breast cancer subtype with a favourable prognosis. While hypofractionated and ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy are increasingly used for breast cancer, no dedicated data exist for breast adenoid cystic carcinoma. This study reports contemporary oncological outcomes, radiotherapy parameters, and toxicity in a uniformly treated single-institution cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed files of all patients with non-metastatic breast adenoid cystic carcinoma treated with surgery and adjuvant radiation b

Is re-irradiation combined with chemotherapy an option for inoperable local recurrence of previously irradiated breast cancer? A collection of cases.

BACKGROUND: The rate of locoregional recurrence after primary therapy remains at 5-15%. Ipsilateral recurrences are most commonly located in the residual breast or chest wall, followed by isolated nodal axillary and supraclavicular recurrences at 1-3%. In pre-irradiated patients with inoperable recurrences, re-radio(chemo)therapy can achieve sufficient local tumor control. METHODS: All inoperable patients with histologically confirmed locoregional recurrence (LRR) who underwent salvage radio(chemo)therapy at the University Medical Center Freiburg were included in this analysis. A descriptive

Age-stratified clinical interpretation of AWGS2025 sarcopenia criteria in head and neck cancer treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy: Comparison with AWGS2019.

OBJECTIVE: The AWGS2025 update extends sarcopenia diagnosis to adults aged 50-64 years, requires concurrent low muscle mass and low muscle strength, and introduces BMI-stratified muscle mass thresholds. We aimed to examine how these changes alter case identification in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 97 consecutive patients with HNC who underwent pretreatment assessment before definitive CRT. AWGS2025 was applied to patients aged ≥ 50 years, and AWGS2019 and AWGS2025 were cross-classified in those age

Exploring the feasibility of preoperative tumor-bed boost, oncoplastic surgery, and adjuvant radiotherapy schedule in early-stage breast cancer: a phase II clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS) improves satisfaction in patients who would fare otherwise sub-optimal cosmetic outcomes while bringing challenges in tumor-bed identification during adjuvant radiotherapy. The ultra-hypofractionated breast radiotherapy further shortens treatment sessions from moderately hypofractionated regimens. To circumscribe the difficulty in tumor-bed contouring and the additional toxicity from larger boost volumes, the authors, propose to move forward with the boost session preoperatively from the adjuvant radiation part. Thus, the present study a

Effects of axillary dose restriction on plan quality and acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer radiotherapy.

Axillary dose restriction (ADR) is rarely implemented in breast cancer radiotherapy by radiation oncologists to minimize exposure to organs at risk (OARs), particularly the axilla. This prospective randomized controlled study aims to evaluate the efficacy of ADR in improving plan quality (PQ) and its impact on acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) in breast cancer radiotherapy. The study recruited breast cancer patients who required postoperative radiotherapy but did not have an indication for axillary irradiation. Delineation and dosimetric assessment of the axilla (Axilla Levels I-III and Axillar
