[Temporary localized alopecia following neuroradiological procedures: 18 cases].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of cerebral lesions using endovascular radiological procedures is becoming a standard of care. Radiation-induced alopecia, a type of acute radiodermatitis, is a frequent complication. Between 2009 and 2010, a number of patients reported hair loss after embolization of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation at the Neuroradiology Department of the Strasbourg University Hospital. We therefore retrospectively investigated 18 cases to better delineate the circumstances and the risk factors associated with radiation-induced alopecia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the re

[Chronic radiodermatitis following coronaroplasty].

We report the case of a 72-year-old patient sent by his dermatologist in January 2009 for a back burn. His medical history reported one coronarography and two coronaroplasties between September and October 2005. This enabled us to form the diagnosis of chronic radiodermatitis after coronaroplasty from literature data. The occurrence of chronic radiodermatitis of the back and axilla area after cardiac catheterization has been observed in many countries. It almost always occurred in patients who underwent difficult and long-acting procedures leading to high doses radiation. There is not always a

Treatment of acute radiodermatitis with an oil-in-water emulsion following radiation therapy for breast cancer: a controlled, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: A side effect of radiotherapy for breast cancer is acute radiodermatitis. It is a common practice to keep irradiated skin dry on account of data from the 1950s that suggested this regimen limits dermatitis. However, severe dryness of the skin induced by irradiation results in itching and discomfort. Dry skin is characterized by scaliness, epidermal barrier dysfunction, and reduced stratum corneum hydration, and these signs and symptoms are reduced by treatment with an emulsion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a randomized, controlled, open-label study with 66 patients (ITT popu

Human fat grafting alleviates radiation skin damage in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous fat grafting has been observed to alleviate the sequelae of chronic radiodermatitis. To date, no study has replicated this finding in an animal model. METHODS: The dorsa of adult wild-type FVB mice were shaved and depilated. The dorsal skin was then distracted away from the body and irradiated (45 Gy). Four weeks after irradiation, 1.5-cc fat or sham grafts were placed in the dorsal subcutaneous space. Gross results were analyzed photometrically. The animals were euthanized at 4 and 8 weeks after fat or sham grafting and their dorsal skin was processed for histologic an

Acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer: topical therapy with vitamin E acetate in lipophilic gel base.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy can cause adverse skin reactions over the course of their treatment. Currently, management is based on several tropical products although there is no gold-standard approach to prevention and management of radiation toxicity. METHOD: We report our experience of vitamin E acetate in the treatment of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients who experienced grade 4 side effects (according to Radiation Therapy Oncology Group criteria). RESULTS: Clinical management consisted of oral antibiotics and local application of vitamin E acetate and local escarectomy. All of

Prophylaxis with a cream containing urea reduces the incidence and severity of radio-induced dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Radio-induced dermatitis is one of the most frequent side effects of radiotherapy. Among the commercially available products for the care of irradiated skin is a hydrating lotion containing 3% urea, polidocanol and hyaluronic acid. Its effectiveness for preventing the appearance of radiodermatitis or reducing its severity has been studied on a number of occasions. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of "intensive use" of the lotion containing 3% urea, polidocanol and hyaluronic acid for preventing the appearance of acute radiodermatitis and controlling its severity. Radiodermatitis prevention with sucralfate in breast cancer: fundamental and clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Acute radiodermatitis induced by radiotherapy may affect the quality of life and in some cases requires withholding treatment. The present study concerns the protective effect of a 1% sucralfate lotion. We propose joint fundamental and clinical points of view. METHODS: The free radical scavenging capacity of sucralfate was measured with electron spin resonance and was supported by theoretical calculations. The clinical effects of sucralfate lotion were evaluated on 21 women treated for breast cancer. Breast skin response was evaluated at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 Gy, according to

Target cells in radiation pneumopathy.

Radiation pneumopathy is the reaction of the organ lung to radiation effects in various target cells. It starts as an exudative inflammation, with the clinical picture of interstitial pneumonia 6-12 weeks after irradiation, and proceeds to a productive chronic inflammation lasting several months and terminating, as other chronic inflammations do, in scar formation, called lung fibrosis. Lung fibrosis is the common end point after lung damage from a wide range of damaging agents. The pathogenetic process leading to the signs and symptoms of radiation pneumopathy is an integrated response of the

Severe radiation dermatitis is related to Staphylococcus aureus.

Acute radiation dermatitis commonly occurs following local radiation therapy for various cancers and, when severe, may necessitate disruption of treatment. Intense inflammatory reaction may result in a breakdown of the skin's barrier function and accompanying bacterial colonization. Bacterial superantigens may exacerbate inflammation through activation of T-cells and subsequent cytokine release. We report six cases of severe radiation dermatitis in cancer patients. Four of the six grew pathogenic bacteria, and three had psoriasiform or eczematous reactions at distant sites. Both the radiation

Efficacy of homeopathic treatment of skin reactions during radiotherapy for breast cancer: a randomised, double-blind clinical trial.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Belladonna 7cH and X-ray 15cH associated in the treatment of acute radiodermatitis. A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 66 patients who had been operated on for breast cancer and were undergoing radiotherapy was conducted. The following parameters were assessed over ten weeks: breast skin colour, warmth, swelling and pigmentation. The efficacy of the treatment was assessed by the comparison of these parameters taken individually and by calculating an Index of Total Severity (sum of the scores of the four param

Acute radiodermatitis from accidental overexposure to X-rays.

Approximately 2 weeks after accidental overexposure to X-ray radiation, a worker developed acute radiodermatitis on fingers of both hands. Exposure simulation indicated that total ionizing radiation absorbed by his fingers amounted to about 20 Gy. After 2 years, acute radiodermatitis evolved to chronicity of lesions with presence of atrophic skin, teleangiectasia, alopecia, and dyskeratosis on three right-hand fingers. Cytogenetic dosimetry of peripheral blood lymphocytes, performed 2 months after acute radiation, showed an increase of micronuclei (7% vs. 1 +/- 0.4% according to laboratory ref

Management of acute radiodermatitis. Pharmacological or nonpharmacological remedies?

The medical and nursing literature suggests a wide variety of pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches to treatment of acute radiation skin damages (erythema, dry and moist desquamation, ulceration), but no specific and standardized therapy. The incidence of radiodermatitis has decreased with mega-voltage instruments, but it can nevertheless influence the therapeutic program and impair quality of life of patients. A study has been conducted to evaluate the tolerability and effectiveness of a nonpharmacological remedy, a mixture of hydrophobic (stearic acid) and hydrophilic (propylene

Acute radiodermatitis from occupational exposure to iridium 192.

Industrial radiography using the man-made radioisotope iridium 129 is commonplace in the southern states. Despite established procedures and safeguards, accidental exposure may result in typical acute radiodermatitis. We have presented a clinical example of this phenomenon.

A long-term effect of prior irradiation on the thermal enhancement of radiation damage in the mouse ear.

The responses of the mouse ear to heat alone, X-rays alone or X-rays combined with heat were measured at 10 months after initial X-ray treatments (19 Gy or 10 X 3.8 Gy), which caused similar acute reactions. Fractionating the initial dose had little effect on the response to retreatment. Prior irradiation increased thermal sensitivity so that the heating time at 43.5 degrees C required to cause necrosis was about 65 per cent that in age-matched controls. Prior irradiation also increased the response to X-rays alone, but had different effects on the susceptibilities to develop acute radiodermat

[Radiodermatitis].

All radiations that cross the skin to reach the target organ may produce dermatitis. The skin reaction essentially depends on the total dose delivered, but the fractioning of that dose and its distribution over time are important factors. As benign lesions are no longer irradiated and as accidental or occupational exposure to radiations has become exceptional, the main cause of these lesions is irradiation of malignant tumours, increasingly combined with supportive treatments. Owing to technical improvements radiodermatitis is now less frequent than formerly. Acute radiodermatitis clinically r
